Chapter 1599: Chapter 1593: There Are Many "People" Below

The group looked at the monster truck, then at Brother Shi. They wanted to say something but seemed to realize there was nothing to say. In the apocalypse, being cautious never hurt—it was better than getting caught off guard. After all, mishaps were common, and they didn’t know much about Wangxing City’s situation. Besides, Wangxing City was known as a high-risk area.

"Then... let’s just check ahead. I’m not too sure myself..."

"So troublesome. Let’s go." Bald Head said irritably, boarding the vehicle and taking out the bag of food. In the apocalypse, anything could be discarded—except your life and food.

As they prepared to enter Wangxing City, the group activated the exoskeletal battle suits on their bodies, going on high alert for any surprises. They carefully stepped over the collapsed section of the overpass and began heading toward the city center of Wangxing.

"Doesn’t seem like much to me."

After walking for a while, Snapper grumbled. He felt this level of caution was overly redundant and a waste of time. Bald Head felt the same frustration. Holding the food bag protectively in one hand and hoisting Tianguang with the other like a maternal gorilla, he said as Snapper’s words fell, "Exactly. Why not just drive the truck straight through and leave? Isn’t that much simpler?"

"You only get one life. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. Being cautious isn’t wrong, is it?" Brother Shi countered.

"But are we being overly cautious now?"

"Hmph, there are zombies above Level 6 here. If we encounter a Level 6 zombie, with these exoskeletal battle suits, we still have a chance to escape. But if we run into a Level 7 or Level 8 zombie, Ma De—we won’t even know how we died."

Bald Head said nothing more, though his expression looked displeased. Only now did he realize Snapper had been right yesterday. They had been following the commands of this guy all the way. It annoyed him to think that he, a man over thirty, had been led by someone in their twenties. It didn’t sit well with Bald Head.

He fancied himself as quite clever—after all, wasn’t his bald head proof of overthinking? Too much brainwork and his hair had fallen out...

"You all... better keep quiet... There are... many... people... here..."

Brother Shi had barely finished speaking when Yong, who rarely spoke, suddenly uttered these words. Everyone shifted their attention to him and asked puzzledly, "What did you just say?"

"There are... many people here."

"Many people? Where?"

The group failed to understand what Yong meant. They glanced around but saw nothing except a city overtaken by green vegetation. No people, not even a trace of zombies.

Yong’s words made their hearts race inexplicably—it was odd. Though there was nothing around, they suspected Yong might be trying to scare them.

But the truth was, they did feel uneasy. After Yong spoke, the group fell into a rare moment of silence.

Though Yong seemed dull and disconnected, something about his words carried an unsettling, eerie authority. It felt like encountering a madman in a foreign place who suddenly warned you against entering because something strange awaited. What would you do in that moment?

In TV dramas, characters always ignore such warnings and stubbornly push forward. But in reality, anyone with half a brain would prefer to err on the side of caution—after all, you only live once, and gambling with your life isn’t worth it.

They didn’t walk far along the cracked, uneven highway before Brother Shi suddenly stopped, finding Yong’s earlier words troubling. He looked at Yong and asked, "What did you mean by your earlier statement? Where are the people?"

Yong didn’t answer. His gaze fixed on the distance as if something caught his attention. Brother Shi sensed something amiss and looked in the same direction, but he didn’t see anything unusual.

"Hey? Brother," Bald Head said, shaking Yong slightly. His eerie silence sent shivers down their spines.

"Where are the people you mentioned?" Bald Head pressed him directly. Still, Yong gave no reply. After a brief pause, he suddenly extended his arm. Instantly, all eyes turned toward Yong’s hand and the gesture he was making.

Yong’s movements were stiff. His arm stretched out rigidly, and he raised a finger, pointing ahead. The group followed his gaze toward the direction he was pointing—but there was nothing there.

"What’s this?" The group thought they were being led on, and Snapper grumbled discontentedly. But when they turned back to look at Yong, they saw him suddenly twist his wrist downward. Initially pointing forward, his finger now indicated the ground. But the ground? What about it?

Yong’s action resembled a zombie clambering out in a horror film—a mechanical, unnatural motion framed within the guise of someone seemingly human. It left them all with an involuntary chill.

"What’s on the ground?" The others turned their attention downward. The ground was just ground; nothing seemed noteworthy about it. Then suddenly, it dawned on them—their location: the highway overpass. What lay below?

Crooked Neck was first to react. Jogging quickly to the edge of the overpass, he looked down while muttering, "You don’t mean to say there’s... zombies... down there... right..."

As soon as his gaze shifted downward, Crooked Neck’s voice froze mid-sentence. Behind him, Yong remained calm, while Ghost Head, Bald Head, Brother Shi, and Snapper quickly ran over as well.

"What’s below?" Bald Head asked Crooked Neck absentmindedly, but before he could finish, Crooked Neck abruptly turned around, planting a hand over Bald Head’s mouth.

"Don’t speak!"

Bald Head paused briefly before prying Crooked Neck’s hand away out of curiosity, leaning forward to see for himself. As his eyes landed on what was below, his expression became completely vacant.

Similarly, Ghost Head, Brother Shi, and Snapper were left stunned by the sight.

"Holy—" After a long silence, Bald Head managed to stammer out a single exclamation.

Below the overpass lay a sea of zombies!

The countless dark-red, decaying heads of the zombies were crammed together, making the overpass appear as though it was floating above a dark, unending ocean. At this moment, they realized—they were standing right above a corpse tide!

If the zombies below were to discover them, their fate was unimaginable.

At that moment, everyone felt chills running up their spines. Their legs grew weak, as though all the strength had been drained in an instant!

Below, the zombies shuffled forward with sluggish steps. Despite their slow pace, the leading edge of the horde was no more than seven or eight hundred meters from where the monster truck was parked. Though the leading edge was visible, the back end extended into a dense, endless expanse—vast and boundless!

Pulling their heads back up, Brother Shi hurriedly whispered, "We can’t go through Wangxing City. We have to go around it!"

"Let’s turn
