Chapter 1470: Chapter 1465: The Familiar Corridor

"Will they come out?"

"Some will, some won’t, there’re too many, I can’t handle them all." The woman said, and after a short while, she stopped and her expression turned solemn.

"What’s wrong?"

"Someone’s coming?"

"Huh?"

Tang Ye looked towards where the woman was looking, and saw more than a dozen people wearing black overcoats walking this way.

"You deal with them."

"Me?"

"If not you, then who, me?"

Tang Ye furrowed his brows and said reluctantly: "Should I kill them?"

"Just knock them out."

"I might not be able to do that."

"Really?"

"I’m afraid I can’t control my power."

"Is it that exaggerated?" the woman skeptically looked at Tang Ye.

Tang Ye spread his hands, if he were a Level 8 zombie, knocking out ordinary people was still doable, but at Level 9, the power he possessed was too overwhelming. What an ordinary person could do becomes extremely difficult for a Level 9 Powerhouse to accomplish. It’s like a human trying to deal with an ant, not to kill it, but to take a small piece of flesh from it, this is much more difficult than just killing them!

After all, once the power is unleashed, it could kill an ant or even a group of ants.

For a Level 9 entity to knock out ordinary people is much more difficult than for ordinary people to take a piece of flesh from an ant. After all, if ordinary people have some tools, they could manage, but does a Level 9 have any tools for knocking out ordinary people?

"I can’t explain it to you, but it can be done in another way."

"What way do you have?"

"Let’s go."

"Just like that?"

"Don’t worry." Tang Ye nodded with absolute certainty.

The woman followed Tang Ye downstairs with half doubt, and as the two got closer to the group in black overcoats, the tension in the woman’s grasp on her shovel increased, looking ready to smash the shovel on the head of one of them at any moment!

However, she soon realized that as their figures came into the group’s line of sight, the group did not rush towards them as she had imagined, eager to capture her!

They were as if blind, walking quite normally towards them step by step.

Tang Ye gave her a tug, and the two of them pressed against the wall of the stairs.

"They... they can’t see us?" the woman asked Tang Ye in astonishment, whispering.

"Zombies have superpowers now?"

"Not really superpowers..." Tang Ye hesitated, looked around, and at the nearby wall there was a graffiti of a human shadow. His eyes narrowed, and he pointed to the graffiti and said: "Maybe it works on the same principle as those human shadow graffitis."

"Psychological invisibility, huh."

"Psychological invisibility is a very apt description." Tang Ye nodded as they watched the group in black cloaks walk past them, heading upwards.

After their disappearance, a question suddenly arose in Tang Ye’s mind.

"Why not kill them?"

"What you’re facing now are only these Recyclers and your lower-level kind. If you kill your kind, that’s somewhat acceptable since they’re not human, but these Recyclers are people. Killing them is murder, a crime, and if you commit a crime, the police will come for you."

"Maybe you think it doesn’t matter, since the law has become virtually non-existent for beings like you, but it’s disadvantageous for finding a way out. Dairya enjoys seeing chaos unfold."

"I see, looks like I should listen to an old player like you."

"Of course."

"By the way, these Recyclers’ job is to retrieve the corpses of those who violate the Regulatory Codes, but what’s the purpose of collecting these bodies?"

"For Dairya. Do you know why this place is called a recycling station? Compare it to the real world before the black rain: turning waste into something useful for people. If left unattended, they would naturally decompose, and Dairya wouldn’t like to see her food being eaten by others, not even willing to share a gram."

Tang Ye shook his head, frowning.

"What? Don’t understand?"

"It’s not that."

Tang Ye himself didn’t know how to explain it. He understood, but couldn’t recall how he came to understand, which left him confused and uncertain about the specifics.

The woman seemed to be pondering something, then finally nodded at Tang Ye, but said nothing.

"We’re not far now, let’s go."

She led Tang Ye further down, and after not many steps, Tang Ye saw the entrance to the next level – a wooden door that emanated an aura of ancient longevity.

Tang Ye leaned over the edge of the stairs to look down and saw the staircase winding down seemingly endlessly, as if without a bottom, and the entrance to the next level was not visible.

"Are you sure this isn’t a basement?"

"It’s not. You have to trust me," the woman replied to Tang Ye, and then she opened the wooden door and stepped out. Tang Ye followed closely behind, and what he saw was a corridor. When Tang Ye observed the corridor wall facing him, his eyes narrowed.

This corridor was all too familiar to Tang Ye!

After passing through the door, just as Tang Ye suspected, the paintings existed on one side of the wall only, while the other side was completely bare.

"These paintings..."

"What’s wrong?"

Tang Ye observed the paintings. Although arranged in the same manner as the ones he had seen outside, the actual content of these paintings was entirely new. Yet what was consistent throughout every painting here was the content, which marked the greatest difference.

The paintings appeared to depict the living room of a family home, with a family of five seated around a dining table. The scene reflected in the window was obviously different from that of China. The three children were holding bowls and seemed to have rust-tainted cutlery, while the couple had their utensils laid on the table, their faces showing signs of panic as they looked at the camera—with their gazes seemingly piercing through the painting to focus on Tang Ye.

"The direction they are looking..."

Tang Ye turned his head for a glance; behind was just a wall. The furniture in the painting was sparse and slightly decrepit. In the scenery outside the window was an inappropriately placed black dot. Tang Ye leaned closer to see that it seemed like the outline of something, perhaps a bullet?

He moved to another painting, and the content was similar but had subtle differences—for example, the scene outside the previous painting’s window showed one side of a building, but in this one, the side of the skyscraper seemed to have a large chunk missing.

The family at the dining table, with three children maintaining an innocence befitting kids, used their utensils to eat from the plates. The adults, just like before, had faces tinged with panic as they looked towards Tang Ye.
