Chapter 1296 - 1291: Final Payment
Chapter 1296: Chapter 1291: Final Payment
In front of an inconspicuous small courtyard, a man, repressing the pain emanating from inside his body, knocked on the large gate of the courtyard. He looked around, seemingly unnoticed by anyone, and let out a slight sigh of relief.
The next moment, the courtyard’s gate opened with a "zzt" sound, revealing an older-looking middle-aged man.
"Here you are."
"Mm."
"Come in."
After a brief exchange, the middle-aged man let the injured person into the courtyard. Inside, including the low houses ahead, there were more than twenty people. Anyone outside would recognize them as the upper echelons of the City of Bright Moon, each one a powerful presence at the Level 8 tier. However, many bore injuries, a far cry from their past glory.
Some were so gravely injured that their lives were threatened, but fortunately, they had been timely treated and kept alive by a thread, waiting for the powerful vitality of Level 8 New Humans to gradually heal them.
The voice of Su Sigui appeared from the man’s perspective, and he could not suppress a trace of shame in his heart.
"Mayor, Qu Hui and Jin Lai have betrayed us, and Luo Wenshu... he’s dead. I’m sorry..."
Su Sigui was silent for a moment. Up to this point, she suddenly realized she hadn’t prepared adequately for many circumstances, such as the intense conflict with the Hidden Dragon Council of the Judgement Association, which she had never anticipated.
Her face showed no expression, except for a fleeting, almost imperceptible emotional flicker when she heard of Luo Wenshu’s death.
Like those outside, she and the people around her had become numb because death always loomed over them. No one knew when they or their comrades might suddenly perish. They were prepared for grief to surge at any moment, repressing it deep within their hearts.
Out of more than thirty Level 8 New Human Powerhouses of the City of Bright Moon, eleven had now died in battle, leaving only twenty-two present. This was a devastating loss.
Although the Hidden Dragon Council and the Judgement Association also suffered losses, theirs were mostly among the Order Defenders, who were akin to robots that could be rebuilt if damaged. But once a real person died, there was no coming back.
"It’s okay."
Su Sigui shook her head at the man, who felt increasingly distressed as he looked at her expressionless face. Where would they go next?
No one knew.
The air at the scene was quite somber. About a minute later, Su Sigui glanced at the gate of the courtyard and said, "It seems everyone has arrived. Let’s go."
The people around quietly gathered their things, with most heading outside and three others moving in the opposite direction.
Leading the group outside, three armored vehicles awaited them, transparent and like Su Sigui, no one spoke. They orderly boarded the three vehicles, and once everyone was aboard, the engines of the armored vehicles roared to life and the convoy set out towards the east of Cloud Gorge Base.
The area was chaotic, and on the streets, they saw copious people in tattered clothes with numb eyes. These people instinctively dodged quickly, not daring to come close at the sight of the armored vehicles.
Under full-speed driving, it didn’t take long for them to reach one of the eastern exits. Like the other gates, these doors were tightly closed, but the armored vehicles paid no heed and continued forward until the soldiers guarding there opened the gates, and the vehicles slowed down slightly.
A woman in the vehicle picked up four large bags prepared in advance and threw them out as they passed a few soldiers at the gate, muttering four words, "Here’s the remaining payment."
The three armored vehicles then left Cloud Gorge Base unobstructed and headed towards Changyuan City.
The gate closed behind them, and a man, apparently an officer, ordered a few soldiers to open the four bags, which were filled with Yajin. A smile appeared on his face, but he quickly suppressed it, sweeping a glance around before speaking, "Today’s events never happened. We’ll split the Yajin evenly among us; everyone will get more than six hundred each, enough to live a lifetime in Cloud Gorge Base."
"I hope you’re not foolish."
The soldiers clearly understood, silently dividing the Yajin from the four large bags among themselves before continuing to guard the gate as if nothing had happened.
And their hearts, at that moment, turned from apprehension to excitement. The six hundred Yajin they received was a fortune to them! Enough for a rich life in Cloud Gorge Base, they couldn’t contain the smiles on their faces.
It seemed like things had settled down, at least that’s what everyone was thinking. But then, an icy female voice suddenly emerged.
"Why do you look so happy?"
Upon hearing this voice, the soldiers’ expressions froze in place.
The officer slowly turned around, the fear evident on his face.
"Level 6!"
The soldiers didn’t think twice and started fleeing for their lives. These were inspectors tasked with monitoring them, each powerful; they were no match for these inspectors being mere Level 2 or 3 soldiers.
But the soldiers didn’t get far before several gleams of cold light flashed by, and the soldiers who had just divided the bounty fell into pools of their own blood, lifeless.
On the other side, Su Sigui and her group, less than two kilometers outside of Cloud Gorge Base, saw many drones and patrolling helicopters overhead, and they were discovered almost immediately.
"Report to headquarters, remnants of the City of Bright Moon spotted, heading east from the Sixth isolation zone towards Changyuan City, requesting instructions."
"Received, Third Group inform other units, do not startle the quarry, wait for further instructions to act."
"Third Group received, the target has noticed us, do we engage?"
Inside Cloud Gorge Base, in a command room, a group of high-ranking officials watched the screen displaying the progress of the three armored vehicles.
"Su Sigui is indeed heading in the direction of Changyuan City."
"That place is full of zombies; they..."
"With Su Sigui’s strength, she won’t overlook Third Group. Since she hasn’t acted, she must be preparing for a decisive battle to the death."
"That’s exactly what I want."
A smile crossed the faces of the officials. Su Sigui planned to set the battlefield in Changyuan City. Although it teemed with zombies left after the previous horde retreated—numbers staggering—if a war broke out there, the destructive force would indeed be terrifying but wouldn’t shake the foundation of Cloud Gorge Base to its core, thus minimizing losses.
Everyone was eager to witness this scene.
