Chapter 493: Chapter 490: It’s Not The Time To Act Impulsively_1
People scattered, revealing a trembling girl in the crowd. Tang Ye frowned at the sight, his eyes filled with a somber chill.
"A bunch of waste!" He spits out before shifting his gaze back to the view outside the window. The corner of his eye, though, noticed Brother Zhang constantly fixing his gaze on the girl.
The uniform the girl was wearing was too big for her, the pockets on both sides visibly bulging. Whether her hands were stuffed inside or something else was unclear.
One thing was certain, apart from the half piece of bread she gave to Tang Ye, she hadn’t eaten the other half. Yet, Tang Ye discarded that thought quickly.
Greed flashed in Brother Zhang’s eyes, his gaze never strayed from the girl’s uniform pockets. Whispers floated from the spectators nearby, quiet but distinct to Tang’s super-sensitive ears.
"This little girl always takes a bite and stores the rest, this has been going on for days! Do you think she has stored a lot in her pocket?"
"Definitely, we ran out of food some time ago, and we don’t have much left now, we ..."
"..."
A wry smile formed on Tang Ye’s face, his mind silently delivering a death sentence to the gossipers.
"I will throw you all into a pile of zombies..."
Probably overhearing some of the conversation, Aunt Qiongli’s brow furrowed. She looked at the girl and beckoned her over, "Bai Xinran, come here."
"Aunt Qiongli."
"Come here, stay by my side."
The girl nodded, standing up and moving to Qiongli’s side. She sat stiffly.
A shade of discontent began to color the faces of those around them, but no one voiced their objections. Every person had a hodgepodge of supplies when they arrived. After a nuclear explosion, they were left with next to nothing. By their calculations, what remained would last for about two days.
Noticing this, they turned their attention towards scavenging, rationing the food they had left as each bite reduced it.
Brother Zhang had clearly anticipated this scene. His eyes flicked back and forth as if scheming, glancing at Tang Ye now and then, observing if he would step in to fight for food.
If he did, Zhang would stand by Tang Ye’s side. A show of solidarity with the strong was a necessary survival skill in the apocalypse. If you can’t beat them, join them!
"Hang on everyone!"
At that moment, the driver yelled. People turned their heads to realize that zombies had suddenly appeared on the road ahead, and the driver was aiming the car straight at them!
Thud!
A heavy thud echoed as the bus hit a zombie, throwing it a good two meters away. Once it landed, it was run over by the bus, its viscera, seeping a black liquid, splattering out, causing onlookers to feel nauseous.
"F**k! Is this really necessary?"
A woman clutching her seven or eight-year-old child berated the driver. Her heavy local dialect indicated she was likely from southern Yunnan. The driver, not comprehending her dialect, cursed back in his own tongue, "Hold your kid tightly!"
With that, the driver, in an expression of frustration, rammed another zombie. The combined black and yellow pus sprayed all over the car windows!
Other zombies in the vicinity staggered towards the bus, but their movements were too slow and clumsy. They had barely started moving before the bus left them in its dust!
Seeing this, the woman was silenced. Nobody else minded much. After all, these zombies were far too slow to catch up. However, they soon realized the consequences of their carelessness!
Just because they encountered fewer zombies now, it didn’t mean evolved zombies did not exist!
Not long after they had moved ahead, a dry, yellow-colored tree unexpectedly split open. A three-meter-long branch, resembling an insect’s appendage, lunged out and struck the roof of the car!
Clink!
The bus swayed. Everyone immediately felt the vehicle sink as the roof caved in and the engine died.
Boom~
The driver attempted to restart the engine a couple of times, but the vehicle wouldn’t come back to life. He slapped the steering wheel in frustration.
"What the f*ck!"
Cursing loudly, the driver was enraged. But someone else was even more incensed by his incompetence. The moment after he finished swearing, Brother Zhang rose and advanced towards him.
"You good-for-nothing!"
"What are you doing?"
Seeing Zhang advancing towards him, the driver shrieked. But it was too late; Zhang had already swung a blade at him. Blood spattered across the window next to the driver, covering the substitute driver’s face. He was petrified!
A collective fear took hold of the spectators. This was the first time they saw Brother Zhang kill someone, and with such brutality!
The driver slumped in his seat like a pile of mud, as Zhang kicked him several times. With a final kick, he sent the steering wheel flying outward. Anyone could tell. This man was in a volatile state!
A swirl of fear and bitterness surfaced on many faces. They knew there was no other way. This was the apocalypse; they weren’t children anymore. They knew there were more brutal realities in the apocalypse. It’s just that they had not witnessed them yet. Moreover, there was a young man in the convoy, who seemed even more brutal than Brother Zhang!
This man seemed like a devil who wouldn’t hesitate to wipe out everyone at the slightest disagreement. Before the Apocalypse, people would have considered him a lunatic, but in the Apocalypse, it’s highly probable he would really do it!
"Aunt Qiongli..."
People looked at Qiongli with pleading eyes. This feeling of not being in control of their own fate was terrible; they could only seek protection from another strong player.
Qiongli dutifully responded, handing Nannan off to Bai Xinran, "Take care of her for me."
"Okay, auntie."
Seeing Bai Xinran agree, Qiongli rose to her feet, pulled out her army dagger, and pointed it at Brother Zhang, "Why did you kill him?"
"Because he was useless!"
"Useless? If you think he’s useless, why don’t you drive? You have no right to take away someone’s life!"
"Hmph, no right, the hell do you have any business with what I do?"
Looking at Tang Ye’s indifferent face, Brother Zhang felt reassured. He believed that Tang Ye, like him, had survived the brutal start of the Apocalypse, and wouldn’t interfere. This made Zhang even more brazen.
"Shrew, don’t think coming out of a shelter makes you noble. People like you only serve the likes of me!"
Qiongli was both embarrassed and angry. The murderous intent in her eyes grew more intense as she glared at Brother Zhang. She had long wanted to teach him a lesson, and now was her chance!
Uttering a curse in a foreign language, Qiongli darted towards Zhang like a shadow. However, the more rational members of the group noticed the incoming horde of zombies and called for everyone to calm down, "Everyone, calm down, this is not the time to lose control!"
Those words brought Qiongli back to her senses. As her anger subsided, she halted her attack on Brother Zhang.
"Beast!"
Swearing at him, she sidestepped Zhang, kicked open the car door, and exited the vehicle. She leapt into combat with the zombie tree and the scattered horde.
