Chapter 899: Chapter 895: Tonight is Jin Ye

"You hit someone and then run away, is there something unsettled?"

Tang Ye’s icy voice was like a curse that made the attacker’s legs go weak, and he leaned against the wall, collapsing into a seated position, his pride as a Level 5 New Human completely lost at this moment.

"How... how did you get here?" he asked, his voice trembling with fear.

Tang Ye glanced at the Ion Sniper Rifle in his hand and chuckled, "Ion Sniper Rifle, not bad. You managed to get your hands on it despite the strict control..."

As he spoke, Tang Ye stepped forward, snatched the Ion Sniper Rifle from his hands, and felt it, "It’s quite new, seems like you didn’t get it during the era of the seven committees. You, this guy, have some connections in the Peace Party, huh? Very good. When I go back this time, let me find out which bastard let you have it; I’ll kill him!"

A murderous look flashed in Tang Ye’s eyes, and at that moment, Bai Huipeng led more than a dozen fully armed Peace Party soldiers running towards them.

"Marshal, those people have been dealt with, but the person you caught just now has already died."

With a slight tilt of his head and then a nonchalant shake, Tang Ye responded, "No problem, we’ve caught another one."

Bai Huipeng glanced at the Level 5 New Human sitting collapsed on the ground, a murderous intent flashing in his eyes.

"Take him back! Interrogate him thoroughly. A Level 5 New Human, huh, they are not that easy to kill. Use whatever harsh torture you’ve got until this bastard talks."

"Yes, sir!"

The Peace Party soldiers nodded, bound him with pseudo-nano rope, then led him downstairs and put him into an armored vehicle. Hundreds of New Human soldiers surrounded the armored vehicle, escorting the Level 5 New Human towards the Central United District.

In an unnamed corner, a man stood by the window silently watching the armored vehicle being surrounded by soldiers, his brow slightly furrowed. The nearly dusky sun stretched his shadow long across the ground.

"Jin Ye, Yi Long has been captured. There are too many people from the Peace Party below, and our small street is now swarming with them. If we make a move, we’ll be spotted," another man reported.

The man named Jin Ye nodded, his hand repeatedly touching a golden pendant engraved with two characters — Jin Ye.

He was the strongest Bounty Hunter in the United District, Jin Ye!

Like most people before the Apocalypse, Jin Ye was just a nobody leading a mundane life. You couldn’t say he lacked ambition, as he showed up to work every day. You couldn’t call him lazy but despite the exhausting work, he persevered.

Earning just enough salary to last a month, not starving yet not full, life was meaningless. The aging parents he feared for, but he was helpless. Before the Apocalypse, opportunities were scarce, everyone needed a chance to stand out, yet holding onto that chance when it arrived was another matter altogether.

He never believed he could fully seize any opportunity; his aimless life was like drunkenly staggering alone at night, the rot of city life was like the stench of excrement in the air — repulsive but inescapable!

The day the Apocalypse came, it was the end of days for everyone! Even Jin Ye believed so.

But as he lived longer in the post-apocalyptic world, drifting daily between life and death, he found that his sense of crisis had greatly diminished, especially after learning of his parents’ death. He wasn’t very sad; instead, he felt as though a great burden had been lifted from his shoulders.

That light-as-a-feather feeling puzzled him, but he couldn’t pinpoint what was strange about it. Life after the Apocalypse wasn’t as leisurely as laying on the bed after work and scrolling through funny skits like before the Apocalypse.

Each time he returned to his hideout, he had to consider food—how long his stored food would last, how long he could survive, how to handle the Level 3 zombie he’d encountered yesterday, how to deal with the powerful individual he’d offended, and how to kill the Level 5 New Human, consume his Evolution Crystal Core, and evolve to Level 5 himself.

These issues made his life busy. He no longer felt he was wasting time. He stopped staying up late and engaging in pointless activities. His time became precious!

Over time, he found that he increasingly enjoyed this way of life. At Level 4, he thought there were many stronger than him, but after reconnecting with human society, he realized that he was one of the strongest!

His emotions were incredibly mixed up then, and it was at that time that he no longer saw himself as worthless. On his first night in the United District, he saw many people flattering him. At that moment, he felt like an emperor from ancient society walking the streets, with everyone treating him with great respect.

It was also that night that he saw the bustling lights of the United District, as lively as the nights before the Apocalypse, creating a stark contrast with the desolate lands. In that moment, some of his views began to shift slowly.

Is it really the Apocalypse? It’s only the Apocalypse for those living at the bottom of society, while for the high-tier New Humans, to call it heaven might not even be an exaggeration!

From ancient times, every change of dynasty has been a shift in social classes in human society. The longer a dynasty lasted, the more rigid its social stratification became. Once the lower classes lost opportunities to move up, that marked the beginning of the end for that dynasty. Of course, many factors were involved, but without exception, no dynasty lasted forever.

Just like how a perpetual motion machine could never exist.

But every reshuffling of human societal hierarchies before had been caused by humans themselves, whereas the Apocalypse was something that Mother Earth wanted to see, or perhaps, something dictated by the gods.

Yet it must be said that each time the classes of human society changed, it was always the most chaotic. However, the greater the chaos, the more opportunities it offered to humanity!

A nobody turning into a revered figure within less than four years was something hardly imaginable before the Apocalypse.

But in the Apocalypse, he achieved it, and he was not the only one; there were countless others like him in East China, West China, Central China, North China.

That night, he indulged in a life he wouldn’t have dared to imagine before the Apocalypse, looking out at the lands enveloped by darkness and at the golden glow of the United District lit by numerous lights.

His mind was filled with thoughts— the United District was like a huge piece of gold radiating its light in the darkness, and he remembered that night, and tonight was indeed a Jin Ye!

His gaze moved back and forth among the advancing troops of the Peace Party soldiers. Throughout, he never once saw Tang Ye’s figure, no matter how conspicuous or unignorable Tang Ye’s presence was; he never paused on Tang Ye for a second!

Thanks to Qian Wu, Nangong☆Murder God, and to think it’s my own reward!
