Chapter 119: Fox

With a casual wave of his hand, Renjiro made the pile of gold coins vanish, storing them safely away in his dimensional space ring while also registering the amount in his system inventory.

He looked at Elaria curiously. "You should normally be meditating under the shade of the Eternal Tree during this time of day. Why did you come all the way out here to find me?"

He knew Elaria was diligent about her magical practices. Compared to her, he felt quite lazy sometimes.

Apart from meditating himself when the moon was at its brightest during the night, he didn’t really bother much with quiet contemplation during other times.

To him, the small boost in magic power gained from a whole night of sitting still just didn’t feel as significant or immediately useful as the magic he regained instantly just by summoning even a hundred new elf soldiers.

Elaria’s expression was calm as she answered, "Your Majesty, two Orcs have come down from the mountain slopes. They are asking to see you."

"Orcs?" Renjiro frowned slightly, surprised. Orcs rarely ventured this close to known elf territory unless they were scouting for a raid. "What kind? Kobolds hoping to trade some junk?"

Elaria shook her head gently. "No, Your Majesty. These are Fox-kin the ones known among the Orc races for being the most cunning and clever. While they aren’t particularly strong in a fight themselves," she explained, "they are very smart about survival.

They know how to attach themselves to the Orcs’ royal family, the powerful Golden Lion-kin.

Compared to the poor, often bullied Kobolds, the Fox-kin generally live much better lives within the Orc territories."

Renjiro’s frown deepened slightly. Fox-kin... traders, maybe? "Did they say why they want to see me?" he asked.

Elaria covered her mouth lightly with her hand, a slight, knowing smile playing on her lips. Her eyes twinkled. "They are crafty Fox-kin, Your Majesty. They said... they wish to talk about business

!"

Renjiro almost snorted. "Business?" he said dismissively. "I don’t have anything I particularly want to sell them right now. And I certainly don’t have heaps of spare gold lying around to buy whatever cheap trinkets or questionable goods they’re likely peddling." He gestured vaguely towards where the gold had been.

Elaria tilted her head slightly. "So, Your Majesty means... you won’t see them?" she asked, clarifying his intent.

Renjiro paused for a moment, tapping a finger against his chin thoughtfully. Seeing them couldn’t hurt, probably. And Fox-kin were known for information gathering too... "Well... meeting them won’t cost anything," he finally decided.

"Let’s at least see what kind of ’business’ they have in mind. Who knows," he added with a wry half-smile, "if it turns out they’re basically offering to deliver gold right to my doorstep with some incredibly good deal, then maybe... maybe it’s worth talking about."

"Understood, Your Majesty," Elaria replied smoothly. She knew perfectly well how important gold was for Renjiro’s ambitions to rebuild the elf kingdom. "I shall bring them here then."

With a graceful nod, she turned and left the courtyard.

About ten minutes passed in quiet contemplation for Renjiro. Then, Elaria returned, walking back into the clearing. Following closely behind her were the two Fox-kin she had mentioned.

Seeing the two figures clearly now, Renjiro felt a genuine jolt of surprise. They looked... strangely familiar? Not like specific people he knew personally, but like a familiar type or combination he’d encountered before.

One was an old male Fox-kin, his fur greying around the muzzle, his movements careful and deliberate.

The other was a young female, maybe his apprentice or granddaughter, with bright, intelligent eyes.

The whole setup the old mentor and the young student immediately reminded Renjiro vaguely of the Undead Magician Varn and his young female apprentice, Nina, whom he’d dealt with previously.

What was even more surprising was their clothing. They weren’t wearing the rough hides or tribal gear typical of most Orcs.

Instead, they were dressed in outfits clearly made in the human world expensive-looking noble attire, cut from fine fabrics, looking very fancy and luxurious.

As for their appearance, aside from the pointed ears peeking through their hair, they could almost pass for humans at first glance. Almost. The only definite giveaway that marked them as Fox-kin was that behind each of them, swaying gently, was a furry tail.

The old Fox-man’s tail was a respectable, solid grey color. The young Fox-girl’s tail, however, was a beautiful, eye-catching silver-grey, with distinct streaks of shining golden hairs woven through it, glinting in the light.

Meeting Renjiro’s direct, assessing gaze, both the old Fox-man and the young Fox-woman seemed visibly nervous. Their fancy clothes couldn’t hide the tension in their shoulders, and their tails gave tiny, involuntary twitches.

And they had good reason to be nervous. They weren’t standing before some easily bribed or intimidated human noble.

This was the King of the High Elves, a being whose ancient and pure bloodline ranked incredibly high on the Continent arguably even higher in terms of raw prestige and magical potential than the Orcs’ own powerful Beast King.

The old man and the young girl quickly bowed deeply before Renjiro, showing great respect and deference.

"Your Majesty, great Elf King!" the old Fox-man said first, his voice polite, though Renjiro could detect a slight tremor in it. "The wandering Fox-kin, Hossini, greets you!"

Then the young girl added softly, her head also bowed low, "And Melya greets Your Majesty!"

Renjiro’s calm expression flickered for just a second. A hint of surprise, maybe even annoyance, crossed his face.

He looked down at the old Foxman kneeling respectfully before him. "Say that name again? What did you say you were called?"

The old Foxman kept his head bowed low, his voice raspy but clear. "Your Majesty, great Elf King. I am an elder of the Fox Tribe. My name is Hossini."

Hossini... Renjiro took a slow, quiet breath. For a moment, he actually considered just kicking this old fox elder, and the tribe he likely represented, right out of his territory immediately. The name alone brought back certain... complicated memories or associations.

Pushing that thought aside for now, Renjiro shifted his gaze slightly to the young Fox girl kneeling beside the elder. Mirya, he thought her name might be, or maybe Melya.

At first glance, the girl was undeniably pretty.

Strikingly so. In terms of pure facial features, she wasn’t any less beautiful than one of the naturally gorgeous elves.

Adding to her unique look was a fluffy, silver-grey fox tail swishing nervously behind her, giving her an extra touch of charm, even now when she looked scared.

Renjiro’s voice was even, betraying none of his earlier thoughts. "Some time ago," he stated casually, "my elves cleared out a tribe of Kobolds that lived on this very mountain. Their appearance... well, it was quite different from you Fox people."

Hearing this seemingly offhand remark...

The fox girl, Melya’s, face instantly went pale. Her small body started to tremble visibly, shivering with fear. Her big, watery eyes looked up for a second, making her seem incredibly pitiful and helpless.

Hossini, the old Foxman, also stiffened, his face changing instantly. He understood the underlying message immediately.

"Your Majesty, Elf King!" Hossini said quickly, his voice tight with urgency. "I... I believe the great Beast God watches over us humble Fox people! We keep to ourselves, Your Majesty! We have nothing but the deepest respect for your power and your domain! The Fox people would never act like those foolish Kobolds! We would never dare to offend you, noble King, or your mighty people!"

Hossini was sharp, Renjiro gave him that. He wasn’t just old; he was clever.

He instantly understood the real point Renjiro was making. It wasn’t just about the difference in looks between Foxmen and Kobolds.

The King was reminding him: The Kobold tribe that used to live right here on this mountain was completely wiped out by my elves.

The unspoken threat hung heavy in the air. His Majesty, the Elf King standing before him, was clearly telling him: If your purpose here isn’t simple, if you cause trouble, then your Fox tribe hiding somewhere nearby will end up exactly like that Kobold tribe.

They would face the terrifying might of the elf army.

Beast God protect us! Hossini thought, fear making his own tail twitch uncontrollably under his robes.

His mind flashed back to everything he’d seen on their careful journey to this meeting place. Endless ranks of sharp-eyed elves patrolling the woods.

A terrifying troop of Giant Golems, each one easily over twenty meters tall, standing silent guard like stone mountains.

And stranger still, many winged young girls Fairies?

Pixies? riding casually on the backs of monstrous creatures easily ten meters long, alongside those fierce War Bears he’d glimpsed earlier.

Seeing all that power... Hossini seriously started to wonder if all the old legends about elves being gentle, reclusive forest dwellers were just completely wrong, or maybe wildly outdated.
