I am the Zombie King of the Apocalyptic World -
Chapter 868 - 864: The Eyeballs
Chapter 868: Chapter 864: The Eyeballs
She held a bag of toys in her hand, which included Barbie dolls, Ultraman figures, baby toys, and a variety of others, for both boys and girls. These were all collected with great difficulty. Among them, the most precious to her was a blue toy car, a final gift from her mother when she starved to death, which she had kept all along.
Gazing at the toy car, she could recall what her mother looked like. She was afraid she might forget her, but it seemed as if her mom’s soul had taken residence inside the car.
As usual, she placed all the toys in front of the makeshift window formed by the drainage cover, taking great care to handle them without making any noise.
The toy car had a friction motor; if she rotated the rear wheels clockwise or pulled the car backward for a while, it would drive forward by itself, although only for a short distance.
Just like before, she turned the rear wheels clockwise to the limit, then, holding the car, extended her hand outside, making sure she could reach it in case something went wrong, and suddenly let go.
The wheels of the car touched the ground, and, with a rumble, propelled the whole toy car towards the drainage opening.
A girl, already twelve or thirteen, who had started junior high before the Apocalypse, was still playing with such childish things. For this, many adults had criticized her, but she didn’t mind because, in the early days of the Apocalypse, the only things that could amuse her were these toys which meant nothing in the eyes of the adults.
Watching the toy car bumping towards her brought a happy smile to the girl’s face. In her eyes, the toy car racing towards her was like her mother, rushing over after she fell as a little child.
She opened her arms as if to embrace it, but soon, the car hit a small stone, made a sharp turn, and veered in another direction.
"Oh no!"
A sense of dread filled her mind as she quickly reached out to grab it. The toy car was important to her; she couldn’t lose it. However, she only touched the rear end of the car and, far from grabbing it, she accidentally flipped it over, causing it to fly a distance away.
That distance left her feeling hopeless; unless her arms could grow several more inches, she was simply out of reach.
Anxiety welled up inside, but she dared not make too much noise for fear of drawing the attention of the zombies nearby. She stood up, trying to stretch her arm further, but the toy car was still too far away.
Helplessly, she left the room and soon returned with a man.
"Dad, my car fell outside. I need to get it back."
The man was strong, with a laser weapon wrapped in white tape slung across his back. After hearing his daughter’s account of the "big trouble," his face darkened.
"It’s just a toy. You always play with it, and now that it’s fallen outside, you go fetch it. Do you have any idea how dangerous it is out there?"
His voice rose with controlled rebuke, followed by the girl’s tearful voice.
"But... it was given to me by mom..."
"Nonsense!"
The man was clearly irritated, casting the girl a stern glance before walking out, leaving her alone and helpless, staring at the small car. Her mother had died early in the Apocalypse, and over the years, the man’s love for her had worn thin with time.
After her father left, the girl brought over a table, taking great care not to make noise as she continued to reach for the toy car, but each attempt ended in failure. Reluctantly, she had to give up and stood behind the drainage cover, staring blankly at the toy car.
She hoped that her little car would stay there forever, never to be picked up by anyone else, and that one day, she would definitely retrieve it.
A gust of wind blew, pushing the toy car less than a centimeter aside. It wasn’t a large distance, but it wrenched her heart severely.
A gust of wind could move her car, what if she couldn’t find it after sleeping? Would it have disappeared by the next day?
The more she thought about it, the more anxious she became. Finally, she reached out her hand again, trying to retrieve it, even if she risked being suddenly bitten by a zombie.
But this attempt undoubtedly failed. Withdrawing her hand, she looked silently at the upturned car on the ground and cried, tears continuously sliding down the corners of her eyes.
"No... don’t... wu wu, Mommy..."
Drip~ Drip~
She didn’t know how long she had been crying when she heard something moving beside her. Turning to look, she nearly jumped in fright. Beneath her feet, there was an eyeball crawling up the wall!
The eyeball was blood-red with a chilling black slit pupil, about the size of a human eye, only with four small legs underneath it resembling human fingers.
Due to the sewer entrance often letting in water during rain, the stone wall below the outlet was worn smooth. The eyeball had tried for a while but couldn’t climb up, so it anxiously paced near her feet.
Noticing that it had caught her attention, the eyeball turned its body to look at her, then quickly jumped off the table her foot was pressing on.
It seemed to be frightened, but the girl was far more terrified, falling off the table.
With a ’bang’, her mind went blank. Making noise, she realized zombies were highly sensitive to sound, and they would come rushing over!
However, after waiting for a while, the zombies outside seemed to be deaf. Not even one approached, which gave her a sigh of relief.
She turned her gaze back to the eyeball with four small legs and noticed that it hadn’t attacked her. Instead, after her fall, it had returned to the corner of the table, struggling to climb toward the mudguard over the sewer entrance.
Did it want to get out?
The girl knew it had no ill intent towards her, but its appearance was terrifying. An eyeball with four legs didn’t look like a creature at all but rather like a kind of zombie, as only in zombies would one find such Cthulhu-esque beings.
However, even though it looked frightening, seeing its futile attempts at climbing the wall made it appear somehow cute to her.
"Hey~"
She called out, but the eyeball ignored her and continued its attempt to climb.
"Hey, hey."
After calling out a few more times and still being ignored, she extended her hand and carefully poked the eyeball, her finger pulling back with a trail of disgusting mucus.
She didn’t mind it, and as soon as she poked it, the eyeball stopped trying to climb the wall and turned to look at her.
"Hey, do you want to climb up?"
The slit pupil in the eyeball wobbled back and forth, as if pondering. Finally, it nodded its largely encompassing eyeball, seemingly in affirmation. The girl, seeing this, cried out in surprise.
"Can you understand what I’m saying?"
