Chapter 114: Too Big To Walk
Chapter 114: Too Big To Walk
And deep within the woods, nature spirits like these Grove Spirits weren’t just safe; they were stronger. Nature itself gave them shelter and power. It was why no nature spirit ever liked seeing the forest hurt. They were part of it, and it was part of them.
Hearing Elaria’s agreement, one of the Grove Spirits who had been complaining suddenly beamed, her anger momentarily forgotten.
She sighed dramatically, clasping her hands together. "Oh, Elder Elaria! Your beauty is just like this forest a true, shining treasure given to us by nature itself! So stunning, so wonderful, you simply can’t look away!"
"Oh, my! Well, thank you!" Elaria couldn’t help but giggle, covering her mouth lightly with her hand, a faint blush rising on her cheeks.
This little exchange only seemed to make the Giant Golems feel worse. They shuffled their massive feet awkwardly, and a few let out low, rumbling sighs that sounded like rocks grinding together.
Renjiro decided it was definitely time to hear the other side. He turned his attention fully to the big stone figures.
"Alright," he said, his voice calm and steady. "Tell me, what troubles you?"
"It’s... it’s like this, Your Majesty..." one of the lead Giant Golems finally managed to speak. Its voice was a deep, slow rumble, like stones shifting underground, and it was filled with genuine distress.
"My people and I... we truly don’t want to ruin this beautiful forest. We honestly don’t! But... well, you can see us, Your Majesty. We’re just... so big." He gestured helplessly with a hand the size of a small boulder.
"When we walk," the Golem continued, its voice full of frustration, "we just can’t help stepping on some of the smaller trees and flowers. We try to be careful, truly we do! But our feet cover so much ground! And then... then these little Tree Sprites," he glanced nervously at the fuming spirits.
"They keep making more plants grow. Everywhere. They wave their hands, release that life energy stuff, and suddenly there’s a thick bush or a tangle of roots right where we need to put our foot next! It’s happening constantly! Now... now we’re practically trapped in this part of the forest, Your Majesty. We can barely move without breaking something or getting tangled!"
At this, the beautiful Grove Spirits stuck out their tongues, not looking sorry at all.
They did make lots of plants grow, yes, but they were forest spirits! Growing things was what they did! It was their talent, their joy, their everyday work. How could anyone possibly blame them for being good at their job? It didn’t make sense to them.
Elaria looked from the genuinely troubled Golems to the upset Spirits, then turned her gaze towards Renjiro.
Hearing the Golem’s side of things, she felt a pang of sympathy. Maybe simply blaming these enormous creatures wasn’t the right approach. They had a real problem too.
Renjiro listened to both sides, then smiled, a knowing look in his eyes. "Alright, settle down everyone. This whole situation is actually quite simple to handle," he said, his voice carrying a reassuring calm.
He looked at the Grove Spirits first. "The Grove Spirits are the cherished daughters of the forest! Protecting these woods, nurturing the trees, helping life flourish that is your sacred duty, and it is your right. No one can, or should, take that away from you."
"Hooray! Long live Your Majesty!"
The lovely Grove Spirits instantly forgot their anger and cheered with delight. Their previous tears were replaced with bright smiles.
Happy again, they raised their magic staves high and, almost as one, released waves of pulsing green light.
The energy washed over the nearby ground, and like magic well, exactly like magic the plants responded instantly.
Flowers burst into bloom, vines snaked rapidly up tree trunks, and small bushes thickened into dense thickets in seconds. It looked like time-lapse footage of nature on fast-forward.
Renjiro quickly held up a hand, his voice firm but not unkind. "Whoa there! Hold on! Stop that, please!"
If they kept growing things with such enthusiasm, forget the twenty-meter tall Giant Golems being able to move soon, even the most nimble elf wouldn’t be able to push through the sudden jungle!
"Your Majesty?"
The Spirits of the Groves lowered their staves, looking at Renjiro with wide, puzzled eyes, tilting their heads like confused birds. Why would he stop them from doing their wonderful work?
Renjiro explained patiently, gesturing between the two groups. "Listen. The Grove Spirits and the Giant Golems are both important members of our growing elf family. We need to understand each other and live together peacefully. The Golems, as they said, are simply too large. A forest as thick and wild as you make it will block them completely, making it impossible for them to move or do their duties."
Hearing the King acknowledge their difficulty so clearly, the Giant Golems looked incredibly moved. A few let out low rumbles that might have been stony sobs of relief. You could almost see the gratitude on their rocky faces.
Their King finally understood! He was speaking up for them!
Renjiro then turned back to the pretty, and now slightly pouting, Grove Spirits. "No one is taking away your right to be guardians of this forest," he assured them gently.
"But part of being a good guardian is making sure your actions don’t cause unnecessary trouble for your friends and allies."
The Spirits of the Groves slowly, reluctantly, lowered their magic staves completely. Their little mouths formed small, unhappy pouts. They didn’t like being told not to grow things.
Seeing their expressions, Renjiro chuckled softly, a twinkle in his eye. "But I have faith in you. I’m quite sure that clever and lovely forest spirits like yourselves have the amazing ability to not just grow trees, but perhaps... to move them as well?"
"Move trees? Yes, Your Majesty! Of course, we can!" The Spirits of the Groves nodded eagerly, their interest caught. That sounded like a fun challenge.
