Chapter 519: Chapter 516: The Light at the End of Darkness_1

Tang Ye remembered who this room belonged to – it was Chen Chaoyang’s. More than once, he had heard sobbing and low growls coming from it, presumably the pain of losing a loved one.

Perhaps he had released most of his emotions by now, as the crying inside gradually subsided.

The door swung open, and Chen Chaoyang emerged from the room. He paused upon seeing Tang Ye, but quickly put on a smile that seemed as normal as ever. He called him "boss" as always, but his eyes displayed a lifeless gray.

"What happened to you..." Tang Ye knitted his eyebrows. Chen Chaoyang’s hair, now dyed white for some unknown reason, gave off a vibe of lifelessness, akin to a dead snake’s. The most chilling aspect was his mouth, an injury inflicted by Liang Hanyang that had yet to heal.

It was not that it could not heal, but every time it began to heal to a certain degree, Chen Chaoyang would tear open the wounds again. Fresh wounds were still visible on both corners of his mouth, continuously spilling blood.

"Heh heh, isn’t this my way of showing my admiration for you?" He ruffled his own hair and spoke casually.

"Alright then, have it your way."

"People need some pain to remind themselves of certain things they should not forget." Chen Chaoyang spoke, tearing open the corners of his mouth. His grotesque smile, covered in blood and saliva, made him look like a horrifying monster.

Tang Ye did not respond. He turned around and headed for the stairwell. Chen Chaoyang had become unpredictable. Downstairs, Ah Fu saw Tang Ye was about to leave and tried to join him. Tang Ye, however, waved him off; he wanted to be alone and quickly rid himself of his gloomy mood.

Outside the gates of the Peace Party, survivors wearing tattered clothes lined up one after another, some were even dozing off in exhaustion.

They hadn’t bathed in a long time. The pungent smell of sweat seemed to be the natural scent of the Qinshan Base. The smell was revolting at first, but eventually, people grew accustomed to it.

For some reason, since the establishment of the Peace Party, people considered this area ’taboo’ due to the presence of two Level 6 New Humans. However, as time passed, more and more people began to rest here.

The Peace Party was the only power in Qinshan Base to lay down the rule of no killing on their territory, maintaining a certain level of order. As such, survivors from every corner of Qinshan Base considered this place as a second refuge area, just like the Third Block.

The survivors bore a positive impression of the Peace Party. Here, the Peace Party acted as their guardian angels. No one would dare threaten their lives here.

However, in the eyes of other powers, the Peace Party was the most brutal force. Not long ago, a Level 2 New Human killed a person on a street under the Peace Party’s jurisdiction. Soon after, the Peace Party’s Level 6 New Human, Tang Fu, wiped out the Level 2 New Human, along with his backing force, leaving no survivors.

This incident instilled a sense of security in the hearts of many ordinary people, a feeling they hadn’t felt since the early days of the apocalypse, reminiscent of the soldiers who once protected them.

However, they hadn’t seen soldiers like that since the apocalypse, only vicious ones running rampant!

When the survivors saw Tang Ye come out, they all stood up in respect and admiration. Some even screamed in excitement: "Chairman! I want to join The Peace Party!"

"Me too!"

"Me also! Chairman, look at me! I’m ready to work like an ox or a horse!"

"I want to join The Peace Party! From now on, I am a living member of The Peace Party. Even in death, I’ll belong to The Peace Party!"

"..."

The crowd frantically surged towards Tang Ye. With a frown, he malevolently uttered a single word: "Scram!"

At hearing that word, everyone jumped scared. Chairman Li Henian of The Peace Party was a legendary figure within the Qinshan Base. Every word he spoke carried an unparalleled pressure that compelled people to step aside and open a path for Tang Ye.

Stepping out of the Peace Party controlled street, Tang Ye found it much quieter. He looked up at the sky. It was cloudy, with dark clouds spread across. The sunshine would occasionally peek through the clouds.

He looked towards the north where there were fewer clouds, and the sun shone through the gaps, forming beams that sprawled across the earth. Even though such weather wasn’t ideal for distraction, Tang Ye headed towards the place with the most sunshine.

There were few people on the streets of Qinshan Base. No one would come out just for a leisure stroll. The green strips along the roads before the apocalypse no longer bore any green — all that was left were naked tree branches and yellow leaves. The bark from the trees lining the road had been stripped off by the starving survivors. Occasionally, a few red-feathered birds flew past. Their feathers would fall onto the ground and immediately get snatched away by the survivors.

Tang Ye had tasted the feathers of the red feather birds. They were somewhat sweet. A delightful snack and a favorite among the survivors. However, there were too many survivors and the red feather birds could only provide so much.

Greedy survivors attempted to catch these birds, but strangely, these red-feathered birds didn’t carry any traits of evolved creatures, yet they were speedy. Unless a Level 2 or a higher New Human tried to catch them, no one else had a chance.

Tang Ye didn’t know how long he had been walking or where he was. However, he didn’t see the tall wall that separated the New Humans from the old ones, nor did he see the wall protecting from the Zombies. Still, his irritability had not vanished.

He reached the end of a road. On his left was a dead-end blocked by toppled buildings, not stretching more than ten steps. On the right was an intact building, a decrepit residential tower stood towering over.

There were a handful of survivors aimlessly wandering back and forth. They would glance curiously at Tang Ye, but none of them said anything. Nobody wanted to walk down the dead-end as it wouldn’t serve any purpose and would only waste physical strength.

In other words, few people ever chose to go down the dead-end. Tang Ye initially intended to turn back, but then he noticed a beam of sunshine illuminating the back of the residential tower. Underneath the tower was a small alley.

Tang Ye looked at the bright beam of sunshine and, as if by some obscure force, walked towards it. Then, the dark clouds above slowly dispersed, and another ray of sunshine fell on his body.

He had hoped this ray of sunshine would lift his spirit, but unfortunately, it didn’t. Everything within Qinshan Base seemed dull, without any color, only black and white, rendering a suffocating gray atmosphere. Even the sunshine couldn’t dispel this eerie feeling.

He stood in front of the entrance to the alley, it was long and dark. At the end, however, he spotted a point of light.

That point of light led Tang Ye to walk forward. He kicked aside the randomly strewn garbage and stepped onto the muddy water puddle in the alley with a splash, heading inside. His figure eclipsed the point of light at the end of the alley.
