Chapter 516: Chapter 513: The Scoundrel Who Dislikes Scoundrels_1
"I’m sorry..."
Tang Ye whispered in his heart to Nannan. Even though he didn’t want to let go of Nannan, he was a zombie, not her real father. She needed a society that belonged to her own race.
But Nannan had been calling him father for many years, and there were emotions in his heart that he couldn’t get rid of. This kind of emotion made Tang Ye grateful, and it showed that he still retained something of what it meant to be human.
He desired to become a zombie, with all its aspects, but not its cold-blooded cruelty. He was a zombie, but he had once been a person of flesh and blood!
Just like Xu Haishui, he needed emotions. He didn’t want to be rejected by his former race. Zombies wouldn’t reject him, but he didn’t care. He needed human perspectives, such as that of Ning Yu’er or Nannan...
Letting Nannan go this way made Tang Ye feel like he had abandoned her. He was once abandoned by his own birth parents, yet the reason behind their abandonment remained a mystery.
Perhaps when he finds them, Tang Ye might kill them personally!
This was not cruelty, but a manifestation of the loneliness bestowed in a lifetime that needed someone to bear.
Maybe the brutality distinctive of zombies was affecting his consciousness, but it didn’t matter now, because the zombified heart didn’t feel out of place to him. It even gave Tang Ye a feeling he was originally a zombie.
Why it turned out this way, he didn’t know. But his sudden transformation into a zombie in the rented room remains a mystery as well.
Two days after the black rain fell, he hadn’t drunk a drop of water, suffering only from hunger. Perhaps the tap water contained anti-life substances, but if you were infected with the zombie virus, you would turn into a zombie within an hour. There was no case where it took twenty-four hours for the transformation!
This was also a major mystery. To this day, Tang Ye still didn’t understand why he became a zombie.
The road ahead was thick with trees. Above, verdant leaves, the faint sunlight peeking through the gaps, filled with the breath of life. Yet the flowers and grass on the ground were a dull yellow.
As though frostbitten by the dried blood, it created a stark contrast with the lush greenery above.
Brother Zhang and his group quickly dispatched the zombies lured there by Nannan. But when they saw the head of the Level 1 evolved zombie severed and falling heavily to the ground, Nannan burst into tears.
"Daddy! Daddy, don’t die...weep...they are all bad people, take me home with you...Daddy~"
She stretched her hand towards the fallen zombie, Qiongli hurriedly pulled her hand down and held her tight: "Alright, alright, it’s not your dad, it eats people."
As she said this, Qiongli was nursing the girl and wondering in her heart: "Who on earth is this girl?"
All of this was incredibly strange. The first time they met Nannan, she was surrounded by a group of zombies, and those zombies didn’t attack her. Plus, she actually called a zombie "Daddy?"
The questions in her heart were growing. Suddenly, she remembered the news she received from her husband; it seemed that a small number of people could retain some profound memories from before their infection after turning into a zombie.
Like a zombie controller, it’s because the zombies bear strong feelings for the controller before they were infected. Even after turning into zombies, they can’t let go of these feelings, which forms a kind of master-servant contract-like relationship.
This usually happened among family members. Nannan calling the zombie ’Daddy’ led Qiongli to wonder if her real father had turned into a zombie but still held deep feelings for Nannan, and had not completely lost his sanity.
Qiongli and Bai Xinran tried their best to comfort Nannan, but nothing worked.
After Brother Zhang had dealt with all the zombies, a glint of cold light flashed across his eyes as he looked at Nannan.
"F*ck! Still crying? You damned b*tch, we told you not to bring that burden along. If she attracts more zombies, you’re on your own!"
Brother Zhang’s face twisted with anger, and his heart was also trembling with fear. Along the way, he had observed Nannan and discovered that she wasn’t afraid of zombies!
How bizarre was this? They had encountered two Level 3 zombies on their journey. When they were passing through the city, they were nearly besieged by a horde of zombies. Although they’d managed to escape several times, they would not survive if Nannan suddenly yelled again!
Nannan was only four or five years old. She hadn’t reached the age of understanding. They couldn’t let anything she said or did affect them. Now, the truck was broken, and they had to proceed on foot for the rest of the way.
With these thoughts in mind, Zhang’s gaze towards Nannan became increasingly icy.
"Throw her away, don’t think I won’t do it!"
Zhang spat out these words through gritted teeth. He wouldn’t let his life be jeopardized by others.
This was the apocalypse. To survive, he could discard anything.
Qiongli ignored him and looked towards Tang Ye. But she couldn’t see what Tang Ye was doing, and the rock where he had been sitting had turned into a pile of powder.
"Where is he?"
Qiongli suddenly stood up while still trying to comfort Nannan.
"Ah!" A woman screamed suddenly. Before them, Tang Ye had suddenly appeared, gripping Zhang’s throat and lifting his entire body into the air.
"You..." Zhang hadn’t expected Tang Ye to lash out all of a sudden. He looked flustered at Tang Ye’s murderous gaze and felt a sense of dread.
"She is a bur...burden! She will get us...killed!"
He tried to persuade Tang Ye. He believed Tang Ye, much like himself, would go to any lengths to survive. But he was wrong. Tang Ye had come here because of Nannan!
The girl who he intended to abandon!
Tang Ye didn’t say a word, his bloodthirsty gaze meeting Zhang’s. After a while, he suddenly slammed Zhang’s head. Zhang’s blood and brains flowed out in a mixture of red and white. He died on the spot!
"I’m a jerk, but I also hate jerks." Tang Ye left these dismissive words and casually sat down under a big tree to rest.
This sudden turn of events shocked many people. Zhang, who was alive and kicking just a second ago, was now a corpse!
A mix of emotions surged within their hearts. They suddenly realized just how cruel the apocalypse was. Their lives were not their own, but belonged to those stronger than them. Their lives were utterly worthless. They previously thought these evolved humans wouldn’t kill arbitrarily, but they were wrong.
If they died, their comrades wouldn’t speak out against their killers, because they too wanted to survive. Zhang killed someone before, and now Tang Ye had killed Zhang. Did anyone dare speak a word?
The world became this ruthless. To survive, they had to obey!
Some people were afraid that if they encountered a horde of zombies, Nannan might suddenly shout out. They silently agreed with what Zhang had said. But now they dared not make any move. The benign Qiongli was no longer the one calling the shots, it was that young man!
