Chapter 1567: Chapter 1561: A Rare Moment of Relaxation
Something’s off. Besides these colors, there seems to be one more—black!
But that doesn’t seem possible. Whether it’s zombies or humans, through cycle after cycle of evolution, the anti-life substance within their bodies undergoes qualitative change, washing away its original impurities. Therefore, after evolving to Level 1, the Evolution Crystals of beings other than zombified creatures appear slightly yellow due to the compact density of their anti-life substance. For evolved living beings, the Evolution Crystal Cores are pristine and transparent in color.
For zombies that haven’t evolved, however, their anti-life substance remains in its most primitive form, unaltered, and is blackish-red in color. When the apocalypse came, the rain that blanketed the world was black. If there were to be black Evolution Crystals, they would likely only be found in ordinary zombies. If such a crystal appeared inside a Level 9 zombie, that would truly diminish its value.
Come to think of it, this black, primitive anti-life substance—it feels strangely familiar to Tang Ye for some reason.
Tang Ye’s eyes gleamed slightly. If black is excluded, then it must be some utterly unprecedented color, a color unimaginable until you see it with your own eyes!
The tapping of his fingers on the tabletop grew more frequent all of a sudden. As Tang Ye saw it, evolving from Level 8 to Level 9 wasn’t particularly hard. The challenge lay with the color. Yet this precise challenge—seeing or understanding this new color—was the most difficult part of that evolutionary leap!
In essence, evolving from Level 8 to Level 9 required nothing more than recognizing a color you’ve never encountered before. Just that simple.
But if the Evolution Crystal of a Level 9 zombie carried this novel color, wouldn’t it mean he could mass-produce Level 9 zombies?
At this thought, Tang Ye became slightly excited but quickly calmed himself down. The idea of mass-producing Level 9 zombies and Level 9 New Humans was indeed enticing. However, if those Level 9 powerhouses ended up beyond his control, they’d be more of a curse than a blessing.
His tapping fingers stopped as he returned to his previous dilemma. Was there really a need to play the hero?
On his phone screen, titles of various funny skits seemed to hint at something. In a daze, Tang Ye recalled Su Sigui. It struck him only now that she was, in fact, a woman. A woman who, for all her outward strength, wasn’t as tough as she seemed. She had moments of helplessness, seeking aid she couldn’t give herself. The difference between them, beyond gender, lay in Tang Ye’s ability to stand by and watch indifferently without guilt, observing as events unfolded before his eyes. That was solely because he had accepted his zombie identity. Su Sigui, however, was human. Despite possessing unparalleled strength, she bore responsibilities most could scarcely fathom.
As she had once said, when the heavens collapse, tall people are needed to support them. Among those tall people, Su Sigui was one of them.
She had seen through many truths. In theory, she could have turned a blind eye, just as Tang Ye did, and lived her own life. But she understood this "tall person" role wouldn’t allow her to evade forever. When the heavens came crashing down, that weight would inevitably fall onto her shoulders one day!
Since escape was impossible, why not throw everything you had into overcoming it?
But why did she think this way? Perhaps it stemmed from being "human," a role that compelled her to strive for her species. Tang Ye, on the other hand, was a zombie. Yet, he, too, had another identity—Li Henian. And this Li Henian was human!
Once upon a time, he had been an ordinary human being!
Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap...
The sound of fingers tapping resumed on the desk as the word "cake" echoed in his mind once more.
He thought back to that day, years ago, when Su Sigui urged him into space. Upon returning to Earth, he had witnessed an unusual black mist—familiar yet alien at first sight. He remembered the territorial perception zone that extended from the Cloud Gorge Base, swiftly receding after touching his own senses. He thought of the Demon Sound Zombie Group advancing toward the Lan Ou Continent, of Kamutos suddenly adapting to maritime travel. All of it seemed to paint one picture: the Chinese Continent was a giant cake!
One day, the inevitable would arrive, and Tang Ye would be compelled to shoulder his share of responsibility. As to what that responsibility might be, Tang Ye wasn’t sure. But he did know one thing—in the eyes of others, this Chinese Continent was the domain of him, the Zombie King!
This "big cake" was, by all rights, his to claim!
Once ownership was determined, how to handle this "cake" would be entirely up to his attitude. He could choose not to consume it and let it decay unchecked, but no matter what, the cake would still remain his!
His choice not to eat it didn’t mean others had the right to snatch it from him!
Tap. Tap. Tap... Bang!
With one final decisive tap, Tang Ye drove his finger through the tabletop, exposing the wooden material beneath. It seemed he had come to a decision as his eyes narrowed.
Not long after, Tang Ye’s expression relaxed slightly, tinged with helplessness. He picked up a piece of raw beef with his chopsticks. To be fair, nothing suited a zombie’s taste better than fresh, raw beef.
"Alright, you win. I’d better help you out—after all, this is still my territory."
Muttering to himself, Tang Ye placed the fresh beef into his mouth.
In just over an hour, the aircraft carrying more than a hundred Royal Court elites spanned thousands of kilometers and arrived at the Royal Court. The moment the cabin doors opened, Ah Fu and the others dashed out eagerly, breathing in the grassland air as though finding a rare reprieve.
Stretching their limbs, Gert, Tu-E, and a few others started fooling around noisily. Observing this scene, Tang Ye’s lips curled into a faint smile, though it quickly faded. In a fleeting moment, his thoughts connected with Su Sigui again. He couldn’t help but wonder if a single action of his today might eventually doom this scene to become a memory.
"Hey, guys, wanna grab a bite to eat later?"
"Of course!"
"Which place? Pick one."
"The Longlan one. Great food."
"That one’s expensive though."
"Don’t forget me. I’m in."
"You still owe me over two hundred. When are you paying up?"
"If Tu-E pays up, I’ll eat sh*t standing on my head!"
"You said it! I’ll pay now, then find someone to pull you out some later."
"Quit arguing. We’re going to the Longlan place."
"Count me in too!"
"Kid, stay out of it!"
"Don’t act all high and mighty—I might be older than you!"
"Alright, tally up. We’re headed to Longlan, and Tu-E’s paying."
"No cash. Buzz off!"
