Chapter 82: Chapter 79: People without Worries_1
Tang Ye, his gigantic mouth ripped open to his ears, bit down on the metallic exoskeleton Ning Tianlang was wearing. In a fluid motion, he pulled up with a jerk, causing the blue, flowing liquid on the exoskeleton to momentarily illuminate, its electrical sounds sputtering and crackling to life!
Meanwhile, Ning Tianlang also woke up with a start, shaking his dizzy head. Although Tang Ye’s attack was fierce, his protective exoskeleton absorbed much of the force, ensuring that his body suffered no damage. His only complaints were a nauseating, flipping feeling in his stomach and a lingering dizziness. Otherwise, he was fine.
Through the visor of the exoskeleton, he saw Tang Ye draw a component using his mouth and then proceed back for the second bite.
The sight caused a twinge of pain to travel through Ning Tianlang’s heart. The gear was made using cutting-edge nanotechnology and while it was technically an experimental prototype, it was nevertheless incredibly expensive. While money became useless after the apocalypse, this modular exoskeletal armor could definitely be bartered for a mountain of food!

[Warning! Warning! Air conditioning system damaged!]
...
Warning lights kept flickering on the screen of his face mask as an electronic voice continuously announced the system damage.
"Die!" Ning Tianlang bellowed at Tang Ye, his voice brimming with murderous intent.
Tang Ye was taken aback, pulling back his mouth, apparently surprised the man he had bitten so violently hadn’t died. Just as he was thinking to distance himself from Ning Tianlang, Ning Tianlang extended a hand to clamp down his mouth whilst wrestled himself free from Tang Ye’s bony arm. He then used the leverage gained from a push against Tang Ye’s thigh to fly up, kicking Tang Ye mid-air in the process!
Bang!
Tang Ye was sent reeling backward, steadying himself after being pushed back four or five steps. His left arm swiftly separated into ten bony spikes, all aimed at Ning Tianlang.
"Get lost!"
Ning Tianlang roared with a strong, commanding voice that carried the gravitas of someone used to holding power. He ducked to avoid the bone spikes shooting towards him like tentacles. He fought back, using the exoskeleton’s blade to slice upward, chopping off six of Tang Ye’s spikes, each of them falling to the ground, severed and jagged.
Tang Ye immediately retracted all his spikes, glancing at what were now of varied lengths. His heart was filled with rage.
Roar!
He let out an outraged roar, directing a group of zombies to attack Ning Tianlang.
"Retreat!"
Having nearly slashed off Tang Ye’s hand, Ning Tianlang didn’t stick around. He beckoned his troops to begin the withdrawal. Coldly, he shot Tang Ye a glance. This zombie, who had damaged his armor, was on his hate list, but he had no time for a squabble at the moment!
Slashing down a zombie, Ning Tianlang spun around to activate his exoskeleton’s thrusters. Bending his knees, he sprung into one big leap, landing in front of the retreating soldiers and heading towards the last remaining helicopter nearby.
"Hurry up! Those at the back, move faster!" Ning Tianlang hollered at the soldiers at the rear of the retreat.
Although Ning Tianlang was the one to propose sacrificing a few soldiers to protect the majority, he was inherently a high-level executive of a tech company pre-apocalypse. No matter how much he hardened his heart, he could never really be indifferent to the value of life.
Now, he would save as many soldiers as he could! He was the first one to jump on the helicopter’s footboard, reaching out a hand to Yang Hong, who was being propped up by a soldier.
"Give me your hand, I’ll pull you up!"
Those were Ning Tianlang’s urgent words, but Yang Hong halted instead of extending his hand. He looked back at the soldiers entangled in fierce combat with the zombies.
The helicopter, already half-filled with survivors, couldn’t possibly accommodate all the soldiers engaged with the zombies. Even if it could, the soldiers wouldn’t make it in time. Moreover, the overwhelming number of zombies could potentially destroy the helicopter.
Each soldier falling to the ground was heart-wrenching for Yang Hong. Those were the brothers he had come up with; the unforgiving training they had endured and the memories they had created were indelible. There was a camaraderie formed amongst the men.
"What the hell are you doing? The zombies are here, if you don’t get on you’ll doom us all." A survivor in the helicopter cabin yelled anxiously.
The hordes of zombies howling chillingly were a terrifying sight. These survivors were mere civilians; one couldn’t expect them to be willing to sacrifice themselves for others.
"Exactly, let’s get a move on. We’ll run out of time!"
"Pilot, go! Don’t wait for them."
"Those soldiers think they’re so tough; on what grounds do we have to wait for them?"
"Go to hell, we’re leaving."
"Why are we the last ones to leave? How is this fair? Now we must wait for these assholes?"
The survivors within the helicopter began to throw in their two cents, growing increasingly malicious with their words. Ning Tianlang, ice-cold, turned his gaze back to them, bellowed, "Shut up! Keep making a fuss and I’ll toss you out!"
His roar instantly subdued the cabin. All the survivors immediately kept quiet, no one daring to make a sound.
Yang Hong cast a complex look towards Ning Tianlang. Just then, a cacophony of clattering sounds echoed as vast herds of frantic zombies broke through the safety fence, running towards the helicopter with claws exposed and teeth bared. Resolute, Yang Hong finally spoke to Ning Tianlang, "You guys go first!"
Snap!
Without waiting for Ning Tianlang’s response, Yang Hong closed the helicopter door. Ning Tianlang caught sight of Yang Hong’s resolute face through the gap as the door closed. Unconsciously, he stood up straight and saluted him.
That was a true soldier, fearless in the face of death! But it was nonsensical, futile even, to choose to die with the soldiers when he could have chosen life – one could even say it was laughable. Wouldn’t it be better to spend the rest of his life with loved ones?
Despite this though, Yang Hong, as a person, had earned Ning Tianlang’s respect!
Casually, Tang Ye strolled into the safe zone’s interior. Upon seeing him, Yang Hong’s eyes filled with deep hatred, as though fraught memories were replaying in his mind.
About a month and a half ago, on the day of the post-apocalyptic breakout, Yang Hong’s parents, wife, and child were bitten and killed by a group of zombies, then turned into zombies themselves. After three days, he returned home with an army, only to find his entire family had transformed into zombies. It was such a crushing experience, as if his heart was burdened by a massive weight; it was a combination of unbearable pain and suffocation.
In the end, it was he who took his family’s lives by his own hand, with the very army dagger he held now. The pain was unbearable. Today, he was a man who had lost his family.
Some people live for their dreams. Some live driven by their beliefs. And yet more live for their families, to keep them from suffering, to provide a better life. This kind of attachment is a powerful drive.
Yang Hong was the third kind. He had a happy family and no worries about resources; he truly cherished this familial bond. But now, everything was ruined! Naturally, he feared nothing, not even death!
He was a man with nothing left to lose!
