Chapter 63: The Gate of Destiny: Jane’s Choice

Chapter 63: Chapter 63: The Gate of Destiny: Jane’s Choice

A faint light filtered in through the partially open window, casting soft, golden hues across the room.

Jane stirred gently from her sleep, her violet eyes fluttering open like delicate petals after a storm. Her body still felt weak, but the warmth wrapped around her heart told her she was safe.

Then she saw him.

Kaal, sitting at her bedside, his white hair slightly messy, his eyes tired but gentle. He was watching her like she was the most precious thing in the world.

"You’re awake," he said, voice low and soothing.

Before she could respond, Kaal leaned in and gently pressed his lips to her forehead, a lingering, tender kiss that made her heart ache with a warmth she didn’t know she needed.

Her lips trembled. "Young Master..."

"Shh," he said softly, "You need to eat first. You’ve been sleeping for two days."

He helped her sit up, adjusting the pillows behind her with care, before lifting a bowl of warm herbal soup and carefully raising a spoon. He spooned it to her lips, and Jane drank slowly, her gaze never leaving his.

The bitterness of the herbs didn’t matter. Nothing did he do when he was here.

After a few more sips, Kaal set the bowl aside and said quietly, "Jane... I want to hear what happened in your trial."

Jane paused, her fingers curling slightly around the blanket.

"I chose the Gate of Destiny," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "And it showed me countless possible futures of myself."

Kaal remained still, listening.

She took a shaky breath. "The first future... was the one where you never saved me."

Kaal’s gaze darkened.

"In that life," she continued, "I was sold to a cultivator at the Opening Realm. He used me. Treated me worse than an animal. I lived through things worse than death. Until one night... he got drunk. And I poisoned him."

Her voice cracked, but she pressed on.

"I took whatever cultivation resources he left behind and tried to cultivate. But... I only had red-grade talent. No matter how hard I tried, I never broke through to Warrior Rank 3. I lived my entire life in the shadows. Weak. Forgotten. I died old, alone."

She looked away, her hands trembling slightly.

"The second future was... a little better. I escaped the slave auction on my own. I was rescued by a female cultivator, and she took me in as her disciple. I thought... maybe this time I would live."

"But she made an enemy of the Jeral Clan."

Her voice fell lower.

"We both died in the end."

There’s another future. Her voice trembled, just slightly.

"At first, it showed me a life where I never became a slave," she said, her gaze drifting somewhere far away. "I lived in the forests of Lunaria, under the starlit skies of the High Elf kingdom. I had a name. A family. A place I belonged. I studied the Moon Arts. I danced beneath twin moons. I was... happy."

Kaal listened silently, not interrupting.

"But then the dream shattered," she whispered. "And the illusion showed me another path. One where I never met you. I survived... but I was cold. Powerful, yes, but empty. That version of me stood on a throne of corpses, wearing a crown of regret. No warmth. No light. Just victory paid in loneliness."

She drew in a slow, deep breath, her fingers curling into the bedsheets.

"The gate kept testing, showing me versions of myself. Lives shaped by comfort, by cruelty, by isolation, by ambition. But in none of them... did I find peace. Not until I chose something else."

She turned to Kaal now, her violet eyes locked with his, glowing faintly.

"I told the trial," she said firmly, "that I would not follow any thread it laid before me. That I would forge my own path no matter what the stars had written."

Jane took a breath, her voice lowering as her gaze drifted to her hand."Then, at the end... I heard it. That cold, emotionless voice echoing through my mind."

[Trial Complete. Reward: Luminara’s Tear.]

"A single crystalline teardrop appeared in my palm," she whispered, her tone reverent. "It glowed... not like sunlight or starlight but like the fading glow of a dying moon. Soft. Sad. Sacred."

Her fingers closed gently around the crystal.

"And the moment I touched it..."

She paused her body, remembering what words could barely capture.

"It shattered into light, and that light seeped into my veins. My blood began to boil, but not with pain. It was like something ancient and divine... finally waking up inside me."

Kaal listened intently, eyes fixed on her as she spoke.

"My body changed. I could feel it. My figure grew more graceful. My ears stretched, becoming long and pointed. My skin turned pale and luminous, and my red hair " She smiled faintly, brushing it behind one ear, " became smooth, almost silken. It shimmered like starlight."

She looked up at Kaal now, her eyes reflecting silver moonlight.

"After the transformation, I could feel it in the world. The wind, the forest, the spirits hidden in trees. The spiritual Qi around me no longer resisted... it welcomed me. Flowed toward me like old friends reunited."

She chuckled lightly.

"And then something stranger happened. I looked at Mia’s soul beast, Sylvrin, and I heard him."

Kaal raised a brow. "He spoke to you?"

"Not with words. Not exactly," she said softly. "But I understood. His emotions. His thoughts. I could feel what he wanted to say. It was like... our souls were aligned for a moment."

Her fingers lightly touched her heart.

"I think this is part of the Lunar High Elf bloodline. A connection to the moon, to beasts, and to spirit. Not dominance... but harmony."

She smiled, but there was a shimmer of awe in her expression.

"I used to wonder if I had anything of value inside me, anything meaningful in my life. And now... I know."

Kaal leaned closer, his voice warm.

"And I’m glad you chose your own destiny. Because no fate could ever have created the person you’ve become."

Kaal said, "So your violet eyes... and those long ears..."

"It’s change when I awaken my bloodline," Jane replied. "But even so, I’m still me. The girl you saved. The one who used to carry your sword and cook your meals."

Kaal sat quietly beside Jane’s bedside, the moonlight casting a silver glow across her Elven features. The words still lingered in his mind:

’ Reward: Luminara’s Tear. ’

He’d never heard of such a treasure before, not in any ancient text, not in the archives of the Kilvish Clan, not even in forbidden records. And yet, it had awakened Jane’s hidden bloodline, the Lunar High Elf, a lineage long thought extinct.

’This can’t be a coincidence,’ he thought. ’It’s the system. The Founder’s system... It’s granting rewards that fit the person’s deepest self. Jane needed that gem to awaken. And it gave it to her.’

He stood, brushing Jane’s hair gently before turning away. At the door, he paused.

"Mia," he called softly.

Mia stepped in from the hallway, her ears twitching attentively.

"Stay with Jane. Watch over her while she recovers. I’ll be gone for a little while."

Mia nodded. "Of course, Young Master."

-----( Three Days Later...)------

Kaal stood silently before the broken statue in the courtyard, the one that marked the Third Trial.

Jane stood to his left, calm but ready. Mia stood to his right, Sylvrin perched protectively at her side, tail swishing.

"Ashen and Divya entered this trial four months ago," Kaal said, narrowing his gaze. "It’s time we found out why they haven’t returned."

The moment the three of them stepped onto the circle of cracked marble beneath the statue’s shadow, the ground beneath them lit up with ancient runes.

A blinding column of light engulfed them.

And then—

Silence.

When Kaal opened his eyes, the world had changed.

He gasped not in pain, but confusion. His body felt... smaller. Weaker.

He looked down.

His hands were thin, calloused, and covered in dirt. His robes were torn, crude, and oversized. A rough leather belt was tied around his waist like a rope. His bare feet were blistered. He looked no older than ten.

"What the—"

Before he could finish the thought, a loud, cruel voice shouted.

"Why are you standing still!?"

And a whip lashed through the air, too fast to dodge.

CRACK!

Pain exploded across Kaal’s cheek as the whip struck him.

"Aghhh!" he cried out, collapsing to the ground, tasting blood.

He reached out instinctively for his Qi—but...

Nothing happened. The reservoir inside him was empty.

No Qi. No power. That is when Kaal realizes that

He became mortal.

Utterly, terrifyingly weak mortal.

The man with the whip stepped forward, a sneer twisting his scarred face. "Lazy brat. Get up before I flay you alive!"

He raised the whip again, but—

"Stop!" a young voice cried out.

A girl, no older than thirteen, ran forward and threw herself over Kaal’s fallen body, shielding him with her own.

"Sir, please!" she begged, her voice trembling. "He has a fever... he’s just sick. I’ll do his work for him. Please don’t hurt him again."

The man growled. "Get out of my sight!"

With a grunt, he turned and walked away.

The girl quickly helped Kaal to his feet and pulled him behind a ruined shed, far from the overseer’s gaze.

"Arthur, are you alright?" she asked urgently, placing a trembling hand on his forehead.

Kaal blinked.

Arthur?

He realized something else in that moment. They hadn’t just taken his Qi.

They’d taken... his identity. In this world, in this trial, he wasn’t Kaal.

His identity is the founder of the Kilvish clan. He was Kilvish Arthur.
