Chapter 55: Chapter 52: A Surprise for You_1
"I...I...I’m sorry," Bai Qunchao stuttered, his eyes filled with sorrow.
"Go!"
"Fine, I’m going! I’m sorry!" Bai Qunchao’s eyes were filled with resolve. He loudly declared, picked up his gun and sprinted towards the door at the end of the alley.
"Qunchao!" Zhang Long suddenly called out to his retreating figure. Turning around, he heard another proclamation: "Let’s be brothers in our next life. Farewell!"
On hearing this, Bai Qunchao froze on the spot, a surge of emotion welling up, as tears filled his eyes.
"Ah-Long!"
"Go! Go. Remember to burn more paper money for me. I don’t want to be a poor ghost again."
Bai Qunchao nodded heavily, then turned and ran, stumbling every few steps. Behind him, zombies spilled out from the corner of the alley. He opened the door, rushed inside, as the roar from outside vanished instantly. He was now a flood of tears.
"Damn zombies! Wait for me!" Bai Qunchao’s face was filled with hatred. He wanted to open the door and take one last look at Zhang Long, but he dared not.
Outside, as Zhang Long faced the approaching zombies that were baring their teeth and clawing in his direction, his face twisted into a grimace. He raised his rifle and fired a relentless hail of bullets into the approaching crowd.
Click!
The ammunition was exhausted. He took one look at the still overwhelming horde, then closed his eyes, a peaceful smile on his face. The roar of the zombies was getting closer. He had already anticipated his fate – to be devoured alive. But at that moment, ten long bone spikes descended from the sky, impaling several zombies through!
"What’s happening?"
Confused, Zhang Long hadn’t yet felt the biting pain he was expecting. So, he opened his eyes, only to see a huge shadow descending from above, exterminating a handful of zombies underfoot.
Utterly shocked, Zhang Long loudly asked: "Who...who are you?"
The shadowy figure amazed him. What kind of power was that? He gazed upwards, but there was nowhere for the figure to have jumped from. The mysterious figure was dressed in black and carried a bag of food in one hand. But his other hand was invisible, with only several white bone whips extending from his forearm.
Growl...ugh~
The zombies in front seemed immobilized, as if controlled by something, and began to retreat. After all the zombies had disappeared from sight, the mysterious man in black turned around, facing Zhang Long.
On getting a clear view of this "human’s" face, Zhang Long’s heart skipped a beat. He was not a human, he was a zombie. It was Tang Ye!
Tang Ye’s pale pupils immediately honed in on the bite mark on Zhang Long’s arm. He had closely observed the situation earlier on, when Zhang Long told Bai Qunchao to leave him behind. After the zombie horde flooded in, he had decided to lend a hand. But now, Zhang Long had been bitten, and Tang Ye believed that he would soon turn into a mindless zombie.
Hee hee!
A zombie that hadn’t been controlled by Tang Ye suddenly rushed over. Tang Ye glanced at it disdainfully. His ten bone spikes instantly formed an arm, elbowing the attacking zombie with brutal force.
Boom!
Its head was smashed into the wall by Tang Ye, leaving a dense patch of cracks on the wall.
"This is the best I can do. Take care." Tang Ye murmured to himself, turning to leave.
"Wait...wait, are you an evolved zombie? This kind of power...Level 2?" Zhang Long spotted that Tang Ye, a zombie, was surprisingly not attacking him. He felt both amazed and delighted, sensing that he had stumbled upon something incredible. But seeing Tang Ye about to leave, he hastily called out to try and stop him.
Tang Ye heard him speak and slightly furrowed his brow, turning back to him. He looked at him questioningly, wondering what he meant by ’Level 2’. What was Level 2?
"Wait for me." Zhang Long struggled to his feet and then asked, "Can you understand what I’m saying?"
Tang Ye nodded his head.
"Phew~That’s good. So you have consciousness...or should I say, human thinking?" Zhang Long gestured with his hand, trying to communicate.
Tang Ye reflected for a moment, unsure whether he should answer this question. He didn’t want to end up being dissected by scientists. There was a touch of murderous intent in his eyes as he looked at Zhang Long. He just wanted to know what Level 2 meant. Was it a ranking system for zombies?
He nodded once more, affirming that he indeed had the consciousness of a zombie.
"How did you do it? Tell me!" On seeing Tang Ye nod, Zhang Long walked excitedly towards Tang Ye.
Tang Ye was slightly annoyed. All he wanted to know was what Level 2 meant. He wasn’t interested in anything else. He pulled out a piece of chalk and scrawled on the wall: What does Level 2 mean?
"Oh, Level 2...Level 2 means the evolutionary level of zombies, zombies like you. I don’t know which level you are at, but judging from your power, you should be at Level 2."
Tang Ye tilted his head in consideration. If zombies were ranked according to levels, he felt that he should probably be Level 3. He had figured out earlier that whenever he consumed the condensed matter in the brain of a zombie of a higher level than him, he would evolve to their level.
If he were Level 2 now, then what level was he when he had consumed the "jelly" from the giant zombie’s brain? Level 0.5?
Tang Ye was puzzled. So, he was Level 2, huh? He watched the whites of Zhang Long’s eyes gradually turning black. This must have been the transformation process from human to zombie. Tang Ye lowered his gaze and reached out his bone-arm towards him.
Zhang Long wanted to say something more, but Tang Ye seized him by his throat. With a swift crack, Zhang Long stopped breathing. Placing him gently on the floor, Tang Ye wondered whether strangling Zhang Long to death before he could transform would prevent him from turning into a zombie. But he couldn’t have just snapped his neck before he transformed, could he?
After glancing at his body, Tang Ye had initially wanted to bury him. Rare were those who would sacrifice themselves for others in this apocalyptic world. But Tang Ye didn’t have much time. He didn’t want to stay outside for too long. Otherwise, Ning Yu’er, who was all alone in the school dormitory, would surely get into trouble.
"I’m sorry, brother." Tang Ye mentally apologized to him. He then disappeared, leaving only a dark shadow behind him in a street teeming with zombies.
After evolving once again, his strength had surged. His speed had increased several times over. In no time, he reached the front gate of the dormitory. At first, Tang Ye wanted to knock on the door and enter, but he hesitated and decided to leave the bag of food outside the door instead.
He turned into a shadow again, a long afterimage trailing behind him on the ground as he sped towards the zombie army on the playground. A terrifying smile on his face, he unleashed his spiritual thread, establishing a mental connection with five or six hundred zombies in an instant.
Commanding this large army of zombies, he marched out of the school gates. Half an hour later, Tang Ye led the zombie army back. This time, each zombie was carrying a firecracker stick in its hand.
"Giving you a surprise!" Tang Ye smiled, picked up the bag left at the dorm entrance, opened the door and walked into the dormitory building...
