Chapter 231 - 229: The Wife’s Cut_1
Chapter 231: Chapter 229: The Wife’s Cut_1
In the deep night sky, ghost-like shadows flitted about, left and right. Occasionally a few would sap down to the ground, hanging until they flew back into the sky. The sight of these creatures was enough to make people hold their breath, for fear they would suddenly head their way.
The man tightly scrunched his body. Every night had been like this up until now, but tonight was different. A visitor had arrived, wearing a mask. He had no idea why Tang Ye would wear one, but he dared not ask him to take it off.
Furthermore, Tang Ye appeared unaware of the terror of these ghostly creatures and spoke with such a loud voice.
Compared to his fear, Tang Ye seemed rather relaxed. What the man didn’t notice was that even though those flying mini-zombies looked terrifying, none of them approached the low-rise building they were in.
The sharp, incessant shrieking continued. These zombies seemed to have sensed something unusual here. None of the survivors below could hear the fear mixed with their cries. They were scared of something.
But they were unwilling to give up on the prey here.
Listening to Tang Ye’s hoarse but confident words, the man had no trust. He still asked cautiously, "Why?"
"No particular reason. They just won’t come. You can rest assured, but it’s best if you don’t go outside."
Tang Ye’s voice remained just as loud, showing no signs of restraint, yet outside, the shadows in the sky had not approached, just as Tang Ye had said. Surprise flashed in the man’s eyes, but he didn’t say much.
Today was a bit unusual. Looking at Tang Ye’s tall and sturdy physique, the man knew that Tang Ye was no ordinary person. Perhaps the zombies were keeping their distance because of him, but he preferred to think it was due to the good soundproofing of the house.
He wasn’t clear about these things, but he had never spoken loudly at night before in case those zombies outside could hear.
If the soundproofing effect was good, why could he hear the sharp cries of the zombies? Could it be that sound didn’t travel both ways?
In the past, if the survivors talked loudly, they’d certainly be heard by those creatures above, and then they would become their prey!
"I have nothing left to eat. Brother, I hope you can bear with it. Once tonight is over, you can find somewhere else to stay."
The man said dejectedly, an embarrassed smile on his face. His sunken cheeks made his face appear even more desolate in Tang Ye’s eyes.
He didn’t have the means to serve a guest suitable food, besides, he’d been hungry for several days. He’d only let Tang Ye in because he didn’t want to see this newcomer fool die on his first day here.
Despite everything, his heart hadn’t been completely consumed by the darkness of the post-apocalypse world.
Tang Ye remained unmoved, as if he hadn’t heard the man. The man stood up awkwardly and limped over to a nearby cabinet with his crutch, taking out some metal materials from within and started to fiddle with it in front of Tang Ye.
The man’s two legs were uneven in length; while his left foot was normal, his right foot was amputated, the foot was missing, to be precise. He was wearing a pair of brown shorts, and the absence of the right foot was clearly visible from Tang Ye’s perspective.
The empty ankle had scars and traces of new wounds. It appeared he’d lost his foot after the Apocalypse.
As the man disassembled the metal in his hand, Tang Ye had no clue what he was doing. He didn’t understand.
"What happened to your foot?"
After a while, Tang Ye’s voice sounded. The man suddenly stiffened upon hearing it, then he looked at Tang Ye’s masked face and offered a good-natured smile.
His hands moved quickly, disassembling another piece, pulling out the wires inside, and then seemingly at a loss as to what to do next.
A hint of response crossed his face; mixed with pain, recollections flashed in his mind, and under Tang Ye’s gaze, he started to speak.
"Ah, this foot...it was chopped off by my wife."
"Your wife?"
A look of bafflement crossed Tang Ye’s face. He wondered: Could it have been some cuckoldry involved?
Though he thought as such, Tang Ye kept his expression composed as he listened to the man’s story of how his foot had ended up that way.
Time rolled back to one hour before the start of the Apocalypse.
Zhou Ranjun had just finished work and was recording the scene of a black rain falling outside the window with his mobile phone, while his wife was preparing dinner.
The dinner wasn’t extravagant, but to Zhou Ranjun, it felt incredibly warm. He’d been newly wedded, still in that intimate phase of dating each other. Having someone cook meals for him felt like the absolute pinnacle of happiness.
His wife, although not a national beauty, was a delicate beauty of the home. He adored his wife to the extent that he’d feel extremely uncomfortable if he couldn’t see her for a day.
They’d nearly run out of groceries at home, and his wife intended to buy more after the meal. However, after the black rain came, they couldn’t go out.
Black rain had drenched every corner of the world, transforming it into a hell populated by bloodthirsty zombies!
Zhou Ranjun and his wife had witnessed countless bloody scenes from their home. How could they dare to step outside?
After hiding at home for a day, the government released a message. But instead of a message of rescue, it was a warning to survivors not to kill zombies at will!
If a zombie was killed, once the crisis was over, the killer would be charged with murder!
The government officials purportedly believed that zombies could be cured and could be transformed back into humans!
When they heard the government’s announcement, Zhou Ranjun and his wife sighed in relief. They also had confidence in their country and believed that they’d overcome this crisis!
With this mindset, they waited at home: one day, two days, three... But by the fourth day, Zhou Ranjun and his wife couldn’t wait any longer. They had no food and couldn’t survive for much longer!
In the face of survival, Zhou Ranjun mustered unprecedented courage and decided to go out in search of food!
After making up their minds, the couple prepared to leave the house. However, as soon as they opened the door, they encountered their first zombie in the hallway!
The zombie, roaring and waving its hideous head, charged towards them. Zhou Ranjun, armed with a weapon, was immediately terrified upon seeing it. His courage evaporated the moment he came face to face with the zombie.
They were scared of the zombie and also scared of the law!
They didn’t dare to fight the zombie, nor did they dare to kill it!
If bitten by a zombie, the end would be no different from death, but killing a zombie could lead to legal repercussions!
How could Zhou Ranjun possibly fight?
So, he shrank back and returned home with his wife, but the zombie chased them all the way!
A zombie’s craving for flesh and blood was beyond typical humans’ comprehension. For food, zombies could move faster than normal humans!
Zhou Ranjun made it back to their front door, but since they’d locked it before they left—a habitual act of his wife—it took time to unlock it again.
His wife managed to get inside unharmed, but Zhou Ranjun was a step too late and was tackled by the zombie, grabbed around his foot...
