Chapter 985: Chapter 982: The Feeling of Home
Upon hearing this voice, Tang Ye’s eyes brightened, feeling the air around him become much fresher. Perhaps the appearance of this other person could break the awkwardness between him and Li Qingtian.
But who had arrived?
Soon, a knock on the door was followed by a woman’s voice outside.
"Marshal, your dinner is here."
After hearing this, Tang Ye glanced at Li Qingtian and then turned to look towards the door, which was opened at that moment. A woman in her thirties appeared, holding a dinner plate. The moment she saw Li Qingtian, she looked perplexed.
A strange woman was in the Marshal’s house.
With the dinner plate in hand, she didn’t know what to do next.
Tang Ye turned his gaze back to Li Qingtian and politely said, "You wait here for a moment."
Li Qingtian’s eyes flickered with emotion, and he nodded.
"Sure, go ahead."
"Mhm."
Tang Ye nodded, stood up from the sofa, and walked over to the woman at the door. He looked at the dinner plate in her hands. It only had food for one person, but there were two people in the room—hard to share. He glanced at Li Qingtian again, and Tang Ye couldn’t help but frown.
"Go and get another portion," said Tang Ye to the woman, but as soon as he had finished speaking, he noticed that Li Qingtian had already stood up from the sofa and walked over. She looked at the food on the dinner plate and her expression turned strange. It was unclear whether she was dissatisfied because the woman only brought one portion or thought such a meal was too lavish.
She pointed in the direction of the kitchen and asked Tang Ye, "Is there food in the kitchen?"
The light in the refrigerator was on, clearly indicating it contained food. Tang Ye hadn’t finished speaking because he had never looked inside, but to ensure he could cook something during non-meal times, there should be some food in the refrigerator.
Before he could speak, the woman replied, "This..." Her tone initially paused, but she quickly resumed normalcy and continued, "There is food in the refrigerator; it’s replaced daily."
"Alright, you take this back to feed someone else, I’ll handle it here."
"But... Marshal..." The woman seemed slow to respond. She reminded that both she and Marshal Tang Ye preferred strongly flavored food—the spicier or sweeter, the better. Taste that was even slightly mild seemed like a loss of taste buds to them.
Before she could finish speaking, Tang Ye gestured with his hand for her to leave, and the woman could only nod her head, lift the dinner plate, and walk to the elevator to leave.
After she left, Li Qingtian shut the door and then walked into the kitchen. She opened the refrigerator and saw an array of foods, looking nothing like it did before the Apocalypse.
"It seems you haven’t had it too bad."
With her back turned to Tang Ye, she uttered those words, and Tang Ye knew they were meant for herself. From the tone of her voice, Tang Ye sensed the relaxation in Li Qingtian’s heart. It seemed she was relieved to know that her dearest ones hadn’t suffered in the worst of times, alleviating her worries.
He didn’t speak, just watched her silhouette. In his eyes, her figure seemed to radiate a soft glow, warming his own soul.
Li Qingtian took out some ingredients from the refrigerator, fetched the chopping board hanging on the wall, and neatly arranged it, then placed the cooking ingredients on top, turning around to smile at Tang Ye and said, "Henian, it’s been a long time since you’ve tasted my cooking, hasn’t it?"
Tang Ye opened his mouth but couldn’t utter a word; he could only nod in agreement.
"Then wait a moment, it’ll be ready soon."
Tang Ye nodded again, and Li Qingtian didn’t speak further. Tang Ye sat back on the sofa, and the room returned to tranquility, easing the air around him considerably, devoid of the tension experienced in Li Qingtian’s presence.
Soon, warmth enveloped him, but unknowingly he thought of Li Qingtian in the kitchen, and his grip tightened involuntarily.
"No, no, she is Li Qingtian, but I am not Li Henian, why should I be afraid of her?"
Tang Ye shook his head, trying to calm himself.
Outside, the sunlight cast dancing shadows through the trees, and as the breeze blew, that peacefulness of the times made Tang Ye feel that everything was wonderful.
Before long, he heard the sounds from the kitchen—the placement of a pan on the stove, the igniting of the stove, the even chopping sounds on the ingredients, the chopping board snapping crisply, the sizzle of cold oil hitting the hot pan, and then the chopped ingredients being poured into the pan.
All these sounds were incredibly familiar, just like when he would come home from school, sit on the sofa waiting for either his sister or parents to serve the prepared meals on the table and start eating. The only difference now was that there were no TV dramas to distract Tang Ye, just a wait.
Soon, a scent drifted from the kitchen that wasn’t the familiar aroma he knew; Tang Ye sniffed, and it wasn’t as tempting as the dishes made by five-star hotel chefs in the United District before the Apocalypse. The smell was plain, the most common home-cooked meal anyone could have before the Apocalypse, nothing special, yet it offered a sense of home, a sense of happiness.
Tang Ye took a deep breath. As a zombie with a rather dull sense of taste for human food, he sensed that aroma, oddly enough. Li Qingtian seemed to like heavily flavored food after he became a zombie, so from the meal’s smell, Tang Ye detected a familiar spicy scent.
There was also salt, though it was unclear if Li Qingtian’s lack of culinary skill made her use too much salt or if she deliberately added more knowing Tang Ye’s preference for strong flavors.
After a while, Li Qingtian walked out of the kitchen with a plate of food, set it on the table in front of Tang Ye, smiled at him, and then returned to the kitchen. In this manner, dish after dish was brought out and placed on the table, filling the entire room with the aroma of the meals.
"All set, let’s eat."
She scooped two bowls of rice from the rice cooker, handing one to Tang Ye and holding the other in her hand.
Tang Ye held the bowl in his hand, somewhat dazed. Li Qingtian didn’t know that he wouldn’t eat rice unless necessary because he preferred strong flavors, and anything mildly flavored was tasteless to him, and plain rice was no different from chewing wax. Moreover, even human food couldn’t provide him much energy, and if Tang Ye wanted to eat his fill, he could consume one-tenth of the United District’s food reserve in a day.
Therefore, Tang Ye didn’t eat rice but only the dishes, and every meal was just about tasting the flavors.
