Chapter 19: Killing Intent_1

Chapter 19: Chapter 19: Killing Intent_1

Old Liu walked up to the door, bent down, preparing to listen for any sound from outside. To be honest, it took a great deal of effort for him to crawl here through the ventilation duct. He wasn’t willing to leave empty-handed!

"What are you doing? Don’t open the door! Otherwise, we’ll both die!" Zheng Minghui saw Old Liu’s movement and thought he was going to open the door, so he urgently warned him.

Old Liu knew what was bothering Zheng, he waved to reassure him, and then...

Click!

He opened the door, peered outside, it was eerily quiet, so quiet it was frightening. If it were not for the dried, blackened bloodstains on the ground, one would never guess that a horrifying world lay outside, where a bloody slaughter had just taken place.

It seemed safe for now, Old Liu wanted to grab some food and go. He waved to Zheng, who was too scared to make a move. Zheng’s plan was to hide as long as he could – to survive as long as possible! Naturally, he dared not head out.

Old Liu shook his head silently, knowing he had to go by himself, he carefully walked out with a knife in hand aiming for the shelves ahead lined with sauces and other condiments. None of those items were of use to him, he was looking for ready-to-eat foods.

He kept walking ahead, not far off were piles of candy sold by weight - sweet foods could provide a substantial amount of calories. If he could bag a small portion and bring it home, he might be able to live a little longer, perhaps even long enough for potential rescue.

He glanced around casually, seeing that the other zombies were far away, he felt at ease and strode over. He tore open a bag and began stuffing it with chocolate and marshmallow candies.

After filling a bag, his greed urged him to fill another. He set the full bag on the ground, and as he reached out to grab another bag, he saw a small figure out of the corner of his eye. He jerked his head up in alarm.

"Damn it! Run!" As Old Liu saw the true face of the figure, he shrank back, his heart pounding. He quickly grabbed the bag full of food and turned to flee!

And the dwarf zombie, who had just spotted Old Liu, gave a roar and took off after him at a rapid pace!

Roar!

While Old Liu was out, Zheng stood at the door watching him. He couldn’t see what was happening, which made him a bit restless; he couldn’t resist the desire to step out and grab some food as well. In no time, he noticed Old Liu’s figure suddenly reappearing in his field of vision.

At first glance, Zheng was immediately attracted to the contents of the bag in Old Liu’s hand.

"Wow, food, it looks like food!" Zheng’s face lit up with joy, now he had faith in his own chances of survival! But still confused, he looked at the rushing figure of Old Liu.

"What’s the rush? Seriously!" he mocked Old Liu as he rushed by, but Old Liu didn’t even respond, he was just running as fast as he could!

The dwarf zombie rapidly closed the distance between them, and Zheng saw it charging not far behind Old Liu. The joy on Zheng’s face vanished instantly, and fear swept over him. He wanted to shut the door immediately, indifferent to Old Liu’s life or death, but then he saw the bag filled with food, and hesitated.

Thankfully, Old Liu wasn’t far from the office, and there was still a considerable distance between the dwarf zombie and him. Zheng clenched his teeth and waited for Old Liu, who did not disappoint, he rushed straight into the office.

"Shut the door! Shut the door now, hah...puff...puff..."

Bang!

Zheng Minghui slammed the door shut right behind him. Both men breathed a sigh of relief.

Thunk!

A sound echoed as something hit the door, making both men tense again. Zheng quickly locked the door and turned to Old Liu, shouting angrily, "How could you lead it here? Are you trying to get us killed?"

"How was I supposed to know it was there? I didn’t see it at first!" Old Liu retorted discontentedly.

Thunk! Thunk! Thunk!

The sound of bashing against the door persisted. However, the quality of this office door was quite good, standing firm against each strike! This finally eased their minds.

They both opened their mouths, ready to continue their argument, but the next second, the dwarf zombie seemed to stop bashing the door, only for a moment, before a thick, white bone spike suddenly pierced the sturdy door, making both men jump in surprise. Old Liu shouted immediately, "Quick, escape through the vent!"

He pointed to the ceiling, preparing to move the office table underneath so he could climb up.

Swish! Swish! Swish!

The bone spike continued to create holes throughout the door, spooking Zheng; the door would not survive for much longer under such assault!

"Let’s go!" Old Liu shouted and, using the office table, climbed up to the ventilation duct; Zheng followed him.

Bang!

The lock on the office door was smashed and the dwarf zombie broke in only to find an empty room. After a moment of standing still, it left the room.

Zheng and Old Liu were crawling forward in the ventilation duct. The path widened later on, allowing them both to stand and walk. Old Liu looked coldly at Zheng, he really didn’t want Zheng following him. Where would he be going after leaving the ventilation duct? Of course, to his place of refuge, and he didn’t feel like sharing his food with Zheng. Although two people surviving together could be safer, Zheng was simply too timid, as evidenced by his earlier behavior. Old Liu held him in contempt.

"Just wait till we get out. I’m going to kill you," Old Liu murmured ominously, his eyes flashing with deadly intent.

At a junction point, Old Liu pointed in one direction and said, "It’s safe down there."

"No zombies?"

"None."

"Alright, let’s go then!"

Old Liu was the first to jump from the vent, followed by Zheng. He looked around; it was a security room. The screens were black, indicating the connection to all CCTV cameras had been severed. A corpse lay on the floor, initially startling Zheng, but after seeing that half the head was sliced off, he realized it was already dead, and relaxed.

"There’s a plank outside. Once we cross it, we’ll be safe!"

"Oh, okay, I got it!"

Zheng responded absent-mindedly, unaware of the killing intent in Old Liu’s eyes. He was the first to step out of the security room and immediately saw the plank that Old Liu had mentioned.

The plank was made of a heavy-duty piece of wood, lying across the railings of two buildings. Zheng thought about his own weight and was convinced he could cross it. Just as he was about to climb up, for some reason, he had a hunch that something was not right with Old Liu behind him. He turned around to look.

Just then, Old Liu lunged at him with his knife!
