Chapter 21: Chapter 21 Tang Ye’s gun got stolen_1
Tang Ye was a person who was rather superstitious, somewhat interested in dream interpretation. When he woke up that morning, he found himself mulling over the strange dream he’d had, trying to figure out its symbolism.
The atmosphere in the dream was so oppressive. Tang Ye strained to remember what he’d lost in it that had caused him such heart-wrenching grief?
"What significant could I have lost?" He chuckled mockingly at himself. He was alone in the world now, not to mention a feared zombie. Maybe he had an adopted sister, Chu Yunxuan, but even before the post-apocalyptic outbreak, they had been drifting apart. Now, whether he lived or died probably meant nothing to her.
Tang Ye set aside the gun he had been carrying behind him, looking ahead at an autumnal poplar tree. Countless zombies aimlessly wandered about, while Zheng Minghui, up on the building, stared in fascination at the rifle Tang Ye had just put down.
"No, I need to figure something out!" Zheng Minghui murmured to himself, wracking his brain for a way to get his hands on the rifle. His eyes scanned his surroundings, quickly settling on a tangled fishing line in a mop bucket at the end of the hallway.
With his heart beating faster, he now had a plan! Stealthily, he headed over and picked up the fishing line, guessing that it must have belonged to an angler before the apocalypse. The line was there, but there was no fishing rod. The hook at the end was even rusted, suggesting it had been abandoned for quite a while.
Zheng Minghui unwound the knotted fishing line and tied a long section of it to the handle of a mop. Returning to his previous position, he estimated the distance between himself and Tang Ye’s rifle.
"It should reach!"
Zheng Minghui assured himself, grateful for his vantage point on the second floor, which put him not too far above the rifle. The fishing line looked long enough to hook it.
With the rusty hook in hand, he made an admittedly amateurish cast. The hook dangled just above an unsuspecting Tang Ye. His heart pounding, Zheng Minghui gently tugged the line, relocating the hook above the rifle.
Zheng Minghui lowered the fishing line, his heart pounding as the hook made contact with the rifle. He could barely contain his excitement, his body trembling involuntarily!
"Hook it! Hook it! Come on!"
He mentally urged, adjusting the location of the hook to snag the rifle’s trigger.
"Got it! Got it! Yes! Finally got it! Hahaha!"
Witnessing the hook latch onto the rifle’s trigger hole, Zheng Minghui was filled with euphoria! He carefully reeled in the fishing line and let out a sigh of relief as he saw the rifle securely suspended in mid-air.
As Tang Ye prepared to leave, he reached behind him for the rifle, only to feel thin air. Assuming the gun had fallen to the ground, he turned around, only to see that his rifle was missing. Looking up, he saw someone retracting a line with his rifle attached to it!
"Son of a ****!" Tang Ye cursed in his head, feeling his dignity as a zombie offended! Since becoming a zombie, he had never seen anyone so bold as to steal from a zombie!
Tang Ye’s rage flared instantaneously, and he lunged towards the damn thief!
Realizing the urgency of the situation, Zheng Minghui hurriedly reeled in the fishing line, desperate to grab the rifle. The entrance to the stairs was carelessly barricaded with pieces of furniture such as couches and chairs, leaving gaps wide enough for someone to pass through!
Meanwhile, Tang Ye sprinted to the stairs. The furniture blocking the entrance might have frustrated an ordinary zombie, but it was no match for a zombie with human intelligence.
He dived under the piles, clearing the barricade in an instant. Once Zheng Minghui had the rifle in hand, he made a run for the plank leading to another building!
Tang Ye reached the second floor just in time to see his silhouette. His white pupils glinted ominously!
Daring to steal his stuff... someone clearly had a death wish!
With a surge of adrenaline, Tang Ye charged after Zheng Minghui!
Zheng Minghui scrambled onto the plank, his ears picking up on the sound of footsteps growing louder from behind. In a panic, he twisted his torso around and aimed the rifle at Tang Ye and pulled the trigger!
Taken off guard, Tang Ye swiftly dodged into a room nearby.
Clack!
Confused, Zheng Minghui realized the rifle hadn’t fired.
The sharp-eared Tang Ye noted the sound and metaphorically kicked himself.
"This jerk must be handling a gun for the first time. I had the safety off! What was he afraid of?" Infuriated, Tang Ye came out of hiding and continued the chase.
Zheng Minghui was also thrown off. He couldn’t understand why the rifle wouldn’t fire. He began to suspect the gun was a fake, but its substantial weight begged to differ. Without losing a second, he turned back around and bolted for the other end of the plank!
Tang Ye too rushed for the plank, hoisted himself up onto it in a few quick steps. Seeing this, Zheng Minghui grew frantic and swung the gun stock towards Tang Ye’s head. In an unexpected move, Tang Ye dodged.
Realizing it was useless to grapple with him, Zheng Minghui sprang backwards off the plank. Resorting to desperate measures, he gripped the plank with both hands, intending to push it away. He couldn’t risk letting Tang Ye cross — that would be his downfall!
Tang Ye felt the plank wobble, and tried to jump off quickly, but Zheng Minghui was one step ahead. With a mighty push, he dislodged the plank from the railing on one side. Tang Ye lost his footing and plummeted down with the plank!
"Die, you! Still want to bite me?" Zheng Minghui sneered derisively, leaning over to get a look at where Tang Ye had fallen.
Thud!
Tang Ye hit the ground, his fall not causing him any physical pain, but the humiliation sparked a primal, wrathful roar!
Aaarrr!
With that furious roar, he drew other zombies towards him. Anyone would be livid in his situation. Energized, Tang Ye scrambled to his feet and dashed towards the entrance stairs of the building.
Seeing the incoming wave of zombies, Zheng Minghui clutched the rifle and sprinted upstairs!
Tang Ye ascended the building again, his menacing expression concealing his intention to hunt him down!
"You better not let me find you! I swear I’ll kill you if I do or my name’s not Tang! ****!"
Tang Ye’s rage was now fully ablaze, as he vowed to put an end to the one who stole his rifle. In that moment, considerations of humanity or any sort of decency evaporated! Zombies were simply quick-tempered that way!
Tang Ye took out a crowbar, searching every room on the second floor, overstrewing everything in his path, but Zheng Minghui was nowhere to be seen. This seemed rather odd to him.
Could he have run upstairs?
Tang Ye decided to ascend further, combing through every room on every floor. But there was no sign of him anywhere!
Tang Ye came back down to the second floor, reminiscing about what just happened made him feel like he was being toyed with like a Tom cat by a Jerry mouse. The more he thought about it, the angrier he got, leading him to conduct another thorough search of the building with a burning sense of indignation, but yet again, there was no trace of Zheng Minghui!
"Fine then, just don’t let me see you again!"
