Chapter 224: Chapter 222 Incomprehensible Thoughts_1
"You killed... Henian..."
Li Qingtian looked at Tang Ye holding the Evolution Crystal Pocket with lifeless eyes, unable to detect any emotions.
"You killed others, I killed you, what’s wrong with this? Eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, right?"
Tang Ye approached her, poised his mask-covered face close to hers and said word for word in his harsh voice.
"An eye for an eye, huh... But... I clearly didn’t want to kill them, I was just trying to stop them, and they still wanted to... I’ve met too many people like that... Is it really wrong that I killed them?"
Through the mask, Li Qingtian looked into his black pupils behind the mask.
There was a visible fluctuation in Tang Ye’s gaze. He tilted his head, seemingly feeling uncomfortable. He stood up quickly, looking at the corpse of Li Henian and then at Li Qingtian sitting on the ground.
Li Qingtian, noticing Tang Ye’s irregularity, stared back at him and continued to ask, "Am I really wrong?"
Tang Ye didn’t know how to answer. He could roughly guess what had happened. This brother and sister didn’t seem to be good people, but were all survivors good people?
Along the way, the incidents he saw at the survivor’s assembly at Honglin High School, Nannan who was almost eaten by her grandparents, and the girl who was brutally tortured left him with the realization — not everyone was inherently good.
Perhaps both right and wrong were common in the apocalypse. It might be for self-preservation, but the fault didn’t lie in these individuals, but rather the world itself. Perhaps these people shouldn’t speak up, or maybe everyone in this world deserved to die!
"Am I really wrong? Shouldn’t I have killed them? Was it wrong? Can you tell me if I was in the wrong?"
Li Qingtian muttered to herself. Tang Ye felt a pang of guilt in his heart, but it quickly vanished. Guilty? What did he have to feel guilty for?
What’s done was done. Surely no one could arrest him, right?
Feeling off, Tang Ye’s guilt disappeared in an instant, replaced by ferocity. In his eyes, this woman was like meat on a chopping board; he could manipulate her as he pleased. When did it become her turn to question him?
Tang Ye could easily say, "If I say you’re wrong, then you’re wrong!"
With these thoughts in his head, he glowered and thrust his hand out towards her. Grabbing her by the collar, he yanked her up without a care for delicacy.
She had no strength to resist. As Tang Ye suddenly hoisted her up, she laughed. It was a soft and beautiful laugh which only frustrated Tang Ye more.
A cold aura emanated from him, his killing intent was almost tangible, all directed towards Li Qingtian.
"What do you want to do? My brother is dead because of you. He was my only family. Now that he’s dead, what more do you want? Kill me? Or... this?"
As Tang Ye held her, she ignored the suffocating feeling in her throat. She tugged at her waistband, ripping it open, revealing her fair, delicate skin. But Tang Ye wasn’t interested. His cold eyes remained fixated on her.
But he didn’t immediately kill this woman.
A feeling of absurdity emerged in Tang Ye’s heart. Especially when he saw no fear in her eyes, he was taken aback.
He had never seen such a look. What kind of expression was that? Deathly stillness? Despair? And was there subtle hatred?
He didn’t know how to describe that look. It was as if it was the second before brightness disappeared, or the instant before an explosion. Was it shock?
He resented this kind of look, that fearless look. It reminded him of that warrant officer he encountered in the Lin City safe zone - Yang Hong!
While these people were deserving of respect, they were his enemies, and hence, they were objects of his hatred!
To Tang Ye, the best way to secure revenge on a person was firstly to destroy his heart, and then watch his life slowly fade away in despair!
Just like the saying, it’s not the death that is terrifying but the process of waiting for it!
He turned his head left and right, the cracking noise from his joints rang out. But his eyes never left Li Qingtian’s gaze.
After a while, Tang Ye released her. As her feet touched the ground, she let out a hum. Ignoring Tang Ye’s presence, she struggled to get up and walked towards Li Henian, picked up his body and cradled it in her arms.
Li Henian’s zombie corpse stared blankly with colourless eyes. Death didn’t seem to have closed his eyes.
Gazing blankly at Li Henian’s colourless eyes, tears started sliding down her cheeks. At first, she shed silent tears. Later, she broke down and sobbed, holding Li Henian’s upper body tightly.
"Brother, I’m sorry. It’s my fault, I’m really sorry... sob..."
"Brother is in heaven now. Make sure to listen to our parents, don’t throw tantrums, they will buy you Transformers... sob... I’m sorry, brother, do you like eating me? Come..."
Her cries were miserable. She reminisced about her past with Li Henian. In the end, she put her finger in his mouth. However, he was already dead, so his mouth stayed wide open, unable to bite down.
Tang Ye watched from the side in silence, the scene could move anyone to tears. However, he remained emotionless. At first, he didn’t feel anything. But after a while, he seemed to realize the severity of the matter.
"It seems... I really don’t feel anything anymore."
This cold side of him made him feel alienated, as if he were a robot. He couldn’t understand why Li Qingtian was behaving like this. When a person died, they were dead. There was no use mourning. Would her words bring him back?
Obviously, that was impossible. Her sobs in front of Tang Ye made him want to laugh, though he held it back.
His understanding was deviating far from the human path. This seemed normal but also odd.
His thought process reminded him of a quote by a master before the apocalypse, "If everyone is good but I am evil, I am the evil one. But if everyone is evil and only I am good, who is then evil?"
The concept was simple. Tang Ye was in this situation now. His thinking had surpassed human comprehension, and likewise, he couldn’t fully understand human thinking either. These seemingly meaningless actions made no sense to him, yet that was a defining feature of humans!
What made humans human were indeed their emotions! But Tang Ye no longer had any, which meant he couldn’t blend into the human community even as a zombie.
Even though he wasn’t keen on fitting in, this fixed outcome made him feel somewhat upset.
Li Qingtian’s cries were soft. She held tightly onto Li Henian’s corpse and refused to move. Tang Ye didn’t leave either. The girl was still useful, so he decided to wait for her to finish crying.
