I am the Zombie King of the Apocalyptic World
Chapter 1612 - 1606: Torn Battle Clothes?

Chapter 1612: Chapter 1606: Torn Battle Clothes?

The two helped each other over to the wrecked monster truck. After searching inside for a while and gathering the scattered pieces of Yajin, they didn’t find Crooked Neck. Instead, at the base of the dirt mound, they saw a leg sticking out from the soil. They dug through the dirt and finally uncovered Crooked Neck. Compared to their own battered conditions, Crooked Neck’s exoskeleton battle suit was in much better shape; perhaps being in the driver’s seat meant he was thrown clear at the very first moment.

Just like what they did with Brother Shi earlier, after digging Crooked Neck out of the dirt, Ghost Head pried open his helmet and shook him several times before waking him up.

"Crooked Neck’s fine too."

"What about Yong?"

"He might have..."

Mentioning Yong left them speechless for a time. The laser fired from Tianguang in his hands had been set to full power—its recoil was enough to pulverize a second-generation corpse-crusher tank. If the three of them suffered so much as mere bystanders, Yong’s situation could only be worse. Maybe the A-level exoskeleton battle suit would have spared him an especially cruel death, but it would be a miracle if he were still alive.

When Crooked Neck was slapped awake by the other two, he couldn’t believe what he was seeing—they were still alive, alive after surviving a chase by a Level 7 zombie!

"We’re still alive?"

"What, not happy about it?"

"That’s not it, it’s just a bit..."

"Surreal, right?"

"Something like that..."

"Alright, let’s focus on finding Yong first," Brother Shi suggested. Guilt weighed on his heart. For his own survival, he had convinced Yong to fire Tianguang at maximum power. It was, without doubt, selfish. But in this world, truly selfless people were rare. There was no way to make amends now. All he could do was offer a silent apology to Yong in his mind.

He absentmindedly touched the side of his thigh, which brought him the cold, rigid sensation of his exoskeleton battle suit.

"Heh..."

For reasons unknown, Brother Shi chuckled softly. He withdrew his hand and pressed the suit’s retraction button. The clicking sounds of locking mechanisms unlocking echoed in his ears. With mechanical whirs, the battle suit disassembled segment by segment. He loosened his compression pack and tossed it aside, then pulled a phone from his pocket to check the time. It was 6:30. He couldn’t recall when they had lost consciousness but guessed it had been at least four hours.

Ghost Head and Crooked Neck leaned over to confirm the time on his phone before dragging their severely injured bodies to start gathering the scattered items on the ground. First, they collected the fragments of Yajin. In the process, they didn’t come across Yong’s corpse—or flesh and blood that seemed like it could belong to a living being.

While they were puzzling over this, Ghost Head found a Level 4 Evolution Crystal.

"This thing’s just lying here?"

"Pick it up. If we can’t find Yong, we’ll leave."

"Alright."

Ghost Head nodded. Just as he was about to pocket the Evolution Crystal, an issue arose: his compression pack had also been damaged, preventing him from removing the exoskeleton battle suit covering his body. He had no place to carry the crystal.

"I don’t have pockets. Where am I supposed to put this?" he muttered to Brother Shi, who responded, "Hold on, let me clear some space."

Brother Shi was holding a wooden stick, struggling to pry open a panel on the monster truck. Watching this, Ghost Head shook his head and decided he might as well zone out for a moment. He walked over to a large rock, not minding the dirt on it, and plopped down. Staring into the distance, he tried to recall moments from his past. Perhaps it was absurd, but for him, reminiscing brought a kind of simple peace.

He didn’t think he had much time left in this world. His life, uncertain and fragile, could end at any moment. In the brief time that remained, he wanted to do something meaningful for himself.

The cruelty of the apocalypse didn’t belong to him; he belonged to the vibrant world of the past.

The green expanse visible in the distance rekindled his memories. Fragmented moments from the past surfaced in his nearly blank mind.

His eyes took in the green, yet he wasn’t truly seeing it—his thoughts lingered in memories neither too long nor too short. A faint smile graced his face as he instinctively lowered his gaze, looking for something to do. It was then that he noticed something unusual below.

"What’s that?"

At the base of the dirt mound, he saw an enormous corpse, its entire body deathly gray-black. Many short lines, each about four or five centimeters long, covered its surface. Ghost Head froze. The corpse looked disturbingly familiar. Wasn’t this the body of that Level 7 zombie?

Beside the corpse stood a figure. Initially unable to make out their features, Ghost Head squinted and finally recognized them—it was Yong!

"You two, get over here!"

Seeing what lay below, Ghost Head urgently shouted for Brother Shi and Crooked Neck.

"What?"

"The Level 7 zombie is down there, and so is Yong—he’s alive."

"Huh?"

The two froze, exchanged a glance, then began supporting each other as they scrambled toward Ghost Head. Down below, Yong, standing beside the zombie’s corpse, raised his head to look at them but said nothing.

When the pair reached Ghost Head’s side, they indeed saw Yong. His exoskeleton battle suit had been removed, and he was standing with his arms folded, leaning against the claws of the Level 7 zombie as he silently watched them.

"Yong?"

"It’s really him..."

"He didn’t die?"

The three exchanged looks, their minds buzzing with chaotic disbelief. What had transpired earlier already felt surreal, and now this impossibility left them even more confounded. Sliding down the dirt mound, they approached Yong and took in his appearance. His military uniform was slightly dirty, with a torn sleeve exposing a gap, but otherwise seemed undamaged. What was even stranger—he bore no visible injuries, as if he had never been part of their prior standoff with the Level 7 zombie.

"Yong?" Crooked Neck asked, his voice trembling with uncertainty, unable to believe what he was seeing.

Yong didn’t answer but nodded. The three exchanged glances, sharing identical expressions of shock and unease.

"You’re okay?" Brother Shi asked. Yong, as before, responded with a nod.

"Where’s your exoskeleton battle suit?"

Yong pointed to the side. Turning their gaze, they saw it—not far from the broken trees lay the shattered remains of Yong’s exoskeleton battle suit. However, it seemed it hadn’t been removed through normal means...

The scattered suit, lying under the broken trees, was in countless fragments. It didn’t appear to be damage caused by collisions but rather looked as though it had been torn apart, like paper ripped by bare hands!

After inspecting it briefly, Ghost Head and Crooked Neck seemed indifferent to the details and quickly looked away. Only Brother Shi frowned privately, deep in thought.
