Chapter 1461: Chapter 1456 - Large-Scale Probing
He stopped his movements and walked out to check the situation of other shadow graffiti. The second shadow graffiti on this side had not changed and was still in the original position, but on the opposite old house, the shadow graffiti that he rubbed until only an arm and a head were left had disappeared, and another one was missing, probably flown elsewhere. In Martyrs’ Cemetery, the original two shadow graffiti were now all on the ground, people passing by left footprints on them one after another, yet they showed no reaction.
However, on the road to Xi River City Center, there appeared five or six additional shadow graffiti, which, if not looked at carefully, might be mistaken for white ghosts. Their feet pointed towards Martyrs’ Cemetery, as if these lost souls were heading towards there.
Tang Ye held a steel pipe in his hand and walked along the road towards the City Center. Every time he saw a shadow graffiti, he would tentatively scratch it twice. As he walked along the road, cars occasionally passed by, and drivers, startled by Tang Ye walking into the middle of the road, would slam on the brakes with a screeching sound. After recovering from the shock, these drivers would stick their heads out of the windows and curse at Tang Ye, calling him a lunatic.
Perhaps they believed he was actually crazy, as what normal person would walk in the middle of the road with a steel pipe? Clearly, it was a suicidal act, if not madness. People didn’t bother to entangle with a crazy person, merely cursing a few words before hurriedly leaving.
But Tang Ye did not care to pay attention to them; he just did his own thing and continued his way to the City Center. Arriving at a mall in the business district of Xi River city, Tang Ye paused, looking at the numerous shadow graffiti visible everywhere, he could only sigh, "There are really a lot of these shadow graffiti!" They were as ubiquitous as small advertisements, like rotting spots on a zombie’s body clinging to the surface!
Moreover, people would subconsciously ignore them, unaware of the peculiarities of these graffiti. Tang Ye was the same; initially, he did not notice the existence of these shadow graffiti. When he started to pay attention, he didn’t even know if he had seen them while passing by those places.
All along the way, whenever he saw one, he would scrape it with the steel pipe, but the result was always the same; they showed no reaction.
In the mall, there were nearly a dozen shadow graffiti, and Tang Ye was not in the mood to test each one. The mall was bustling with traffic, and fashionably dressed young men and women occasionally walked past Tang Ye, completely oblivious to the abnormalities in the world. Despite their eerie appearance, these shadow graffiti weirdly did not affect the atmosphere, instead, they seemed to fill their surroundings with a market-like flavor.
Tang Ye found a random spot on the first floor of the mall and sat down, watching the shadow graffiti within his sight, sometimes noticing a few shifting positions inadvertently.
It seemed as if he remembered something. He only sat for a while before suddenly standing up, but the next second, he sat back down again.
"That’s not right, I’ve tested them all, and there’s nothing abnormal, right?"
The dream-like experience from last night reappeared in his mind. His swinging blade had hit something; if it was real, he might have violated the regulations. Perhaps, apart from the shadow graffiti he encountered at the zoo, that was why he suddenly woke up in his Xiangyi Hotel room and discovered that people he had interacted with after the prohibition hours had died mysteriously.
As thoughts flashed through his mind, Tang Ye seemed to return to a moment before. He began to mutter, "Did all the strange incidents happen after the prohibition hours?"
Thinking this, he looked around, intending to act immediately to verify his thoughts, but just as he stood up, Tang Ye dismissed the idea.
"Forget it, I’ll try again tonight."
After one last glance at the shadow graffiti, Tang Ye showed an ambiguous smile, then left the place and headed towards the Xiangyi Hotel.
Compared to the night, the Xiangyi Hotel seemed somewhat deserted during the day. Aside from the occasional passing staff, the lobby was practically void of other people during the evening. Tang Ye ascended the stairs; interestingly, there was also a shadow graffiti between the second and third floor staircases. For this particular shadow graffiti, Tang Ye suddenly felt a clear perception of these strange graffiti.
It was the kind of thing that is clearly easy to spot and ubiquitous, yet, as someone directly involved, one can’t help but forget it! Tang Ye hadn’t been sure before, but now he was extremely certain of this feeling!
When he reached the third floor, he looked back at the shadow graffiti on the wall of the staircase; its position seemed to have changed slightly.
Tang Ye suppressed his impulse and did not wipe off the damn shadow graffiti.
"I’ll try again tonight."
Muttering to himself, Tang Ye headed towards his room, not to be seen until after dark.
The day passed quickly when people were unwittingly busy. For Tang Ye, everything came quickly. At 8:30 PM, his phone alarm went off. Lying in bed, Tang Ye got up almost at the same time the alarm sounded.
"Hmm, that’s reasonable." Taking out his phone and looking at it, Tang Ye nodded. His reaction to the sound was very sensitive, just as expected of a zombie. The sound was not abnormal.
He opened the curtains to look outside, just like what he had experienced the day before, the city under the cover of night seemed especially profound, with only a few lights visible in the distance. Opening the window, a breeze blew in, bringing sounds into the quiet room, finally adding a breath of wind.
It was like someone in a small world had pierced the barrier blocking the larger world, allowing different sounds to flood in, enriching everything.
After enjoying the cold night air for a while, Tang Ye’s closed eyes opened, and he discovered, the fourth article of the standard conduct regulations didn’t seem correct. The hotel’s walls had good soundproofing, unlike what the fourth article described. However, for some reason, Tang Ye felt like something was missing.
Some things he should have heard, smelled, or seen didn’t appear, and he couldn’t remember what it was exactly. Tang Ye didn’t think much of it, closed the window again, and walked towards the door.
The second night was his first time to start a large-scale probe, needing to know what would happen if he influenced some people and then violated the standard conduct regulations in places where he doesn’t exist?
