Chapter 1587 - 1581: Working Together

Chapter 1587: Chapter 1581: Working Together

What they showed on their faces and bodies was all fake. If I’m being honest, even shitting would be hard to pull off.

With so many people staring at you, who wouldn’t feel pressure? And now Ghost Head and the others are all just pretending?

This situation left everyone a bit at a loss, but fortunately, Brother Shi had an older brother who was a Level 6 New Human. Although Brother Shi’s own strength wasn’t much, as they say, one person’s rise lifts all around them. His perspective was naturally broader than Ghost Head and the others.

Brother Shi’s eyes rolled as he quickly turned to Bai Liang and said, "We’re just worried you might... have other intentions toward us..."

"Pfft~"

No one knew if Bai Liang was amused or irritated, but he couldn’t help but burst out laughing. His face betrayed a smile he couldn’t control, while another officer laughed outright without holding back. One of them joked with Bai Liang after laughing, "Didn’t know you had that kind of kink!"

Bai Liang’s face darkened immediately, forcing the smile off his face. After a brief silence, he seemed to compromise, saying, "Alright, you lot... especially you, with that slick tongue... hurry up and come back quick!"

Upon hearing Bai Liang’s words, Ghost Head and his comrades couldn’t suppress their joy. Brother Shi respectfully said, "Thanks, Head of the Regiment!"

As soon as he finished, Brother Shi led the group, bolting toward a deserted spot outside. Judging by their hurried retreat, they really seemed anxious.

Bai Liang watched their backs as they ran off, narrowing his eyes slowly.

Hm.

He snorted. Who knew what emotion lay in his heart? Lifting his head, he shouted at two figures in the distance, "Ah Ping! Fei Zi! Get over here."

Ghost Head and his group heard Bai Liang’s voice too. Turning back to glance briefly, Brother Shi nodded toward them, nudging the "Tianguang" weapon on his exoskeleton pack with his head. His intent couldn’t be more obvious.

Responding to Bai Liang’s call, the two soldiers named Ah Ping and Fei Zi jogged over to him.

"Brother Liang, what’s up?"

The soldier named Ah Ping asked. Bai Liang gestured toward Brother Shi’s group with a nod, and the two men immediately understood.

"Follow them."

"Got it."

The two nodded and then followed the trail of Ghost Head and his group.

"Damn, they really came after us."

"Calm down. We’ve got the weapon. As long as we move fast enough — best if we put them down before they can react — we’ll be fine."

"What if someone screws up?"

"Why are you asking me? If we mess up, we’ll be left at Bai Liang’s mercy. All we can do is work hard to make it happen."

"Who’s firing first?"

"Watch for the right moment..."

Ghost Head and his crew’s expressions grew heavy. The two chasing them — Ah Ping and Fei Zi — were Level 3 New Humans. While Ghost Head’s group had "Tianguang," the laser weapon, there was no guarantee their opponents’ reflexes wouldn’t outpace them. If unable to keep up, that’d be fine — but if they did, then Ghost Head and his group were doomed.

The biggest issue now was deciding who would fire first. They had to eliminate their targets instantly without causing too much commotion.

Walking silently toward an isolated area, none of them dared to volunteer to strike first. They were all rookies, still unfamiliar with operating the "Tianguang." None of them could guarantee they’d hit their mark under any circumstance.

Living through the apocalypse taught them well — the level disparities between New Humans were significant.

So, any misstep could have catastrophic consequences!

The group moved in silence until they were almost out of sight when Yong suddenly asked, "What does ’fire’ mean?"

Everyone froze for a few seconds at Yong’s question, and Bald Head asked, "What, are you a caveman or something?"

"What’s a caveman?"

"Uh... never mind. ’Fire’ means who strikes first."

"Oh..." Yong nodded blankly and then said, "Then I’ll go first."

"You... Are you sure?"

"I... I’m a good shot..."

As Yong spoke, he fiddled with the "Tianguang" on his exoskeleton pouch. The group exchanged skeptical looks.

When you say you’re a good shot... just how good are we talking?

They doubted him but refrained from making any comments. At least Yong was willing to go first, meaning he had some confidence in his aim — unlike the rest of them, who were skittish and hesitant. After all, it didn’t matter who struck first; they had no choice.

The group finally made their way behind a pile of building ruins, checking their surroundings. Seeing it was clear, they exchanged glances, then collectively pulled down their pants and squatted. Nearby, Ah Ping and Fei Zi, the two Level 3 New Human soldiers, stood chatting casually.

They weren’t on guard against Ghost Head’s gang at all. It didn’t seem reasonable for them to expect any bold moves from the group — much less from Level 2 New Humans.

Meanwhile, the six members of Ghost Head’s squad squatted and began a frantic exchange of glances, all waiting for the right moment. But what kind of opportunity? There wasn’t a clear answer. They could only wait.

After about two minutes, Brother Shi gestured to Yong, signaling him to hurry up and act. But Yong seemed oblivious to the hint, his face as blank as before.

"Hey... Make your move!"

"Why?"

"Move..." Watching Yong’s dazed expression made Brother Shi impatient. He hissed the command through clenched teeth, but Yong just sat there, clueless.

"...F*ck..." Brother Shi regretted it deeply. Of all people to bring, why did he drag an idiot into this?

He pulled out his phone to check the time — they couldn’t linger here much longer. The sooner they acted, the better.

"Ma De, one of you take the lead!"

Giving up on Yong, Brother Shi turned to the other four.

"I don’t have what it takes..."

"Hey, you over there fiddling with your fingers — you try."

"I can’t do it either."

"F*ck... Then how long are we going to stay here?"

"Uh... why don’t we all act together? Bai Liang’s group is pretty far away. Shouldn’t cause too much noise." Ghost Head offered hesitantly.

With few options left, Brother Shi gritted his teeth, casting a hateful look at Yong before muttering under his breath, "I’ll count to three. We go together!"

"No other choice."

The rest nodded in agreement, Yong mimicking their movements.

"Three."

"Two."

"One! Do it!"

At the count of "one," Brother Shi was the first to leap up. He quickly pulled out his "Tianguang," flicked off the safety, and aimed at Ah Ping and Fei Zi!

The two soldiers immediately noticed Brother Shi’s actions — realizing something was off.

"What the hell are you doing?!"

Ah Ping shouted, rolling to the side as Brother Shi pressed the trigger!

Whoosh!

The hiss of laser cutting through the air was followed by a burst of blood. Brother Shi’s face turned ghost-white...
