Chapter 1355: Chapter 1350: The Fortune-Telling Man
Su Sigui nodded, seeming not to doubt Xu Mengyun’s words, but there was a hint of nonchalance in her attitude. She took the Evolution Crystal from Xu Mengyun’s hand and said inexplicably, "Alright, you’ve repaid what you owed. Sixteen thousand Yajin for this little item, you shouldn’t be at a loss, right? Hurry back."
"What do you mean?" Xu Mengyun’s brow furrowed.
"Human beings may not harm those kids and your companions, but zombies are another story."
"You..."
Xu Mengyun was suddenly at a loss for words. She didn’t care about anything else, picked up a zombie skin, and rushed out the window, dashing toward the Shelter. Had it not been for Su Sigui’s reminder, she might have forgotten that the zombie Li Henian had sent to follow her might vent its anger towards the children in her sudden absence!
Killing those children wouldn’t benefit the strong among humans much, but for the zombies, at the very least, they were a group of fresh food!
Running, she wiped the tears that had overflowed from her eyes. She dared not think of the current state of the children in the Shelter; rather, in her heart, the names of person after person flashed by, names of those who had sacrificed for that tiny bottle of purifier. They had placed all their hopes on her, but in the end, she hadn’t succeeded.
Lihua Yousun, Suzuki Kika, Qing Licang, Li Jinchu, Ishida Shoetsu, Zhong Wenren, Li Chongshan, Jing Qichenghui, He Jin, Stuart Zhuang, West Forest Mo Duoer... One name after another appeared in her heart, including Chinese people, Japanese people, Goryeo people, as well as Lan Ou Europeans and North Americans. Diverse as they were, she could only silently say sorry to them now. Perhaps the purifier in Su Sigui’s hands could also play its biggest role, or even achieve more perfect results.
But no matter what, the hope that those people had placed on her was now shattered. She had the capability to obtain it, but not the strength to guard it!
...
After Xu Mengyun left, Su Sigui did not leave immediately. She twirled the small purifier in her hands, toying with it, curiosity in her eyes towards the tiny item.
After a while, the person who seemed to only exist in her perception had already left. She put away the bottle and said, "Let’s go."
"Yes."
Not far away, three Level 8 New Human Powerhouses nodded and followed Su Sigui downstairs, walking out naturally through the small door on the first floor like ordinary people. People continuously appeared around, opening their clothes over their heads, brushing past Su Sigui back and forth. Everyone’s face bore a look of panic, and the earthquake caused by the clash of Level 8 existences had already stopped. People had started to flee the area.
This had almost become an instinct in people, forcibly engraved into their DNA the day after tomorrow. Whenever a similar situation was detected, it meant that some place had become a zone of danger. These cracks that appeared on the earth were like a sharp knife leaving a hideous scar on the pure face of humanity!
Some shouted loudly to rescue others, a few people working together to pull a survivor dangling on the edge of a crack to safety, while others, less fortunate, did not receive any help. After a long struggle, they gradually lost all their strength, and as their hands let go, they were smashed to pieces at the bottom of the abyss!
There were also people who fought over the remaining supplies at their stalls, which ultimately attracted stronger individuals and led to greater casualties!
The chaos that Su Sigui could see besides her was nothing but chaos, people running aimlessly, giving off a very absurd feeling. They were afraid of something, but they didn’t know what exactly it was. Instinct alone drove them to keep running! Running! Still running!
The expressions on their faces were identical, Su Sigui couldn’t help but laugh, her voice tinged with mockery. A world governed by strength was too cruel, yet ironically, only the strongest among the strong could resolve such situations, a sort of return to the basics.
During this period, Cloud Gorge Base was greatly different from another Cloud Gorge Base from the same time. Compared to that other Cloud Gorge Base, this place was more dilapidated and backward. People who shouldn’t have been there appeared, and those who should have been alive died early. Those who should have been dead were still bouncing around full of life.
Sometimes stepping across small fissures on the ground, Su Sigui and the three persons with her were like moviegoers watching everything in the play but without the right to interfere with the plot. People didn’t recognize her, and though she just watched the changing scenery around her, it had nothing and yet everything to do with her.
"Fortune-telling, ah, fortune-telling! If it’s not accurate, it’s free~"
Suddenly, a completely different voice came from the side. Su Sigui looked over, and on the curb, there sat a man wearing a gray coat. His beard was thick, his eyebrows bushy, and his hair, long and untended, was casually tossed to one side, making it difficult to guess his age.
The gray coat he wore also seemed like it hadn’t been washed in a long while, stained with specks of dirt all over.
"Fortune-telling? Are there still such professions nowadays?"
Su Sigui asked curiously, and there were quite a few survivors around, but no one attempted it upon hearing "if it’s not accurate, it’s free". The other meaning of this phrase was that he did charge for fortune-telling, of course in Yajin, and in such times, only fools would believe in fortune-telling.
"Of course, just making ends meet."
"It’s free if it’s not accurate, right?" Su Sigui asked again.
"Yes, it costs one Yajin per reading, not expensive, right?" the man replied. From his voice, one could tell he was probably in his forties.
Hearing this, Su Sigui couldn’t help but twitch the corner of her eye. One reading, no certainty it was true, and who had seen or would believe in such mystical nonsense? Although one Yajin wasn’t much for her, it was a meal’s worth for the survivors around her. Food was the foundation of their survival, so how could they afford to spend money on such things?
"Kind of a rip-off."
"Miss, you don’t seem like an indecent person, one Yajin should be cheap for you, right? You could give it a try." The man’s eyes held hope, as if he really wanted this potential "sucker" in front of him to try his fortune-telling skills.
"Sure, let’s give it a try."
Su Sigui nodded, took out one Yajin from her pocket, and threw it over.
"What would you like to know?"
The man inquired as he drew a smooth wooden stick from his clothes and began to sketch something seemingly at random on the ground.
