Chapter 75: Chapter 75: He No Longer Understands
When Xie Jinghao opened her eyes, an hour and a half had passed. She blinked and looked at Lu Jiasheng, who was lying next to her bed. She moved her fingers slightly.
"Jiasheng!"
"Jinghao, you’re awake—you finally woke up. You scared me to death just now. Thankfully nothing happened to you. Wife, we will never have another child again, never, nothing is more important than you, wife."
Lu Jiasheng, with red-rimmed eyes, held Xie Jinghao’s hand, his voice choked with emotion. When he sent Xie Jinghao into the delivery room, he could barely stand, his mind involuntarily filled with lots of terrible thoughts. If Xie Jinghao were gone, he would not be able to properly raise the children by himself. It would be too pitiful for the children to lose their mother. Would he have to find another wife in the future?
What if the new wife abused his children?
No, absolutely none of those terrible things could happen. His thoughts wandered to other places, getting messier the more he thought about them, getting more and more upset, feeling more and more that he couldn’t live without Xie Jinghao. From now on, he must treat her well. If anyone dares to say a single word against his wife, he swears he would fight them at the risk of his own life.
When Shen Meng came back carrying the thermos, she saw the couple looking tearfully at each other, and was somewhat touched for a moment.
It was only when Xie Jinghao heard some noises that she turned her head.
"Elder sister-in-law is here."
"This isn’t a good time. The doctor said you can’t drink nourishing soup right now since you’ve just given birth. I cooked some millet porridge for you. Have a little to start, and after the doctor has seen you, I’ll cook something delicious for you," Shen Meng said.
Xie Jinghao blushed a bit from what she said, "Thank you, elder sister-in-law."
Pouring the warm millet porridge into a bowl, she took a metal spoon and fed her bit by bit.
"Don’t worry, Xiao Gang is outside following Uncle Guai; Ni is asleep, and the nurse took her to get vaccinated; she will be brought back soon. The little one is well-nourished, chubby and fair, with a little nose just like yours. Here, eat slowly—the porridge has been simmered into a thick consistency. This is the best for you to eat right now, as the doctor said."
"Aunt, thank you, you’re so good to me."
Shen Meng didn’t know if it was because Xie Jinghao had just delivered a child, but every time she spoke to her, she wanted to cry. Ever since she was a child, besides her grandmother, who else would care about her, concern themselves with her, and treat her like a person?
Lu Jiasheng’s brows were tightly furrowed; he felt that both his wife and elder sister-in-law had changed a lot since coming back this time. His wife was never this fragile and delicate before – she used to be very capable, nothing like her present state, completely like a young girl.
And the elder sister-in-law, in the past, wouldn’t even bother to feed his wife millet porridge, let alone glance at her without feeling it was a nuisance.
He didn’t understand, really!
Just after finishing feeding the millet porridge, Dr. Cheng came over with two young nurses. She examined Xie Jinghao’s wound and drew the curtain around the bed.
"Are you feeling ok?"
"Dr. Cheng, you’ve worked hard. I feel much better now."
Xie Jinghao looked at the gentle and considerate Dr. Cheng; she had saved her and her daughter’s lives. She was so gentle even when talking, truly a good doctor who not only cared about her wound but also her feelings.
"Having a cesarean is indeed harder after childbirth. You were well-nourished before, I thought you could give birth naturally. But nevertheless, it turned out to be a good thing. Mr. Xie, now hold onto the two rails on the sides, I’ll help you to expel the lochia."
"Ok."
The young nurses asked Lu Jiasheng and Shen Meng to step outside the curtain, and without them, they could only hear the suppressed and deep groans of Xie Jinghao biting her teeth in pain. Lu Jiasheng was anxious and almost lifted the curtain to go in.
"Hey, don’t go in there, Dr. Cheng is inside, your wife is fine, luckily Dr. Cheng brought us here, otherwise not a single person could have stopped you."
The words of the young nurse made Shen Meng feel a bit embarrassed.
"Don’t be hasty, Jiasheng, Dr. Cheng is examining Jinghao’s wound, don’t add to the chaos."
"I know, I know, I just wanted to take a look, she is crying."
Shen Meng: "...."
I know you’re anxious, but try not to be so hasty!!!
"Don’t add to the chaos." Her tone became a bit stern, too. You care for your wife, but you need to choose the right moment. Jinghao is fine now; if you keep being like this, you’ll seem unreliable. How can Jinghao and the child rely on you in the future?
Dr. Cheng Yu Fen glanced at Shen Meng before she left. She really is a warm-hearted person. One can tell she’s straightforward by how she takes care of her sisters-in-law.
"Mr. Shen, your sister-in-law had a cesarean section and needs to stay in the hospital for two more days. As for family care, it’s better to take turns; otherwise, it’s too exhausting. I have a folding bed in my office, you can rest there if you don’t mind."
"I don’t mind, I don’t mind at all, thank you so much Dr. Cheng, I shouldn’t have spoken to you that way last time." Shen Meng said with insincerity. Dr. Cheng Yu Fen is a good doctor, and she was truly grateful, but she didn’t regret a single word she had said to her. It knocked some sense into them, otherwise, the family would have fallen apart.
Dr. Cheng Yu Fen thought about what Shen Meng had said to her last time, and her face turned awkward.
"No, Mr. Shen, you were right. I really have neglected my family too much. These days my family hasn’t visited much, and we’ve been much more harmonious at home. I’ve realized how wrong I was, and I won’t make these mistakes in the future. You all take care of the patient, I’ll be going now."
"Ah, thank you, Dr. Cheng, you’re busy."
Xie Jinghao watched Dr. Cheng’s retreating figure with tearful eyes, she wanted to take back her earlier praise for Dr. Cheng. She hadn’t expected that the gentle and kind Dr. Cheng would press on her wound so forcefully just now; for a moment, she thought she was going to die.
"Jinghao, how are you feeling?"
"It hurts!"
A cesarean section really hurts. Just now, Dr. Cheng told her to rest well, eat more, and walk around tomorrow. When she’s able to pass gas, she should let them know. She’s in so much pain, shouldn’t she be lying down in her sickbed?
Why do they still want her to walk around? Why???
"Listen to the doctor, Dr. Cheng is doing this for your good. Jiasheng, you rest up a bit, I’ll go check on Xiao Gang. Uncle Guai has been helping for so long, it’s time to let him go home. I’ll go ask when we can be discharged, then we can ask Uncle Guai to make the trip to pick us up."
"Ah, thank you elder sister-in-law for your hard work."
Shen Meng left the hospital ward and told Uncle Guai the doctor’s orders, asking him to come pick up the patient in three days’ time. She also asked him to help look after the house. Xifeng was still taking care of the child by herself, if Shen Meng were to care for her at her own home, Chen Zhaodi would surely scold her, so there was no choice but to leave it to Uncle Guai and Aunt Juying.
"Zhenping’s wife, don’t worry, when I get back, I’ll let your aunt visit your place. Mingyang’s kids are both well-behaved and sensible, they are easy to look after."
"That’s good, let Aunt make herself at home with the food and grains in the kitchen, and let her eat at my place too, it’ll be convenient. Oh, and make sure my in-laws don’t enter my home, otherwise, if they see something they like, they’ll definitely take it. The house is all on Uncle Guai now."
Having dealt with her for so long, they knew well what kind of person Shen Meng was. Her family had already benefitted from her goodness, and to fail to look after the house properly would make Shen Meng distressed.
"Don’t worry, your aunt can be quite the fighter during arguments, she won’t let Mingyang’s kids be at a disadvantage."
