Chapter 289: Chapter 287: The fleeting shadow_1

The head soaking in the water was faced up, eyes bulging, eyelids retracted, looking dreadfully eerie. The flesh on the cheeks ballooned grotesquely, and the black veins were like serpents embedded in the skin.

With a tilt of his head, Tang Ye reached out a hand to grab the hair of the head, intending to lift it up. However, as soon as he exerted a bit of force, there was a hissing sound. The scalp was easily ripped off by Tang Ye, and blood mixed with a white, unidentified substance began to drip gradually into the nauseating pool of water in the sink.

Tang Ye was at a loss. The head had soaked in the water for too long, the skin and flesh had loosened, falling apart at the slightest touch. Seeing that, he had no choice but to grab it with his hand.

As his fingers dug into the face of the head, Tang Ye lifted it up. And after twisting it around in his hand, Tang Ye saw a hole blasted open in the back of its skull. It was hollow within, clearly the blackened and shriveled brainstem had dissolved into a sludgy state from the soaking.

Upon deducing that this was a head zombie at the evolutionary stage, Tang Ye didn’t immediately set the head down but put in some thought.

With an unclear thought passing through his mind, a bizarre smile crept across Tang Ye’s face.

"Heh, seems like we’re making progress, a game of cat and mouse. I like it. ’Hehe’, just hope you won’t disappoint me, hahaha."

After a few creepy chuckles, Tang Ye intentionally threw the head out of the window. The head hit the ground, instantly causing the bloated meat to flatten out and discharge a blackish-yellow fluid.

As for the disgusting head, Tang Ye felt nothing at all. It was justified to him, just like eating and sleeping for humans - nothing felt out of place. However, even so, Tang Ye found himself being overly afraid of cockroaches. Oops, no, he should say that he’s unfond of cockroaches, repulsed by the way they looked!

As for this peculiar trait of his, Tang Ye didn’t know how to explain. Nonetheless, he attributed it all to him being a zombie.

The difference in physiological structures could result in different perspectives on matters.

The previous zombie left the infirmary in a stagger after seeing Tang Ye occupy its "food". It didn’t dare to challenge Tang Ye, and Ah Fu outside didn’t make an effort to stop it, either.

"Let’s go!"

Stepping out of the sick bay, Tang Ye spoke in Mandarin towards Ah Fu. Although Ah Fu knew what he meant, it followed Tang Ye upstairs to the third floor.

The conditions on the third floor were not much different from the first and second floors, the only distinction was fewer dead bodies and no dreadful scenes similar to the lower floors.

Worms the size of nuts crawled on the floor, covered in blood. Tang Ye knew instantly that these were the parasitizing worms that could turn humans into zombies!

Ignoring these creatures, Tang Ye randomly chose a direction to head to, while Ah Fu was summoned by him to another direction.

On the third floor, it seemed like Tang Ye had discovered something. At the end of the hallway directly ahead, he noticed that the floor in front of the door at the very end was particularly clean, but only that one!

The entrance to each of the other rooms was covered in blood stains, obscuring the original color. Here, however, not only was the floor free of bloodstains, but it was also devoid of dust. The tiled floor was extremely clean, and even the walls were spotless white.

The blood on the neighboring side didn’t cross onto this side. As if divided by an imaginary straight line, it appeared as though someone had been cleaning this specific area regularly!

Upon reaching the door, a strange smile still lingered on Tang Ye’s face, hidden behind the mask. He glanced at his hand that was smeared with the yellowish pus from the head. Without a second thought, he wiped it on the clean wall, as if purposefully ruining someone’s hard work.

Surveying their surroundings and finding nothing out of place, Tang Ye felt a ripple of annoyance. He held his bloody blade upside down, pointed straight at the door, and gave it a fierce kick!

Bang!

The infirmary door was stuck with his sharp blade, creating a big hole and flinging wide open before hitting the wall behind, creating a dull booming sound.

Entering the room, Tang Ye took in the settings. The infirmary was tiny, or rather, a single-patient room. The furniture placement was also quite simple, a bed, a study desk, a chair, and a closet beside the door.

The books and various pens on the study desk were neatly arranged, ordered, and methodical. The quilt on the bed was folded neatly, and the air carried a faint whiff of women’s perfume.

Apparently, the owner of this place had meticulous habits.

To the left of the entrance was a window. Although the window was closed, the curtains were drawn back, letting in bright sunlight. This lent the room an air of serenity.

At the sight of this room, one could momentarily forget that they were still in an apocalyptic world. Once the door was opened, the inside and outside turned into two different worlds!

"Is anyone there?"

Strangely, Tang Ye muttered those words, feeling somewhat disappointed, but he didn’t know what was there to be disappointed about.

He exited, gently closing the door behind him. He looked at the wall that he had purposefully tarnished, and couldn’t help but feel a surge of anger within, an urge to vandalize.

Meanwhile, in the other direction, Ah Fu, who didn’t seem clear about what he was supposed to do, let out a roar, followed by a tremendous crash. The sound of metal plates smashing onto the ground echoed successively!

Tang Ye’s gaze hardened, and he dashed toward Ah Fu’s direction like an arrow.

Roar!

Ah Fu stood up, its giant form making the passage look crowed. Even standing meant it had to bend its waist since its huge head banged forcefully against the ceiling.

With that collision, rather than bringing any harm to Ah Fu, it instead created a gaping hole in the roof!

A few thick, black tentacles sprouted out from its head, worming their way through the gap and lunging at the wall beside!

Each movement of its massive body sent out loud reverberations!

Tang Ye didn’t know what Ah Fu was up to, but he ran toward it to check.

By the time Tang Ye arrived behind Ah Fu, its extended tentacles had already torn a wall apart. It roared ferociously and slipped into the new space!

Tang Ye followed suit, and when he stepped in after Ah Fu, he found the place void of anything. He glanced at Ah Fu who was left dumbfounded, clueless about what had happened.

"What happened?"

Tang Ye sent a message into its mind, and received the muddled and sluggish reply from Ah Fu soon after.

"Saw... something came in."

Getting Ah Fu’s response, Tang Ye nodded, and began inspecting everything around him. However, nothing seemed out of ordinary.

"Let’s get out first."

As he spoke, Tang Ye exited, clutching his bloody blade. But he felt something was off.

Suddenly, he caught a glimpse of a shadow flickering from the corner of his eye, ghost-like. Tang Ye quickly reacted and dashed following the shadow.

Ah Fu, hampered by the corridor, clumsily stumbled behind!

"Die!" A chilling voice echoed from Tang Ye’s mouth. In just a heartbeat, Tang Ye caught up with the shadow.
