Chapter 1434: Chapter 1429: Vigilance Against Assimilation
He had seen thefts of gold, cars, and antiques, but never had he seen a theft of animals from a zoo, especially not crows, and this crow’s feathers didn’t even look that good. Did they really need to resort to such means to get it?
Could it be that some expert claimed eating crows could enhance kidney function, sparking a series of gray industries?
Of course, Tang Ye excluded himself from stealing animals, although some adorable little animals were inevitably going to suffer later on...
The backpack on the boy was opened, revealing an immobile crow inside. A staff member picked it up and handed it to another person to check: "It’s just been sedated, nothing else is wrong."
Seeing the crow taken out, the couple was immediately filled with despair. The boy knelt down on the ground and pleaded, "Please, don’t take it away. Lend it to us for one night, just one night, and we will return it first thing tomorrow morning! Please!"
Hearing the boy’s words, Tang Ye’s ears twitched. Could crows have some use during the night in this world?
As the boy knelt and begged, the girl also knelt down next to him and joined in pleading with the staff, as if they couldn’t survive without the crow.
However, the staff showed no mercy towards them, ignored the young couple, and one of them took the crow and left the scene. The couple’s faces grew even more desperate, but they didn’t stop their behavior, continuing to cry and beg until they started knocking their heads on the ground, making a thudding noise.
Tang Ye didn’t immediately proceed with his own business. His gaze shifted to a ticket booth not far from the checkpoint. Through the glass, he saw a staff member sorting money, stacks of RMB piled on the table in front.
In this world, having money made things much easier.
Thinking this, Tang Ye approached the ticket booth unseen. The staff inside didn’t notice as a thin, peculiar object quickly snatched a stack of cash right under her eyes. By the time she realized the place where the RMB should have been was empty, it was too late.
Tang Ye, on the other hand, pocketed the stack of cash and walked out. Although it was unethical, expecting him, a zombie from before the Apocalypse, to honestly earn his own money here was pure fantasy.
He walked over to the couple, who, even now, hadn’t stopped pleading. They continued to smash their heads on the ground repeatedly while crying out "Please, please" over and over.
What was more interesting was the indifference exhibited by the people around. They calmly walked past the couple and exited the zoo. This scene, compared to what might happen before the Apocalypse, gave a more chilling sensation. It wasn’t disillusionment with humanity, but rather an unease about some unreasonable phenomenon.
"Enough already, the staff have already left with the item. Continuing like this is pointless." Tang Ye stood in front of the couple, unacknowledged by passersby who merely glanced at the couple before leaving the zoo.
Hearing Tang Ye’s figure, the couple seemed to snap out of their desperation. The boy looked up at Tang Ye, puzzled.
"Who are you?"
"You wouldn’t know if I told you."
The boy turned to his girlfriend and sighed, saying, "Let’s get up."
Instead of getting up, the girl remained on the ground, soon starting to sob, "What are we going to do tonight, what..."
"It’s okay, we’ll find a way to get through tonight. We still have time."
"Hey, hey, hey, pay attention to me for a second." Seeing the boy comforting his girlfriend, Tang Ye couldn’t help but interrupt.
Both looked at him, the boy’s attitude suddenly shifted, abandoning his earlier desperate demeanor.
"Who exactly are you?"
"Like I said, you wouldn’t know."
"What do you want?"
"I have a question to ask."
"What question?"
"What do you need the crow for?"
"Are you messing with me? Believe it or not, I’ll beat you up?"
The boy’s expression turned angry, filled with hostility towards Tang Ye, as if he was being deliberately insulted.
Tang Ye’s eyebrows twitched slightly, restraining his urge to tear apart the boy. "What happens at night?"
"Who the hell knows, why don’t you try staying outside tonight?"
With that, the boy pulled his girlfriend and started leaving the zoo, muttering, "It’s everywhere, are you illiterate or what?"
Watching the couple leave, Tang Ye recalled something someone had said earlier to him, "There are notices all over, just look around."
"The notices everywhere?"
Tang Ye could not help but wonder. He had observed his surroundings quite keenly on his way here but had not noticed any notices to the extent that they were supposedly easy to find.
Of course, there were some notices within the zoo that Tang Ye had seen, all commercial-related, with nothing about what might happen at night!
Watching the couple disappear from his view, Tang Ye suddenly felt that feeling of having forgotten something once again. This sudden sensation made him uncomfortable, as he hadn’t felt this way in a while.
However, it was this sudden onset of the sensation that alerted him!
Thinking back to when he first entered this world, his mind was overwhelmed like waves crashing continuously. But now, it had been a long time since the last wave. Had he adapted? Adapted to this environment?
For Tang Ye, adaptation was not a positive term but a dangerous sign. He couldn’t adapt; he needed that sensation to remind him, for to him, adapting to this environment meant assimilation.
"What was I just about to think about? What exactly was it? The crow? What can a crow do before the Apocalypse?"
He tried to provoke that sensation through random thoughts, but to no avail.
"What happens at night? Am I targeted?"
After a while, Tang Ye shook his head in resignation and turned back towards the inner parts of the zoo. Unbeknownst to the staff preparing to close, the butcher’s claws were already reaching towards the animals they had locked up.
Before long, noises came from both the Bear Zone and the Tiger Zone. The idle staff glanced in that direction but didn’t go to check what was happening. They assumed it was just the animals making noises since the visitors had almost all left.
"Must be in heat, huh?"
