Chapter 143: Chapter 141 A Flash of Inspiration_1

"Ning Tianlang? Never heard of him. He’s a Level 2 New Human, but there aren’t any Level 2 New Humans at our base. Your friend must not be in the Yindan Base."

"Oh, I see, thanks anyway."

With a disappointed expression, Yan Jie took a bag of red bean buns from his pocket and handed them to the person he had just asked. Seeing the buns, the man’s face broke into a grin as he took them without hesitation.

"Heh, you’re too polite, young man. Feel free to come find me if you need anything else. My name’s Zhang Zhineng, and I live over on Changxing Road. Just ask anyone around there, they’ll know me."

As he looked down at the buns in his hand, Zhang Zhineng felt increasingly favorable towards Yan Jie. He hadn’t expected to receive a bun just for answering a question, even though he hadn’t provided any useful information.

This was quite the deal!

Not feeling like talking anymore, Yan Jie waved a hand and moved to walk in the other direction. After a few minutes, he ran into a gloomy-looking Chen Chaoyang.

"Man, how are we supposed to find this guy? Nobody here knows who Ning Tianlang is. This is crazy."

"Who is Ning Tianlang anyway? Why is our boss so insistent on finding him?" Yan Jie asked, puzzled.

"Not him, we’re looking for his daughter. I have no idea why though; goes after a woman with a kid."

Chen Chaoyang said, his expression growing agitated as his words trailed off. Suddenly, his eyes widened in disbelief as he stared at Yan Jie.

"Wait... did you say you don’t know who Ning Tianlang is?"

"Why on earth would I know who Ning Tianlang is?"

"Dude, do you realize how famous Ning Tianlang is? He’s a Level 2 New Human!"

"So what?"

Chen Chaoyang looked at Yan Jie, his expression changing from surprise to fear.

A horrifying realization dawned on him - his father, Chen Huaijiang, had lied to him! Ning Tianlang and his daughter Ning Yu’er weren’t even in the Yindan Base!

Being the son of a soon-to-be ruler of the Qinshan Base, he was privy to secrets that most people didn’t know. New Humans were rare in this post-apocalyptic world, let alone Level 2 New Humans!

Most known Level 2 New Humans had already made quite a name for themselves among the elites at all the major bases – the Dragon Group Four Monarchs, the Retribution Blades, etc. They were all Level 2 New Humans!

However, their names were only known by those with real power at the different bases.

Most people had never even heard of them, which wasn’t surprising. Even during the apocalypse, countries were still working to undermine each other. Assigning status based on power rather than merit seemed unfair, but there was no changing the situation now.

Long-term irrational ideas still occupied the minds of the politicians. Instead of tackling current problems, they were already thinking about how to rebuild civilization once the apocalypse ended.

The humanitarian law enacted by the United Nations before the apocalypse was still in effect, and despite the prevailing principle of might makes right, countries were still keeping their power structures hidden from each other and maintaining a façade of harmony!

While Level 2 New Humans were indeed powerful, revealing their existence would lead to widespread panic among ordinary people. The government tried to assuage fears, but this was obviously not working as planned.

It seemed easy to talk about ending the apocalypse, but the infection had already spread to over six billion people globally. Moreover, numerous individuals were hidden in unknown corners like rats, scurrying about to ensure their survival!

The anti-life matter was dubbed the "Human Terminator" or "H-virus" or simply "H-matter".

The day when the black rain fell, China was in its holiday season. Many people were out for vacation, making it one of the regions hardest hit by the infection. That being said, other countries were not faring any better. By now, many had gone silent, seemingly taken over by the infected!

Hiding the existence of Level 2 New Humans didn’t really have any significant effect as many survivors in the bases were already aware of their existence. However, ordinary people were getting used to their apocalyptic existence. While they feared becoming slaves, they were also hoping to evolve into New Humans someday!

The real goal was to deal with so-called diplomacy. The international situation was chaotic. A series of complex maneuvers that didn’t make sense were being played out, as if the world hadn’t already descended into an apocalypse.

In Chen Chaoyang’s view, once Tang Ye entered the Yindan Base, it wouldn’t be long before he worked his way into the upper echelons of power, and he could even seize control thanks to his Level 3 zombie strength!

However, he wasn’t sure if Tang Ye could fool the New Humans’ senses, given that Tang Ye didn’t have any human aura about him.

Chen Chaoyang was worried. After all, he told Tang Ye that Ning Yu’er was at the Yindan base. But if she wasn’t, Tang Ye, as a zombie, would surely want to devour him.

Thinking about this, Chen Chaoyang felt his head throb, and cold sweat started to trickle down his back!

"She simply must be here, Ning Yu’er; please, I beg you. Or else I’m done for..."

Chen Chaoyang prayed in his mind, placing all his hopes in Yan Zhaofeng. Once Yan Zhaofeng said the word, his chances of survival would be secure.

"Come on, follow me."

"Where to?"

"To that bastard’s place."

"Which bastard?"

"The leader of the group who arrested us."

"Oh... Wait, where are we going?... I don’t want to go back to that place, I’ve suffered enough there. If it weren’t for our boss showing up in time, I would be dead by now."

Chen Chaoyang shivered slightly, suddenly feeling hesitant about going back to the government building. But to appear normal, he casually opened a bag of potato chips and began munching.

During previous visits, one of the men who captured them had nearly cut him in half with a knife.

Going into the lion’s den again didn’t seem like a good idea, especially as he wasn’t sure how Tang Ye had negotiated with Yan Zhaofeng. If things went south, he might never get out again.

Despite Yan Zhaofeng’s friendly demeanor yesterday, he could change his tune at any moment. If Chen Chaoyang said anything wrong, Yan Zhaofeng might just throw him to the zombies!

"Alright then, let’s keep asking around, and head back when the time is right."

Yan Jie nodded and set off in a different direction, asking random pedestrians along the way.

With fear in his heart, Chen Chaoyang lost interest in finding out where Ning Yu’er was. It was quite possible that she wasn’t at Yindan Base. If that was the case, then his father had put him in a dangerous position.

As he walked, he tried to think of a plausible excuse to trick Tang Ye.

"Boss, I beg you. You’re a wise zombie, have some sympathy. I’m also a victim here. You’ve even saved me before, so you wouldn’t..."

As he muttered to himself, a thought suddenly sparked in Chen Chaoyang’s mind...
