Chapter 93: Chapter 90 Little Nannan_1

Shen Mingke once saw a post on Zhihu that asked: what does human flesh taste like?

He had read a few comments in the thread below the post.

Every time he thought of this, Shen Mingke felt a chill in his heart, with his stomach churning. He glanced at Zheng Minghui, who had only paused briefly before continuing to eat the meat.

But he was worried that his knowledge of meat was insufficient, what if his judgment was wrong?

As Shen Mingke was caught up in his thoughts, the woman noticed his expression and began to panic. She quickly said, "You’re not used to the taste, right?"

"I come from a family that used to run a slaughterhouse, and during the black rain, I stored a lot of meat, which has become a bit moldy over time! You’ll have to bear with it."

"Oh, sure, sure!"

The two men quickly chimed in. While Zheng Minghui didn’t think too much of it, Shen Mingke breathed a sigh of relief, happy that it wasn’t what he had been dreading.

Even though the apocalyptic darkness had enveloped the world, his heart hadn’t yet darkened to the point where he could consume human flesh with a poker face.

The couple exchanged a glance. The man nodded, and a flicker of appreciation passed through his eyes as he looked at his wife.

As Zheng Minghui swallowed the piece of meat he had been chewing, he started talking to the man who cut him off: "I know you brothers are very curious about what’s going on outside."

"I have no idea what has happened to these monsters; they’re now acting very strangely, especially at night."

Zheng Minghui and Shen Mingke gave the man a curious look. The man took a sip of his drink and continued, "Things have been getting better here. But we’re still waiting for the authorities to come clean up these monsters. We don’t dare to go outside. These monsters are most active at night and they hide in sewers and other dark places during the day. When this situation first started, many people went down there looking for food, but none of them came back."

"Are there other survivors here?" Shen Mingke queried.

"Plenty. Look, you see that tall building over there? It’s packed with people. There’s boss in there, bullying men and women alike. We don’t dare to go there! Just a few days ago, my son only wanted to get some food and... and... those people fed my son to the zombies... waa..."

As the woman was speaking, tears streamed down her cheeks when she mentioned her son, and the man fell silent.

"Those damn bastards!" Zheng Minghui slammed his fist onto the table after taking a gulp of beer, seemingly outraged by what had happened to their son.

As for what he was thinking, only he knew.

The man took a solemn sip of his drink, as if reminiscing about his son. However, Shen Mingke squinted. The woman’s story was full of holes!

Didn’t she say she had stored a lot of meat? Then why did her son go out searching for food? Wasn’t that a death wish?

These were the questions he had in his mind, but he didn’t voice them.

Just then, the man spoke again: "The zombies here are different from the ones before, I don’t know what caused

them to change. They are much worse than before! Come; you can see for yourselves why we don’t dare to go out at night."

With that, the man went to a refrigerator and took out a flashlight. He led Shen Mingke and Zheng Minghui toward a window.

"What... what are you doing? Aren’t you afraid of attracting zombies?"

Seeing him switch on the flashlight, Zheng Minghui was taken back. In his knowledge, zombies at night are extremely sensitive to light, and a slightest mistake could attract a big crowd. Moreover, they have an exceptional sense of smell, like dogs, and can tell the difference between their kin and humans!

However, the man just smiled mysteriously at him, replying, "Don’t worry, these zombies are different, so we call them Night Demons!"

With this, he shone the flashlight on the street below.

When no odd movements were perceived, the two men gathered their courage to stand next to the man and looked down. They saw the flashlight beam illuminating several zombies whose red muscles were grotesquely exposed.

Their skin appeared to have been stripped off, revealing internal organs. Every step they took left a bloody footprint behind. The beam from the flashlight did not seem to bother them at all. They continued to shuffle aimlessly, letting out occasional eerie groans.

"What happened here?"

"It’s been like this for days. Remember, never go out at night!"

The man gave his advice, mixed with deep-rooted fear.

"Let’s eat, stop looking!" the woman suggested.

The three of them returned to the table and continued to drink. In the distance, numerous candles were lit in a tall building, attracting the gaze of the two men.

This was something they had never seen before in this apocalyptic era. Ever since the disaster struck, zombies had developed a strange obsession with light during the night. If they saw a source of light, they would rush towards it. This was a survival skill that the ones who were lucky enough to survive had learnt.

No matter what, they must never switch on the lights at night; otherwise, frightening creatures would appear right beside them, ready to tear them apart!

At a nearby street, hordes of Night Demons surrounded two strange figures – one tall, the other shorter; the shorter one was around two meters tall and clothed in an all-new black trench coat. The tall one, almost four meters in height, was draped with a blood-stained curtain, with a baby girl seemingly perched on its robust neck.

Tang Ye used to wear a grey trench coat, but it was riddled with bullet holes after the attack on the safe zone, so he had switched to the largest black trench coat he could find the day before.

As for the baby girl he rescued from a couple of ruffians at the hospital, Tang Ye didn’t know her name; for convenience, he just nicknamed her Little Nannan.

At that moment, Little Nannan was happily perched on Ah Fu’s neck, giggling. She showed no fear for the monsters surrounding them. She even occasionally poked at Tang Ye’s hair with a Bala Magic Fairy Stick he had given her.

It had been several days since his attack on the safe zone. He had brought back several cans of milk powder for Little Nannan, but with her unexpectedly huge appetite (was she the reincarnation of Zhu Bajie?), the milk powder was quickly gone!

Once, Tang Ye had left to find her some food, only to come back and find her eating milk powder straight from the can! Just yesterday, the last of the milk powder had been finished off. Tang Ye had looked through half of the baby store for more milk powder but couldn’t find any; any store that had supplies had been looted by the damn survivors.

In the end, all he could do was to bring Ah Fu and Little Nannan to the commercial district on the east side of the city.
