Chapter 79: Chapter 76: Things I’m Not Qualified to Do_1
Heading in, Tang Ye felt a tingling fear. He was unsure whether his body’s defenses could withstand bullets, and having inspected the horde the day before, he knew that Level 1 zombies were few and far between, let alone Level 2 zombies.
Only he and Ah Fu were Level 2 zombies, and their only advantage lay in their shuddering numbers.
To quickly reach safety, Tang Ye didn’t slow down to weave with other zombies along the streets. He chose instead to continue climbing to the highest points of buildings and leaping across.
As Tang Ye moved, the booming sounds of gunfire echoed in from the distance, even before he caught sight of the safety zone!
"They’ve started fighting already!"
Glancing towards the location of the safety zone, Tang Ye hastened his pace, jumping down towards the ground on the street directly opposite the entrance.
Tang Ye’s hands, sharpened to claws, dug into the hard wall. His triangular teeth gleamed sharply as he surged diagonally downwards, like a gecko scaling the walls.
"Are the supplies all transported?" Military Officer Yang Hong shouted, gripping his submachine gun and firing at the oncoming zombie horde, interrogating the personnel behind him.
"Almost..."
"How much longer?"
"Not good, we don’t have enough helicopters, we can’t fit all the supplies!"
"Then forget about them! We have to retreat. Re..." Yang Hong’s eyes were horror-stricken as he shouted. Yet before he finished, a soldier’s voice abruptly interrupted him.
"Platoon leader! Look! Isn’t that a Level 2 zombie?"
A soldier pointed in the direction of Tang Ye, who was quickly scuttling down the side of the building, and Yang Hong followed the gesture. His eyes turned cold, and he proceeded to fire shots at Tang Ye.
"They’ve seen me?"
Roar!
With a swift roll, Tang Ye evaded the incoming bullets, rapidly regaining his footing. With an invincible air, he emerged from the shadows, charging at the one who shot at him.
"Damn it!"
Yang Hong’s eyes were full of rage. It was obvious he was the target of Tang Ye’s fixation. His instinct was to bring Tang Ye over, thinking this, he adjusted the muzzle and once more let out a burst of fire at Tang Ye.
For Tang Ye, each bullet, trailed by a long stream of airflow, turned into a brilliant trajectory aimed at different parts of his head and shoulders. He could see the path of each bullet!
Tang Ye’s pupils constricted and the bony claw in his right hand instantly protruded, grabbing onto the window frame of a nearby sedan, and then swung his body across.
Roar!
A deafening roar came from Tang Ye’s mouth. The zombies behind him, like they were responding to their king, collectively began to roar.
Roar! Roar! Roar!...
Three slender Speed Type zombies sprung out from the rear of the horde, each charging at a different angle towards the soldiers who were shooting frantically. When one zombie came upon Tang Ye, it stopped, evidently under Tang Ye’s mental control.
Tang Ye was increasingly anxious as he saw the frantic movement of the people behind the wire mesh. People were continuously shifting boxes of supplies, and with his sharp ears picking up the conversation between Yang Hong and his soldiers, he got the gist of their intent.
They’re planning an evacuation!
Fear seized Tang Ye. He was scared that with a relocation of the safety zone, he would lose sight of that girl. And to be with Ning Yu’er again, he was willing to sacrifice countless lives.
Tang Ye didn’t consider himself to be overly romantic, and he was confused by his actions, uncertain why he would perform such deeds, actions only suited to the big villain of a movie. Internally, he found it absurd, but a voice consistently urged him to proceed.
After becoming a zombie, Tang Ye found his thoughts becoming stranger. The once mournful tales no longer moved him and seemed tiresome if not laughable. When he and Ning Yu’er arrived at the safety zone, they witnessed a mother sacrificing her life for her child. Initially, Tang Ye could have saved them both, but instead, he watched coldly as the events unfolded, feeling nothing.
Had he found a seemingly reasonable excuse to cover up. Was it truly correct?
As a zombie, his heart had cooled and it was challenging to find joy in beautiful moments. During his mundane life with Ning Yu’er, everything was simple. Yet on the day she said goodbye, he began to reminisce, even feeling reluctant to part. He had no idea what his true feelings were. Was he easily moved or not?
Perhaps, his current self was his real self, a unique individual composed of complex contradictions.
"Anyone in my way, dies!"
Tang Ye roared hoarsely, his strong arm seizing a Speed Type zombie, using its body as a shield to deflect the bullets and charged at Yang Xiao!
"Keep firing, let’s take down the Level 2 zombie first!" The horror in Yang Hong’s eyes intensified. He had never encountered a zombie that could use its own kind to block damage. This was obviously a zombie with some intelligence, which further fueled his desire to kill Tang Ye.
The soldiers, hearing Yang Xiao’s orders, concentrated their fire on Tang Ye’s position. In no time, the Speed Type zombie that Tang Ye used as a shield was riddled with holes.
"Useless!"
Tang Ye was furious. He contemptuously glanced at the Level 1 zombie, flinging its bullet-ridden corpse at the soldiers’ fortification in the distant front.
Bullets sprayed around recklessly, and the soldiers’ eyes gradually reddened. Zombies in the front line of the horde were falling row by row. Even Level 1 power type zombies were unable to endure for long and were perforated quickly.
Tang Ye grew increasingly desperate when he saw this. He spotted many people boarding a giant helicopter behind the wire mesh, and the soldiers blocking the entrance from the horde were showing signs of retreat.
"Yu’er, get in!" Ning Tianlang commanded his daughter in front of a helicopter.
"What about them?" Ning Yu’er pointed and asked worriedly about the soldiers battling against the zombies outside.
"Don’t worry, they will come up soon."
"Okay then!"
Breathing a sigh of relief for the soldiers who were still outside, Ning Yu’er walked towards the helicopter. Looking out at the black sea of zombies, her eyes reflected a medley of emotions. She then glanced towards the North in the distance, murmuring, "Little Mister, goodbye..."
There was more than one helicopter transporting supplies inside the safety zone. Ning Yu’er boarded a helicopter that was positioned a distance away, just so, she did not see Tang Ye and he did not see her.
Ning Tianlang looked at the soldiers outside while grief flickered in his eyes, but in the end, he had no choice but to set his jaw tight.
Just a day ago, he was promising the soldiers fighting the zombies that they would be evacuated. How was it possible with so many zombies? Once the evacuation started, who would stop the horde?
Therefore, the soldiers had to be the sacrificial lambs, trading their lives for others’ safety. Though he knew he had no right to do
