Chapter 1623: Chapter 1617: The Major General’s Walking Standards

As the officer spoke, Ghost Head instinctively glanced at Brother Shi. He wanted to lie, to say the three of them were survivors from the Second District Battlefield. But before he could speak, Brother Shi had already taken the lead and said, "Report! We... are deserters."

After saying this, he lowered his head. Ghost Head looked at him, angered by the fact that Brother Shi didn’t even try to cover it up. There was a chance they wouldn’t have been put in such a difficult position!

But on second thought, back when they escaped the "Graveyard," they had killed two veterans. By now, Bai Liang must have discovered they’d fled and likely reported it up the chain. If they lied and it was exposed, the consequences were clear. On the contrary, telling the truth might give them a chance.

"Almost unbelievably stupid..." Ghost Head thought to himself. Like Brother Shi, he lowered his head.

"Deserters?"

Hearing Brother Shi’s words, the officer narrowed his eyes. The soldiers around him froze, and the respect from just moments before instantly disappeared like smoke.

"You escaped from the Second District?"

Brother Shi and Ghost Head exchanged glances. Finally, Brother Shi shook his head at the officer. The officer immediately made the connection: before the Second District corpse tide defense operation began, there had been a batch of cannon fodder. Before the Graveyard Plan was initiated, the Second Team Officer had reported six people had fled. At the time, the situation was urgent as the corpse tide was about to arrive. No one had the time to chase a few deserters, so they were left unattended.

The officer hadn’t expected that these deserters would dare to return!

"There should be six of you, right? Why are there only three now?"

"The other three died out there."

"Hmph, died out there..." Hearing this, the officer sneered coldly before continuing, "What about the other three? I don’t care. What I want to know is, why are you back now?"

Brother Shi looked at the officer, and an inexplicable sadness appeared in his eyes. His voice trembled as he said, "My... my brother died in the Second District..."

"Your brother? Who is he? What’s his name?"

"His surname is Luo. He’s called Luo Zhenfeng."

"Luo Zhenfeng?"

Hearing Brother Shi’s response, the officer was momentarily surprised. By this time, Level 6 New Humans no longer held the intimidation they once had. Compared to the overwhelming power of Level 7 and Level 8 New Humans, those at Level 6 now seemed insignificant. However, Level 7 and Level 8 individuals were incredibly rare – among the seven billion people worldwide, fewer than 1,500 Level 7 and 8 New Humans had been identified. Among them, Level 8 New Humans, excluding recent deaths, numbered only about 180 or 190 individuals!

In this context, the value of Level 6 New Humans shouldn’t be underestimated. Even in a place like Dangerous Sanctuary City, they were prominent figures. Unsurprisingly, the officer had heard of Luo Zhenfeng before.

Even for him, someone like Luo Zhenfeng – a Level 6 Powerhouse – was not easy to interact with.

The officer was silent for a moment, as if recalling those connected to Luo Zhenfeng. Soon, he remembered that Luo Zhenfeng indeed had a relative, his younger brother – Luo Dianshi.

"You’re Luo Dianshi?"

"Yes."

Seeing that the officer knew of him, Brother Shi looked at him with some expectation. But to his disappointment, he didn’t see any of the respect he’d hoped for in the officer’s expression. The officer’s face remained indifferent. Realizing this, Brother Shi lowered his head again. His brother had been a Level 6 New Human, but he was a dead one. A dead Level 6 New Human had even less influence than a living ordinary person.

If that was the case, what was he expecting? For a dead man to help him?

As expected, he heard the officer let out a mocking laugh, which made his heart sink.

"What chance do you think you deserve?"

"To return to the battlefield and fight the corpse tide to the end."

"Oh? Can’t survive out there, so now you want to come back? Realized that without your brother’s protection, you’re nothing?"

The officer’s sarcastic voice echoed in Brother Shi’s ears. It was grating, and his fists unconsciously clenched. He wanted to glare back at the officer, but after hesitating, he gave up on the idea. He questioned his own fear: why couldn’t he face this man directly, especially when he had already accepted death? Perhaps he feared that angering the officer would lead to immediate, meaningless death. This time, he had returned for one purpose only – to kill zombies!

The officer surveyed the group. Seeing that Brother Shi and Ghost Head didn’t even dare to meet his gaze, his disdain for them only deepened. However, what annoyed him was the silent Yong, who stood beside Brother Shi. While the other two had their heads bowed low, this man had been looking directly at the officer without any change in expression. When their eyes met, Yong’s calm, emotionless stare made the officer feel as though he was standing before someone of a higher level. This indifference irritated his heart!

Brother Shi noticed Yong’s offense and wanted to remind him, but his hand, halfway extended, clenched into a fist again. The officer was right in front of them – any slight movement could draw his attention.

The officer tilted his head and walked up to Yong, ready to speak. But the next second, his peripheral vision caught someone approaching from behind Brother Shi’s group, step by step. His expression immediately grew serious, and he sharply saluted the newcomer!

This sudden action of the officer caught Brother Shi and the others’ attention. They raised their heads and turned slightly to see a man in an officer’s uniform walking toward them. Strangely, the man exuded an odd aura – unstable and hard to define.

If the evolution levels could be compared to a series of steps, this man seemed precariously perched on the edge of one, as though he might fall to a lower one at any moment.

Yet even so, his evolution level was far superior to Brother Shi and the others. His energy felt as vast as the ocean, making it impossible to discern its depth.

After the officer saluted the man with a sharp "snap," he said nothing further and simply waited as the man approached.

Brother Shi had thought the man would come over to question them. To his surprise, the man walked straight past the officer without a word. However, in that brief moment, he glanced at Yong before turning away and continuing onward.

As the man passed, Brother Shi noticed the insignia on his shoulder. It was of a general – a rank far higher than the officer’s!

Brother Shi quickly lowered his head, uneasy. He didn’t know why, but when the man had approached, something felt off. His movements were too precise, almost devoid of any natural rhythm?

The officer also hesitated momentarily, sensing something unusual. But like the others, he didn’t dwell on it.
