Chapter 1380: Chapter 1375: The Long-Awaited Nightmare
"Go in." The nearby Order Alliance Guard finally spoke, but with as few words as possible. Gong Xiao didn’t say much, just nodded and walked into the elevator. The Order Alliance Guard followed her into the elevator, and with the doors closing, Gong Xiao clearly felt the descent.
What surprised her was that the elevator walls made no sound at all, not while opening nor closing!
If she hadn’t seen it with her own eyes, she might not have noticed, even if it opened less than a meter behind her, and remember, she is a Level 8 zombie with very keen hearing!
She surveyed her surroundings, finding no display panels in the elevator, only two buttons, one for going up and one for down. The elevator led to only two places: the less than fifty square meters of the observation room above and to an unknown location below.
And that place was, more likely than not, the so-called Order Alliance Guard Production Place!
She glanced at the Order Alliance Guard next to her, a bit curious about her original state, but the guard’s face remained as static as if frozen, deterring Gong Xiao from pondering further.
Her current mission was to play the role of an ordinary human well. Once it was confirmed to be a research institute, her kind could come directly here.
However, what puzzled all zombies was why the Heavenly Khan wanted to find this research facility?
The only thing of value in this institute was the Order Guards, but apparently, they were not important to him, as the broodmother could produce countless Level 8 zombies, each as strong as the next and utterly loyal to him!
"What could be inside? Perhaps the answer will be uncovered soon."
This was what she thought to herself as she and the Order Alliance Guard waited patiently for the elevator to reach its destination. Yet gradually, her impatience grew!
There was no way to tell the time in the elevator, and the Order Alliance Guard next to her stood as still as a statue, let alone answering any questions.
She had no idea how fast this damn elevator descended; she only knew that she had been there for a long time. How much time, exactly? She had no point of reference, but it felt interminable, truly interminable!
The protracted wait made her body start to shake, and a destructive desire began to grow within her!
"Damn it! When will we get there?" she roared silently to herself, several times suppressing the violence in her heart.
"Boss, how much time has passed?"
She began to ask Tang Ye, who was observing the direction of Gong Xiao, though his attention was not on her, but rather on the flock of red feather birds nearby.
"The red feather birds are nearby, does this signify anything?" he mused to himself, swiftly receiving the telepathic message from Gong Xiao.
He looked at his phone and replied promptly: "Twenty-five minutes, nearly half an hour now."
"What?"
"Just be patient a little longer; this research institute is really well-hidden."
"I can hardly bear it!"
"If you can’t take it, you could chat with Song Muyuan or Tu-E; maybe he can teach you how to live like a lord without paying back what you owe."
Gong Xiao fumed with anger, but before she could reply, a "beep" suddenly sounded within the elevator. Hearing this, Gong Xiao’s face instantly brightened; this ordinary sound signified the end of her nightmare!
Then, just as she had expected, the elevator door slowly opened following the sound, silent just like when she had entered; her irritation evaporated as the doors slid open.
"We’ve been here for almost half an hour already. It seems this place is deep underground. How are you going to get in later, boss?"
Tang Ye chuckled upon receiving Gong Xiao’s reply, responding: "Isn’t that simple? It’s not something rare; just smash through it, and that’s it."
"True." Gong Xiao imperceptibly nodded. For a Level 8 zombie like her, even falling from outer space to the Earth’s surface would at most result in severe injuries. Although she didn’t know how many meters deep this place was under the ground, it surely wouldn’t exceed ten thousand meters.
"Have we arrived?" On the surface, Gong Xiao continued to feign confusion and asked the Order Alliance Guard next to her.
Yet as usual, there was no response, not even a nod or a shake of the head. The moment the elevator doors opened, the Order Alliance Guard stepped out, and Gong Xiao hurriedly followed, stepping out of the elevator. As she looked around, she found herself in a foyer-like area with a small footprint surrounded by doors, with the elevator door at her back, and three double doors in each of the other directions, leading to who knows where.
The Order Alliance Guard led her forward. As they approached a silver-white door, a red light swept across the guard’s face, and the next second, the door opened. The guard did not pause and walked straight in, with Gong Xiao following closely behind.
When the red light swept over Gong Xiao, the door lit up with a blinding red light. The Order Alliance Guard who had just entered pressed a green button nearby, and the red light vanished instantly, followed by a mechanical sound from the door.
"Proceed with memory recognition?"
"No."
The Order Alliance Guard uttered a single word with the most indifferent tone. The door fell silent again, and Gong Xiao’s gaze fell upon a vast space, now sure that this was the research facility for the Order Guards!
Within this space stood numerous large square devices. Around these devices, there were glass observation ports, through which Gong Xiao could clearly see people dressed in white, busily working inside, apparently operating the square devices they were stationed at.
None of the individuals inside looked their way, as if their work was all that mattered. Gong Xiao understood then, the glass at the observation ports was one-way. The workers inside couldn’t see outside, but those outside could clearly see them!
Gong Xiao, curious, glanced at the Order Alliance Guard beside her, but resisted her urge. She continued to follow, heading straight to the area ahead, occasionally passing in front of the workers inside. Indeed, just as she thought, no one inside paid her any heed. These were definitely one-way glass; anyone would normally stop to gaze if they saw themselves, but these workers did not.
