Chapter 1408 - 1403: A Trap?
Chapter 1408: Chapter 1403: A Trap?
"This is the eleventh time, huh? What big event has happened again?"
"Ah, you remember so clearly?"
"If I didn’t remember clearly, how would I dare ask someone for a debt repayment?"
"You..."
Caught off guard by such a retort, the face of one of the Level 8 New Humans suddenly darkened.
Feeling the thick smell of gunpowder between the two and their potential explosive state, another Level 8 Powerhouse who had just hurried over directly interrupted them.
"Both of you mind the occasion we’re in!"
Following his words, the two Level 8 New Humans each snorted coldly, one with a face full of triumph, the other sullen, but neither said more and took their seats respectively.
Soon after, more and more Level 8 New Humans arrived, scanning the surroundings with a hint of surprise because the row of seats on the right, long unoccupied, now had people sitting in them.
"They are all rare guests, what brought them here this time." A man with a dark red tattoo on his neck mockingly said towards the powerhouses of Bright Moon City, but no one responded. He laughed awkwardly and, like the others, took his seat.
"Zhang Linglai, it’s been so many days, how are you considering it?" A Level 8 New Human sitting not far from the head of the room asked another who had just sat down.
The Level 8 New Human named Zhang Linglai shook his head and replied, "I still need some more time."
"How long do you actually need to consider?"
"A cautious mind is necessary, isn’t it?" Zhang Linglai sneered. The man questioning him also had his expression turn gloomy. Perhaps sensing the strange atmosphere, Zhang Linglai quickly looked towards the head seat, puzzled, "Eh? Old Qu is always the first to arrive, why isn’t he here today?"
Following his words, everyone’s attention was drawn to the head of the room. They too felt surprised. Setting aside Qu Yangming’s faults, he was known for his strict punctuality and would never be late. Today was truly unusual.
The man who had spoken to Zhang Linglai turned his gaze towards the members of Bright Moon City, asking with a hint of accusation, "Strange, all of you are here, so where is your mayor? Why didn’t she come?"
Xu Tianyu turned his head to look at the man and replied expressionlessly, "Please rest assured, Captain Jiang. Our mayor will not disappoint you."
His response almost provoked the other party to violence. His full name was Jiang Ping, and the title "Captain" was not a term of respect but more of a mockery. Before the Apocalypse, his identity was a security guard in a community, not yet twenty years old, choosing such a profession young. Although no profession should ever be mocked, his parents and relatives seemed to think of him as unambitious, and more a subject of ridicule during after-dinner talks than his parents’ disappointment.
Although he was promoted to security captain fairly soon, his subordinates were all much older than him, and he got promoted only because he was the only one among the security guards with a high school diploma—too easily achieved, which did not change public perception but rather increased disdain.
After all, who would take a retirement-like job at his energetic age before the Apocalypse?
After the Apocalypse began, he led his older colleagues to the former safe zone of Xige City, and his name as security captain became well known amongst his colleagues.
The title of security captain should have vanished long ago, but after evolving to Level 8, his adversaries purposefully used the term with sarcastic intent, thus the title resurfaced and has since become unique to him.
Jiang Ping stared intently at him, while Xu Tianyu fearlessly met his gaze, the two locked in a standoff, with bystanders quietly watching the drama unfold.
However, the standoff did not last long. Soon, time exceeded the scheduled start, and seeing that the head seat was still vacant, the attending Level 8 Powerhouses started to grow suspicious.
"Why hasn’t Qu Yangming arrived?"
"That old man didn’t die on some woman’s belly, did he?"
"Uh... haven’t you noticed this meeting feels different?"
"How is it different?"
"Usually, the decision-making department sends out notifications, but this time it was..."
Someone took out their cell phone, glanced at it, and while previously nobody cared, a careful look revealed something off about the sender of the message.
"01633... that’s your code, right?" Someone looked over at the members of Bright Moon City. The air thickened for a few seconds, and aside from the members of Bright Moon City, all other Level 8 New Humans suddenly stood up, looking around warily.
"Your trap? Are Li Henian’s people nearby? Trying to catch us all?"
"Vice Mayor, you should understand, if you truly choose to do this, there is no benefit for you; if we all die, following your mayor’s wishes, Cloud Gorge Base will also perish with us."
"Everyone, calm down, I think Su Sigui isn’t foolish."
Xu Tianyu and others from Bright Moon City watched as all the major powerhouses stood up from their chairs, not saying a word, nor offering any explanations, just as quiet, seemingly waiting for something.
A relatively calm Level 8 New Human scanned around and sat back down, saying, "Every time we gather here, it’s to discuss major issues; this time should be initiated by Mayor Su. If that’s the case, I believe Mayor Su must have something important to tell us, let’s not panic."
His words managed to relax a few powerhouses, but someone retorted the next second, "You sure are optimistic, then answer me, why hasn’t Qu Yangming arrived yet? He’s not the type to be late."
Just as the man finished speaking, everyone’s gaze was captured by a figure at the door.
"Su Sigui, you’ve finally arrived. Now you better explain yourself well," someone shouted at the entering figure, and it was indeed Su Sigui.
On seeing her, many were on the verge of voicing their discontent, but somehow, upon clearly seeing Su Sigui, they inexplicably held themselves back!
For some reason, today’s Su Sigui seemed different from usual? As for what exactly was different, they couldn’t specify, only feeling that she seemed somewhat authoritative?
And here, "authoritative" isn’t about being taller...
