Chapter 978: Chapter 975: Arrival of the God of Death

Reluctantly, he could only return to his office. Everything was too eerie. Regardless of whether anything had happened, he decided to check his own office first. If nothing was amiss, all the better; he would just wait until soldiers appeared and then leave with them.

For some reason, he now felt terrified of the outside world, as if he were a vampire forever hiding in the shadows, most fearful of places bathed in sunlight.

Having returned to his office, he shut the door and casually locked it to prevent any horrific entities from his imagination from breaking in.

Approaching the shelf, he picked up a pack of cigarettes and then sat back down in his office. Bored, he picked up a supply and demand form he had not examined closely before. Just as he did this, he suddenly felt as if many people were around him. This idea made his skin crawl, and the scalp on his head nearly flew off.

"Who’s there!"

He yelled, quickly looking around, but it seemed it was all in his imagination—there was no one around him. Moreover, the light outside was ample, brightly illuminating his office. If there were really anyone there, he wasn’t blind or nearsighted; how could he not see them?

He sighed in relief, chalking it up to being overly nervous, but still, he didn’t dare muster the courage to go out alone. He could only wait, wait for soldiers to come in so he could leave with them.

Smacking his own head, a self-mocking smile appeared on his face as he continued to look at the supply form on his desk. Yet, his mind wasn’t really on it, as he anxiously awaited the soldiers to appear in the hallway, even just one would be reassuring.

This place had seemingly become his prison, starting from the moment he noticed the surrounding quietness.

But after only a short while, that eerily skin-crawling sensation returned, the feeling that people were all around him.

He kept reminding himself in his mind that it was just an illusion and not to pay it any mind, but he couldn’t help but look up, and upon doing so, he saw five or six figures surrounding him. In that instant, his blood ran cold, his hair stood on end, and the look in his eyes froze for a moment. It was as though all the hairs on his body were brushed by an invisible comb!

The sudden fright caused his legs to involuntarily kick forward, the front legs of the chair lifted off the ground, and with a "bang," the quartermaster fell backward off the chair, screaming, "Ghosts!"

This really scared him, and as he came to his senses, he noticed that the figures were senior members of the Peace Party, and they had appeared in his office.

"You... Marshal!"

These people included Bai Huipeng and Huang Quanjiu, as well as the vice-chairman of the Peace Party, Xu Haishui, all significant figures in the United District, and amongst them was the most frightening presence, their marshal, the reaper, Li Henian!

"Marshal, you... Why are you here? You didn’t tell me. Please, have a seat."

He couldn’t contain his inner terror. The senior members of the Peace Party appearing in such a strange way surely wasn’t for anything good—they were here to trouble him, but what could he do?

Li Henian was a Level 7 New Human; he was merely a minor Level 3 New Human himself. To a Level 3 New Human, a Level 7 was akin to a godly being.

All he could do was initially address Tang Ye, hoping they hadn’t discovered anything amiss about him—otherwise, the consequences would be dire!

Using both hands to gesture, he straightened the chair that had fallen on the ground, attempting to have Tang Ye sit down. However, everyone could clearly see that his hands were shaking tremendously, indicating to anyone astute that he was hiding something, otherwise why would he appear so guilty?

However, Tang Ye paid no heed to his words. When he had previously fallen to the ground, the supply forms scattered everywhere. As he bent down to pick them up one by one, the quartermaster hurriedly said, "Marshal, let me do it, I’ll pick them up, haha~"

He laughed awkwardly, picking up the supply forms from the ground. Seeing this, Tang Ye stood up, looking coldly at him until he had completely gathered all the forms. Then, he took them one by one to examine.

With every supply form Tang Ye flipped through, the quartermaster’s expression grew more tense.

Most of the forms were fine, and most reasonable requests had been approved. However, Tang Ye soon found one that was suspect and casually pulled this form out, placing it in front of the quartermaster and coldly asked, "Why are there no signatures for the supply recipient on this form?"

The quartermaster’s heart tightened, and he quickly stepped forward for a closer look. Indeed, there was a supply form with no listed source—a bad sign.

He knew better than anyone why that was; it was demands from the underground forces. But to avoid raising suspicion among the Peace Party’s senior ranks, he had specifically altered a form—of course, he couldn’t write the names of those from the underground forces requesting supplies!

Today was too sudden; how could he have known that morning that this reaper would suddenly bring people to his office for an inspection?

As the saying goes, "You can’t frequent the riverside without getting your shoes wet." Today, not only did he get his shoes wet, but he had fallen right into the water!

"This... this, I’ll have someone check immediately," he quickly said to Tang Ye, then reached for the supply form in Tang Ye’s hand.

But before his hand could touch it, he saw Tang Ye stretch his hand back, keeping the form out of the quartermaster’s reach.

"No need to check."

Tang Ye’s cold voice echoed through the office as he crumpled the supply form in his hand and casually tossed it aside. No one dared to pick it up. The quartermaster felt uneasy, his legs trembling, certain that the Marshal of the United District had definitely discovered something, which is why he had come here.

Good fortune or disaster? He couldn’t be sure. Even though he attempted to appear calm outwardly, the fear inside him caused beads of sweat as large as beans to form on his forehead.

As Tang Ye’s hand moved to the next supply form, he flipped through dozens more, until the last one. They all seemed fine, the only issue being the one he had just crumpled. He knew what was going on, but he didn’t state it explicitly.

Having placed the remaining supply forms back on the desk, Tang Ye noticed a form that had been held down by a pen holder. He removed the pen holder and pulled it out to see. A smile appeared on Tang Ye’s face, but imperceptibly, a killing intent began to emanate, chilling everyone present.
