Chapter 495: Chapter 492: Weren’t You Able to Run Fast_1

"This is a ruthless age, where human lives are worth less than pigs. People still need to eat, though. I need to eat. The more, the better. Handing out food rations? That’s something only an idiot would do!"

"Oh?"

Tang Ye glanced at Qiongli, then turned back to Brother Zhang, "This can’t be described as stupidity, it should be called kindness. In some ways, I’d rather deal with kind people."

"I feel the same. But she can be kind if she wants, just don’t expect to impose her ideas on me!" Brother Zhang said.

"Hehe." Tang Ye laughed unnaturally, its sound made Brother Zhang’s scalp tingle. He always felt that Tang Ye’s laughter carried a hint of the low growl of the undead.

"So are you a good guy?" Brother Zhang asked again.

"Do I look like one?"

"Then we are on the same path."

He looked at Tang Ye with a smile, apparently very pleased with Tang Ye’s response of "Do I look like one?" And Tang Ye simply responded, "Yes, on the same path!"

Tang Ye emphasized the words "on the same path", as if afraid Brother Zhang didn’t hear clearly. Then, he fished a pack of blue cigarettes from his bag. After tearing open the pack, he tossed one to Brother Zhang, but did not light one for himself.

Upon seeing the cigarette, a glint of greed flashed in Brother Zhang’s eyes, but it was momentarily suppressed. As he prepared to light it, he realized he had no lighter. Just as an embarrassed smile appeared on his face, Tang Ye threw a lighter towards him as if he knew exactly what he was missing.

Lighter’s click

"Whoosh~ sigh~... refreshing!"

The lit end of the cigarette was a treat for Brother Zhang, and even though he did not know the brand, he found sheer pleasure in it. He rotated the cigarette stick to see the name imprinted on it.

Underworld Road!

A chilling wind blew through, causing goosebumps; a cold breeze with an uncomfortable biting sensation.

In the light of the flashlights, people had all put out the food they had in the middle. But even with all the food, it scarcely piled up to the height of a chair. How could it possibly be distributed evenly among all?

"Does anyone else have any food?" Qiongli looked around and asked.

"No more."

"I have none either. You don’t believe me? Look!" The man flipped all his pockets, only to find Qiongli waving her hand dismissively, "I don’t have the authority to starve you all. I will distribute the supplies evenly."

Qiongli paused, wanting to say something more, but no words came out. Bai Xinran seemed to realize something was amiss and asked Qiongli, "Auntie... what about you?"

Qiongli simply smiled, "Auntie is an evolver, I can resist hunger. I will give my share to the kids."

The people hung their heads, not daring to meet Qiongli’s gaze. Compared to her selflessness, what were they?

Tang Ye, however, was watching Qiongli, a faint smile on his face.

"That...then I don’t want mine either. Give it to my younger brothers..."

Bai Xinran suddenly took out several pieces of black bread and some snacks from her pocket. Everyone stunned at first and then anger boiled.

"Hey, we were asked to take out all we had. Why did you hide these?"

"Yeah, we all took ours out. It’s unbelievable that you are hiding so much!"

"Such a selfish creature!"

"..."

Qiongli was also taken aback, Bai Xinran looked at the angry crowd, but said nothing, the crowd prepared to continue their reproach, but then, sobs came from the girl.

"I... didn’t do it on purpose. I just wanted to keep it for my brother. He..."

"Alright, alright, we won’t blame you. If you’re having difficulties, just tell auntie, okay? We will forgive you."

Bai Xinran crawled into Qiongli’s arms, and told her sob story. Turned out the food was from a previous ration. However, the girl only ate a small part of it, storing the rest.

Through her torn uniform pocket, people could see that she had ripped a hole in her pocket. Since there was mesh fabric behind the pocket, the items placed inside did not fall out. That’s how she managed to store so much food.

"What about your brother?" Qiongli looked at the crowd and then asked Bai Xinran.

However, when the girl revealed the truth, there was nothing but silence.

"He...he is already dead. He said people have souls and become ghosts when they die. He would come back to see me,and he said he wanted to eat delicious food when he found me..."

"Okay..."

Qiongli comforted the small girl with a caress, her nose buried in Bai Xinran’s messy hair. Nannan, who was in Qiongli’s arms, reached over and happily tousled Bai Xinran’s hair.

"Should I give it back to you?" Qiongli looked at Bai Xinran’s thin body, feeling a pang of compassion. The poor girl had been eating so little because she wanted to save it all for her dead brother.

"It’s alright, distribute it. I’ve grown up now. There are no ghosts in the world. My brother cannot come back to me. It would be better if everyone can have a share."

Bai Xinran straightened up and wiped away her tears, showing strength in her voice.

At this moment, Tang Ye seemed to sense something and looked back from where they came.

"Hey stop being sappy. If you don’t want to attract any trouble, shut off the flashlights."

Qiongli and the rest did not react promptly but soon understood. After all, there was no point in deceiving themselves given Tang Ye’s strength. They promptly turned off their flashlights and refocused their attention on the highway.

"What is it?" Qiongli asked Tang Ye.

"You will know soon."

He responded indifferently, and Qiongli, after letting out an "oh", stopped talking. She began to look out for the "something" on the highway Tang Ye had mentioned.

...

After two or three minutes, sounds could finally be heard. They had thought it was going to be a powerful undead passing by, but instead, they heard the shouts of a group of people!

The sounds grew closer; eventually, the crowd could see a smoke-emitting minivan emerging at the far end of the highway, followed by a large crowd of motorcyclists.

They cheered raucously like wild monkeys, waving their clubs while some riders fired shots at the minivan with their rifles!

"The Motorcycle Gang!" someone exclaimed, while the faces of the others changed dramatically.

No one knew if the bullets from the Motorcycle Gang hit the driver of the van, but an abrupt braking followed by a 360-degree spin stopped the vehicle.

The car jerked twice, and finally, the door was kicked open from the inside. Shortly after, a sallow-faced, weak looking, middle-aged fat man came out with his hands raised.

"Gentlemen, spare me!"

Once out, he knelt, begging for mercy while the Motorcycle Gang, made what seemed like a hundred boisterous men, their bodies reeking of blood, mostly New Humans, approached menacingly.

"Weren’t you quite a runner?"
