Chapter 866 - 862: The Familiar Black Fog
Chapter 866: Chapter 862: The Familiar Black Fog
The sound Tang Ye made seemed to be devoured by something, and he couldn’t hear anything himself; the empty cosmos appeared ominously silent.
After an unknown duration of constant struggling to return to the embrace of Mother Earth, Earth finally took notice of him. Her gravity began pulling Tang Ye towards the surface.
Tang Ye breathed a sigh of relief, his abnormal body slowly returning to normal, and the diminishing power also returning. His body began to plummet towards the ground at high speed; this feeling of free fall brought him unprecedented comfort.
He closed his eyes in enjoyment, but just as he did, he abruptly opened them again. Had he just seen something?
Tang Ye reacted quickly and looked in that direction instantaneously—it was a mass of fog, so black that it stood out strikingly against the white clouds, nearly impossible to miss at a glance.
"What is that?"
The black fog itself didn’t seem peculiar, but what was strange was that it gave Tang Ye a feeling of being simultaneously very close yet far away.
After a while, the black fog seemed to notice Tang Ye looking at it, and it began to vanish before his eyes in a way that defied understanding.
It was like a movie effect, gradually fading, becoming transparent, and then disappearing right where it was, as if it had never appeared at all.
"What was that?"
Tang Ye frowned, puzzled. For some reason, ever since he had seen the thing, his heart had been pounding as if there was something eerily familiar about it. However, this familiarity was not the kind one feels from having seen something similar before, but rather an entirely unusual type of familiarity.
To describe it in Tang Ye’s own words, it felt very familiar, but you couldn’t pinpoint exactly where you knew it from. It was like dreaming, having a dream that felt real, but upon waking, you understood you had never truly dreamed it before. So where did this sense of familiarity come from?
Tang Ye wanted to approach the black fog, but it chose a very cunning time to disappear. Tang Ye knew he couldn’t get close; it might vanish completely before he even had a chance to approach it.
"Why is this..." After careful reflection, Tang Ye’s mind was filled with doubts.
"Never mind, maybe I’m thinking too much. After all, the apocalypse is filled with all sorts of demons and ghosts."
It was only an interlude. Soon, Tang Ye did not dwell on it, and passing through the cloud layer, he fixed his gaze on the ground, trying to locate the approximate position of the United District, like a sharp arrow descending from the sky.
Boom!
Several hours later, on the wasteland of Cheng City, Province C, a meteor ablaze with flames smashed into the ground. Countless zombies were stirred up by the resulting fierce wind, tossing them around. As they struggled to their feet and roared furiously in the direction of the meteor’s impact, just as they began to make a sound, their throats seemed to be clutched by an invisible hand, and they could only emit a single syllable before being silenced.
They could feel that there was a terribly fearsome fellow of their kind ahead!
"It’s daytime already, huh."
Tang Ye surveyed his surroundings, unsure exactly where he was. He wanted to check the time, but the watch he had been wearing had been torn into parts scattered around by the resistance created during his rapid descent.
The business suit he had worn before was completely gone; now Tang Ye was literally naked.
Space was tens of thousands of kilometers from the ground, and even though a Level 7 zombie flew back and forth at full speed, it still took nearly seven hours. By this time, the eastern hemisphere of Earth had moved from night to day.
After a successful landing, the ground had been smashed into a crater about twenty meters in diameter. The surrounding zombies, not knowing where the storm had tossed them, now began to realize what was happening. Not paying much attention to the scene, they’d run over excitedly at the sound, thinking a living creature had appeared.
When they realized it was one of their own, they immediately reverted to their normal state.
Tang Ye shook his body, shaking off the pebbles mixed in his hair, then crawled out from the rubble. A wisp of black mist appeared out of nowhere, wrapping around Tang Ye’s body and miraculously transformed into a simple black garment.
After dealing with that, Tang Ye began looking for clues in the streets overgrown with zombified plants. This was a place he had not been to before; he needed to know exactly where he was.
He needed to return to the United District.
After walking around cluelessly and just as Tang Ye was about to give up, he suddenly spotted an old sign hanging on a shop front. The characters on the sign were severely worn by the years, and oxidization had made many things more vulnerable since the apocalypse began. One of the characters was completely illegible.
[小*电瓶车,Cheng City Headquarters.]
Tang Ye didn’t care about what was written on the shop front sign; he was more interested in the last four characters.
"Cheng City Headquarters? It seems this is Cheng City," he said.
In China, in every city, it’s common to see shop signs indicating the city’s name. Upon finding himself in an unknown and unfamiliar city, those shop signs easily revealed his current location.
"Cheng City is more than fifty kilometers from Longyang City, not too far," he muttered.
Tang Ye shook his head. Dropping from space and landing exactly in the United District was too difficult – after all, Earth is so vast. It’s as hard as expecting a charger to directly plug into a socket when thrown.
Sensing Xu Haishui’s location in his mind and confirming the direction, Tang Ye headed that way. He moved quickly, like a gust of wind, and soon left Cheng City.
However, just as he reached a street in a small town, he suddenly stopped.
His arrival made the zombies there instinctively clear the way; those higher-level zombies with some intelligence were so scared that they curled up on the ground, not daring to move.
But ahead of Tang Ye, his gaze was fixed on a sewer opening on the street side. He had clearly seen a toy car next to the sewer entrance, but quickly, a little hand reached out from a slit in the mudguard and took the toy car back.
"Are people living here?" he wondered.
Curious, Tang Ye walked over and stood at the edge of the sewer entrance. Suddenly, he bent down abruptly, his white hair hanging directly downwards, his black and red eyes peering in front of the mudguard.
He saw a little girl, dumbstruck with fear, staring blankly into his eyes, foolishly holding the toy car without putting it down.
Finally, she snapped out of it. Instinctively wanting to scream to buffer her fear, but the habits formed in the apocalypse quickly made her cover her mouth.
However, this shock was temporary. As Tang Ye suddenly appeared and then quickly stood back up, below his feet and separated by a cement board, there was a person. With zombies rampant outside, the little girl might have been living there all this time.
