Chapter 128: Chapter 125: Sneaking into Yindan Base_1

The fog grew denser by the minute, shrouding Liang City. The night dyed the originally white haze a rusty red. The sight caused a trembling chill in the hearts of the soldiers on the city wall, who couldn’t shake the terrifying thought of monstrous creatures lurking within the dense fog. As the series of lights along the wall flickered on, the soldiers heaved a sigh of relief.

The dimness of the night was spine-chilling. The engulfing darkness weighed oppressively on everyone’s heart, making it hard to catch breath. Luckily, they weren’t the ones assigned for patrol this night.

The soldiers began to gather, awaiting the arrival of their replacements. Over at Tang Ye’s, he had long readied everything. He gave Ah Fu a last glance, and with a touch of his pocket transferred the Evolution Crystal, extracted from the brain of a Level 2 zombie that they had stumbled upon and killed six days before, to it.

Having evolved to Level 3, this Level 2 Evolution Crystal might not have much effect, and might be described as trying to fill a bucket with a cup of water. It would probably be better off given to Ah Fu to replenish its energy. Seeing Ah Fu accept the Evolution Crystal, Tang Ye turned away, and like a shadow, began moving towards the high walls of Yindan Base.

After Ah Fu swallowed the Evolution Crystal, it promptly collapsed on the ground, commencing its evolution. Its body split into two for yet another time, with disgusting mucus seeping out of it and covering its entire body.

Its body grew visibly bigger. Red bulges began to form on Ah Fu’s back and then burst open to reveal twisted, coarse, rock-like spikes of a blackish-red color.

An open bleeding hole emerged on its head, and two curved horns grew out of it like those on a demon crawling from hell. Similar spikes erupted violently from its arms, hands, and shoulders.

After a while, Ah Fu’s split body conjoined again, yet it remained unconscious, descending towards the form of a Level 3 zombie. But Tang Ye, who had left already, did not see any of it.

After a day’s work of guarding the city, the soldiers were all set to assemble with much chatter and laughter. But none of them noticed the fleeting shadow at the foot of the high wall.

Looking at the height, Tang Ye confirmed the gathering of the soldiers. Then, two tentacles extended from his spine and started climbing it slowly, careful not to alert the soldiers above.

"Will you all stand properly! Or do you not wish to go back and rest?"

The soldiers assembled, with the chatter continuing unabated. In response, a sergeant walked to the front with hands on his back and loudly reprimanded them.

At his voice, the boisterous crowd of soldiers instantly fell silent, standing in attention, waiting for their replacement’s arrival.

Suddenly, from an unoccupied alley, a gloved hand grasped onto the eave of the wall and its owner gracefully ascended with no noise.

Tang Ye turned his head to look at the cluster of soldiers, then crouched down, extending a bone spike that he plunged on the middle of the wall. Sliding his body down, Tang Ye was hanging under it in a jiffy.

After glancing at the ground, Tang Ye retracted his bone spike, and he stealthily landed on the ground. Convinced he’d evaded notice from the soldiers, he lowered his guard.

Just as he was taking one step, a handgun was pointed towards his head out of nowhere.

"Who are you? What are you skulking around for?"

Tang Ye glanced sidelong at the nearby cigarette butt, feeling a touch of helplessness. He hadn’t expected soldiers to be slacking off in circumstances such as these.

But having been discovered now, there was absolutely no chance of this soldier surviving. Without uttering a word, a tendril grew from the back of Tang Ye’s neck and quietly slithered around the soldier’s neck.

Due to darkness and absence of any light source around, the soldier did not observe any abnormality.

"Speak! Are you a mute?"

Seeing Tang Ye stay silent, the soldier couldn’t help but raise his gun a notch. Despite being dwarfed by Tang Ye’s height, he held the upper hand due to his firearm. Even a mutant like Tang Ye couldn’t withstand a lead bullet.

The crimson tendril twisted into a loop in the darkness and aimed at the back of the soldier’s neck. Tang Ye’s eyes flashed a fierce light and the tendril instantly coiled tightly around the soldier’s neck. With a swift jerk, the tendril squeezed the soldier’s throat beyond recognition.

"What a nuisance!"

Tang Ye growled irritably. He grabbed the hair on the dead soldier’s head and began dragging the corpse towards the base’s interior.

Spotting an artillery pit coincidentally, likely a remnant of an unsteady clearing effort against the zombies prior, Tang Ye casually tossed the body into it and continued towards the Yindan Base.

Inside the Yindan Base appeared surprisingly similar to the peace time before the Apocalypse, mainly due to the restored power supply system, allowing the survivors to have normal electricity usage.

Walking slowly on the streets, Tang Ye felt a vague sinking feeling. Unaccountably, seeing such a scene in the base, he couldn’t help but feel mournful.

Chen Chaoyang had described the scene inside the base to him beforehand, but only now did Tang Ye realize that what he had imagined paled in comparison to the harsh reality.

He initially thought the survivors were simply starving, but now it appeared that he was overly naive. He saw survivors walking aimlessly around the streets, their faces pale and devoid of vigor, similar to the savage zombies outside the base.

Some were lying on the ground, their eyes wide open, staring blankly at the sky, others frenziedly dug the earth around a peeled tree in an attempt to find worms or bugs for replenishing their energy.

There were even some wild enough to approach a woman, knife in hand, hunger evident in their eyes. However, before they could put their plans into action, they were stopped and brutally assaulted by a soldier and were dragged to an unknown location.

Living a numb existence in the apocalypse, their life was brimming with despair with no hint of hope.

Surveying his surroundings, Tang Ye couldn’t fathom the purpose of Yindan Base. Was it not a survivor base? Why then were the survivors living in such squalor?

What was the point of establishing this base? It might as well be destroyed altogether!

The streets were full of survivors. They huddled together, moving in and out of the buildings on both sides. With so many people, it should’ve been lively. But the area was eerily silent. Seeing Tang Ye in his mask approaching them, they barely spared him a glance before returning to their activities.

People wearing face masks during the day was a common sight now, hardly a strange incident. They wouldn’t bother suspecting a masked individual, no matter what their intentions. After all, it wasn’t their problem.

Given their current state of being unable to even secure a meal, they didn’t have the luxury of spending time on a masked stranger, regardless of his abnormal height. They could easily attribute that to his being a mutant.
