Chapter 437: Chapter 434 A First Smoke_1

A gunshot rang out. A man fell to the ground, blood gushing from his body, silent and unmoving.

They walked down a street where such scenes were all too common. One moment someone was strolling along, the next moment a butcher’s blade descended, heads dropped to the ground, souls sent to the underworld.

Blood and sin mingled together, creating an unbearable sight of filth. The cheerful twittering of the red-feathered birds and the falling of their feathers did not add a touch of desolation Chen Chaoyang so desperately wished for. Instead, they lent an eerie beauty to this dystopian world.

Why is this so?

All along their journey, the quartet saw nothing but oppressive darkness and shades of red. Every so often, they’d see a pile of corpses, as tall as a small hill, being dragged away on carts like so much garbage.

Finally, the four parked their car in front of a bungalow. Chaoyang saw the broken door, his pupils contracted in fear, and he stumbled out of the car, running towards the house.

"Mom!"

He pushed open the door. The inside was in complete disarray. There was no one there. It felt like his soul had been sucked out of him, and he collapsed onto the ground.

"Mom... where did you go? Mom!"

He rummaged frantically through the house, pushing aside all the furniture and scattered objects. But there was no sign of her.

"My mom is gone, my mom is not here! No, I have to find her!"

With a vacant expression, Chen Chaoyang muttered to himself as he walked out of the door. Just as he was about to leave, he was pulled back by Li Xiaoyan.

"Mr. Chen, where are you going?"

"I’m looking for my mother!"

"How are you going to find her? We will be wanted by the authorities soon. We are risking our lives by lingering here."

"I don’t care!"

Affected by the unknown changes, Yan Jie was quite irritable, losing his usual respect for Chaoyang. He reached out and grabbed Chaoyang by the collar.

"Are you done yet? Let’s go! We have to get out of here!"

"I refuse!" Chen Chaoyang roared.

Loli Liang Hanyang sat in the car, looking at Chen Chaoyang’s demeanor, couldn’t help but pout, "If you want to stay here, then stay by yourself. Seeing what you look like now, you would be serving yourself up for death! If you don’t want to die, then follow us."

Hearing Liang Hanyang’s words, Chen Chaoyang exploded, glaring at her with bloodshot eyes, he bellowed:

"Who do you think you are?"

At those words, Liang Hanyang’s eyes turned cold, a stunning murderous intent flashed out, and in a shot, her small figure vanished from the car.

Swipe!

Yan Jie’s knife was drawn out, and under his astonished gaze, Liang Hanyang’s small hand held the knife aloft. With a flashing cold light, and a powerful surge of energy, Chen Chaoyang was rendered speechless.

He watched as cold light plunged into his arm. His mind couldn’t keep up with what was happening to his body, and before he knew it, his arm fell off seamlessly.

"This..."

Seeing Liang Hanyang raising her hand to strike again, Yan Jie wanted to intervene, but couldn’t get his act together...

She wielded her Zombified Slayer blade once more, casting a cold light. With a squelching sound, Chen Chaoyang’s mouth was slit open, extending all the way to his ear. His blood, thick as sesame paste, dripped down incessantly.

"I’ll spare your life this time, better keep your foul mouth shut in the future. If you do it again, I won’t hesitate to turn you into a minced meat pie."

Clang.

Liang Hanyang tossed the Slayer blade to the ground, hugged her rag doll tightly, and got back into the car.

Chen Chaoyang stood there, dumbfounded. He had never known who this Lolita really was. He had assumed she was just an ordinary child, harmless, and had not paid much attention to her. But now, she had exhibited a power, a power that seemed to surpass his by several levels.

She could kill him as easily as stepping on an ant!

How could Chen Chaoyang, who had never seen a Level 4 New Human, not be stunned?

After a while, Chaoyang came back to his senses. He didn’t say anything. Under Li Xiaoyan’s persuasion, he got back into the car. The way he looked at Loli was now filled with deep fear.

Who exactly was she?

He didn’t know if he should continue searching for his mother. If he didn’t, he would have to leave Qinshan Base with Yan Jie and head for Hua City to become a scavenger. With their group’s strength, they had the potential to dominate in the city!

But if he wanted to find her, where could he begin? The search would require time, and he wasn’t sure if Li Songhua would give them that time. The likely outcome would be death for them all... well, all except for Loli, he and Yan Jie would end up dead!

That was because their opponent was a Level 5 New Human who could bust through all the forces of Qinshan Base, from the eastern edge to the western edge, to escape as long as she wasn’t stupid.

As their vehicle passed a wall, Chaoyang saw a wanted poster. The person wanted was none other than Loli, and her rank was a never-before-seen Double S!

Incredibly, unlike previous wanted posters that gave no reason for the wanted status, this one had a brief description of what the seemingly harmless Loli had done. The words were a bit small, and Chaoyang couldn’t make them out from where he stood.

The pain of a severed arm and the torn mouth brought a sense of much-needed reality to him. He stopped clinging to the hope of finding his mother, though he nurtured a small hope in his heart.

His mother should still be alive.

This hope supported him, but soon, it was crushed under the weight of a shocking revelation.

It was likely that their escape had been noticed by the higher-ups of Qinshan Base. After driving a while, they came across a checkpoint, manned by soldiers checking passers-by.

As before, there were mountains of corpses nearby. From the building next to the checkpoint, cartload of women’s bodies were continually conveyed out.

They didn’t know the purpose of the checkpoint. Out of necessity, apart from Loli Liang Hanyang, the three men had to get down and discuss their strategy. Li Xiaoyan glanced at Liang Hanyang several times, his eyes full of pleading, hoping she could help.

"Um... clever and cute princess, can you... help us this... one time?"

"Forget about it."

"Why, you’re coming with us, right? Now we can’t leave... it’s not fair."

"Hmm, I don’t care. Where I go doesn’t matter to me."

Loli’s eyes twinkled as she looked at the red birds in the sky, an inscrutable expression on her face.

She didn’t care about the identities or lives of Chen Chaoyang and the others. What she wanted was someone who could take care of her. That person wouldn’t need her protection because she was not... herself.

"Alright then."

The three men had no solutions for a while and could do nothing but wait near the checkpoint, watching helplessly. Li Xiaoyan lit a cigarette, passed it to Yan Jie, hesitated looking at Chen Chaoyang, then offered him one as well.

"Mr. Chen, do you want one?"

Chen Chaoyang stared at the cigarette for a moment before taking it. Trembling, he lit it up, took a drag, and the spicy smoke irritated his throat so much that he couldn’t help coughing.
