"Boss, that’s all we’ve got. If we go out now, we’ll probably get spotted,"

Yan Jie respectfully said to Tang Ye. Upon hearing this, Tang Ye didn’t reveal any discomfort. Instead, it was Chen Chaoyang and the others who looked grim upon hearing they couldn’t wear masks outside anymore.

After glancing over his group, Tang Ye went into a room to change. He emerged wearing the clothes that Yan Jie had brought.

The clothes were a bit tight, but it wasn’t a major problem. He lifted his hand and watched as the skin began to change. Veins, dark as nightcrawlers, disappeared, leaving behind only a pale layer of skin. At times, flesh rippled beneath it, at other points, a bump would rise up, or skin would retreat to reveal the bloody flesh underneath.

Despite the constant changes, Tang Ye couldn’t achieve the color he desired. Disappointed, he lowered his arm and the color returned to normal. He then looked out of the window.

There was a constant stream of people outside, with sporadic arguments breaking out. Looking out at the view, Tang Ye felt a headache coming on.

He wanted to leave – he could easily break out of the Yindan Base with his strength. But, the problem lay in the burdensome group around him, which would hinder his escape.

He contemplated killing them all and leaving with Nannan, but some lingering vestige of his humanity held him back.

As he was deciding on a reliable way to escape with the group, a new message popped up in his mind.

"How is it? Have you found the zombie?"

"No, not yet. It was seen naturally six hours ago and vanished after the fall of three Ka-53 helicopters. No word till now and no reports of it attacking people."

"Alright..."

Wen Yixian ran a hand across her forehead, pushing back her bangs. Ever since Tang Ye, the zombie she was concerned with, had vanished, she had been frustrated with the incompetence of the staff base.

Failing to contain such an important zombie, letting it escape, Wen Yixian was speechless. Yet, it was somewhat comforting that it hadn’t been fiercely attacking survivors.

She was suddenly reminded of someone she had forgotten.

"Ah, what about that Tang Ye, the Level 2 New Human we were looking for? Weren’t his subordinates seen around yesterday?"

"We couldn’t find Tang Ye. We went after Chen Chaoyang and his group, but then the zombie appeared. There’s no sign of them either, they must’ve been killed."

Tang Ye broke into their argument. He gave them a cold glance then looked towards the main gate of Yindan base. His ears lengthened and sharpened, vibrating rapidly, as though sending a message to unknown creatures.

Nannan awoke suddenly, crying out. The door burst open and Li Xiaoyan rushed in, exclaiming excitedly, "Boss, boss, it’s great, Nannan’s awake! She’s alive, she evolved!"

"What? Evolved?"

Chen Chaoyang was dumbfounded. He stood up swiftly and dashed into the room where Nannan was.

Tang Ye too heard Li Xiaoyan’s words. His ears returned to their normal shape, and he went in without saying anything.

Once inside, he pushed Chen Chaoyang aside and saw Nannan, who was crying continuously. The blisters on her face were gone, and her skin looked tender again.

He picked up her tiny form, sniffed her clothes deeply, and relaxed.

The scent of life on her was stronger than that of Chen Chaoyang and the others, clearly indicating she had indeed evolved. And she hadn’t died.

As to what evolution entailed, Tang Ye wasn’t sure. He couldn’t sense the strength of a new human based on smell alone. The most he could identify was whether something was edible or not.

Anything beyond that was just the quantity of energy he could further gain from consuming it.

The life scent on Nannan had become much stronger, only slightly less than Chen Chaoyang’s, but not by much.

A feeling of liberation washed over him. He didn’t know why he felt this way, but he did.

He realized he was afraid, afraid of losing Nannan, though he didn’t know why he was afraid of her dying.
