I am the Zombie King of the Apocalyptic World -
Chapter 458 - 455: Exchange Yajin_1
Chapter 458: Chapter 455: Exchange Yajin_1
Someone stepped forward to remind Yan Jie, who seemed lost in thought, that it was time to go, but Tang Ye held him back: "Hold on, he’s probably recalling something. Let him rest."
"Alright."
The person Tang Ye had stopped stepped aside. Tang Ye noticed a flicker of light in Yan Jie’s eyes. When he met Chen Chaoyang and his group again, everyone excluding Li Xiaoyan had changed drastically, almost becoming unrecognizable. Chen Chaoyang had once been a life-loving, Buddha-like youth. The sight of his loud sobbing in the room was heart-wrenching, his cries muffled and frantic, resembling a wild beast that had just broken free from its cage. His once amused smile was now replaced with hatred towards the world.
In his eyes, Tang Ye found no trace of hope that was characteristic of a human.
As for Yan Jie, a seemingly moralistic and slightly chivalrous young man, was the reason Tang Ye didn’t kill him when he discovered that Tang Ye himself was a zombie at the Yindan Base.
Now, Yan Jie’s eyes only reflected indifference, absent of any emotion— even a zombie seemed more emotional than him.
The old selves of these two men were nowhere in sight.
As Yan Jie stood there stupefied, the grip on his blade tightened. After a long time, he finally walked up to Tang Ye and apologized.
Tang Ye only shook his head in response; he didn’t verbalize anything. Li Xiaoyan, who was standing nearby, thought for a moment and then turned to Tang Ye: "Boss, we have no money left for the night. Are we going to sleep on the streets?"
Tang Ye was indifferent. Looking at the survivors sitting by the roadside, he said gravely: "I heard food can be exchanged for money."
"Yes, boss. Do you mean to say..."
"Yes, we will exchange food."
His eyes twinkled, he remembered that Chen Chaoyang and his group had not informed him that the evolution crystals inside the base could be used as currency. He didn’t own a single crystal of his own, but Xu Haishui did.
Xu Haishui was a dissection fanatic, always fiddling around with something in his room everyday. He’d often push out trolleys laden with zombie bodies. According to him, the zombies he dissected came from the evolution zombies. Each time they would leave behind a bunch of evolution crystals. This was also why the Shiwuguan Base would set aside space for zombie breeding.
Xu Haishui came from the hospital. Tang Ye had once suspected that he was a necrophiliac, an idle person day-by-day. In hindsight, it seemed that he had, unintentionally, made another contribution.
On his arrival, he must have brought the evolution crystals he had saved...
Unfortunately, Tang Ye didn’t bring any with him. He had no evolution crystals on him.
"How do you go about exchanging food?"
"0.1 Yajin can be exchanged for 100g of bread. As for meat, sugar, and other nutritious foods, they’re calculated differently."
"That’s all we can exchange? What do they usually eat?"
"Mostly nutritional supplements. They eat nutrition bars made from juice extracted and compressed from non-mutated cockroaches, rats, and other insects. It’s 0.5 Yajin per bar. One bar can sustain an ordinary person for three days without eating."
"Where can we exchange food?"
"You can do it at any relief store."
"Then let’s go."
Because there was no relief store in the Third Block, Tang Ye and his group had to hit the streets. It was already dusk when they came out. The setting sun in the west had left behind a small portion of itself, showering the horizon with a golden hue. It was stunningly beautiful.
When Tang Ye and his group stepped out, they noticed a strange change in the atmosphere. There were fewer people on the street, or rather, fewer ordinary people. The few remaining regular folks walked in groups, holding their blood-stained knives, their eyes filled with vigilance and excitement. It was as though everyone was waiting for a specific time to arrive.
In each group, there was a New Human leading the way, equipped with all kinds of weapons. Due to living in darkness for long, they seemed to give off a strong sense of evil. This eerie aura was much more intense than that of the people in Shiwuguan Base.
When Tang Ye and his group stepped out, they drew the attention of these armed gangs. Their eyes were fixed on the backpacks that the Shiwuguan Base soldiers were carrying.
The bulging bags seemed to hint that there might be something valuable inside.
Many had ill intentions, but quickly suppressed them upon laying eyes on Ah Fu standing at the front.
Naturally, they could tell that within the Shiwuguan Base crowd, everyone revolved around Tang Ye who led the front, while Ah Fu stood tall at over three meters, like a miniature giant. With such a body shape, even a fool in the base could guess that he was a New Human, and at a high level at that!
Who on earth could grow to a height of three meters through a mutation? New Humans with Build’s physique primarily focus on strength and defense, capable of effortlessly smashing a living human into meat paste with one punch!
Ordinary people were merely scared, not having a direct experience of Tang Ye and Ah Fu. New Humans, however, could faintly sense the extraordinary aura from Tang Ye and Ah Fu, and without a second thought, led their own men away, trying to put as much distance from Tang Ye’s group as possible.
The surrounding atmosphere was somewhat depressing; no one spoke. Only the sound of footsteps was heard. It was eerie, sending shivers down one’s spine.
After some time, they arrived at a large relief store. The garish billboard above only bore a red banner that read: "Yunzang All-purpose (Chenghuang Hotel)"
The Chenghuang Hotel was a large survivor force in the Qinshan Base, with six Level 2 New Humans and one Level 3 New Human. It was a significant force capable of confronting Li Songhua.
Tang Ye and his party gradually entered the shop. The décor was not particularly impressive, with bullet holes spotted on the walls, and dust accumulated on the ground. No one seemed to have cleaned up the place, and piles of black mold had begun to spread in the corners of the room.
The shop was neither too large nor too small, with only a few people inside. The shelves were stocked with expired canned hams and instant noodles, among other things. Some anti-inflammatory medicines cost up to fifty Yajin coins.
The shopkeeper, dressed only in a short coat and a pair of khaki shorts that revealed most of his thirty-something body, lay leisurely in a rocking chair. He was engrossed in reading a book titled "I’m Just Getting by in the World", occasionally chuckling in an offbeat way.
Enjoying the spring breezes laced with the scent of summer, the owner seemed completely at ease. However, a corpse on the ground revealed the actual time he lived in. A large revolver was placed on the table. As Tang Ye walked in, the owner instinctively reached for it. At first glance, he seemed annoyed. However, being a New Human, he sensed the auras of Tang Ye and Ah Fu in no time.
His expression swiftly changed.
"What can I assist you with today?"
The owner’s face was filled with respect. Tang Ye ignored him. His eyes moved across the shelves, finally landing on the large revolver on the table next to the owner’s rocking chair.
He walked over there. The owner did not dare to stop him, merely watching as Tang Ye picked up the revolver, checked it out, then pointed it at himself...
