Chapter 1263: Chapter 1258: Goodbye, United District 1
He placed his hand in front of Jiang Chentong’s nose, and before even feeling his breath, Yan Jie noticed that Jiang’s temperature was several degrees lower than that of a normal person, and moreover, this temperature was slowly slipping away.
Meanwhile, Yan Jie’s actions had attracted the attention of others, Bai Huipeng, Huang Quanjiu, Xu Haishui hurried over, and Gong Xiao, being a zombie herself, hardly needed to check to realize that a person was dead or alive, could tell at a glance whether a person was dead or alive.
"He’s already dead," said Gong Xiao, her tone very flat, simply flat, and it was impossible to discern her exact emotions, leaving a palpable silence among the group.
"Dead?" Yan Jie was stunned when he heard this response; he too had verified that Jiang Chentong was no longer breathing, completely dead!
Yet, the answer left him unable to react, how could Jiang possibly be dead? Just moments ago, Jiang had joked with him, speaking as if he had just narrowly escaped a disaster.
In Yan Jie’s mind, the conversation from a few hours ago began to resurface as if he were traveling through time, returning to that moment. It had to be said that surviving a great disaster brought a peculiar sense of relief.
"Hehe, we were so close to getting ’boxed lunches.’ I’m still young; if I really died, I wouldn’t be able to experience getting a wife and starting a new family,"
"Same here, but it’s good enough to be alive after coming out, it’s just a pity Ruan Chao’en got away."
Having escaped from Ruan Chao’en, the two of them had developed a life-saving bond, and their relationship had further improved. They had even made a pact to have a good drink afterwards, as with their New Human status, they would enjoy high social standing anywhere, of course, provided it was within human society.
But, with several high-level zombies nearby, it seemed not impossible to set a table in the streets of the deserted zombie-infested city. It’s just that everything happened so suddenly.
Everyone present, both humans and zombies, fell into a silent reverence. Yan Jie gazed at Jiang Chentong’s face, as if all memories had frozen at a few hours earlier. Unawares, his fists had clenched tight, and a glimmer of vengeance flashed across his eyes.
"Ruan Chao’en!"
He repeated this name in his heart, vowing to avenge Jiang Chentong!
"Already dead..." Chen Zhou’an muttered to himself from the side; they had seen many scenes like this before. He still remembered the melancholy and panic in his heart the first time he had seen such a sight. Living to this day, they had become accustomed, death could appear at any moment beside them, and all they could do was feel the sorrow within.
No one knew who would be the next to die in this apocalyptic world.
"Let’s bury his body."
Tang Ye quietly suggested, having guessed it would end this way.
No one responded, and without a word, they dug a hole in the ground with bare hands around Jiang Chentong’s body, buried him, and placed a simple grave marker. It bore only his name, devoid of his history, and he would no longer have a presence in the future. Everything about him ceased at this moment, leaving only the faintest trace of a man named Jiang Chentong in the dust of history.
In Tang Ye’s heart, one thing became clear. When the body of a creature turns ashen, it loses all ability to move and think, becoming nothing but a corpse.
He noticed that each person’s color was slightly different. Taking Bai Huipeng and Huang Quanjiu as examples, the colors on their bodies were the same, but mixed with different amounts of other colors. What these represented, or their density, seemed to be linked to their levels.
Bai Huipeng was a Level 7 New Human, while Huang Quanjiu was Level 6. The concentration of color in his body seemed to be less because of this.
As for Ah Fu and the other New Humans, the colors manifested in their bodies were different from zombies. Although zombies could be considered dead, they displayed colors, albeit different, which were easily distinguishable. Similarly, they were combinations of the original color with a new, unnamed color.
Like how blue mixed with green becomes cyan or teal, and red mixed with yellow becomes pink.
Evolved zombies and these New Humans were in such a state. Though they were new colors, no matter which original color they were combined with, it was difficult to determine exactly what color they were or to give them a specific name, yet they could easily be distinguished.
Pink, lime green; those are colors, combinations of colors, recognizable at a glance.
Tang Ye quickly differentiated the colors represented by the zombies and New Humans. He also discovered that after being able to see previously invisible colors, his eyes seemed to have become ’Eyes of Fire,’ allowing him to swiftly discern the species of an individual just by observing the colors on their bodies, without relying on perception.
Of course, this required Tang Ye to observe more diverse creatures, enriching his experience of "seeing."
A breeze blew from the distance, bringing with it a hint of freshness and the scent of spring. All things were awakening, like newborns radiating vigorous vitality. Yet among them, the atmosphere was oppressive, not a word spoken, and the barely significant drizzle of spring rain dotted everyone’s hair without truly soaking in, staying just briefly.
Tang Ye’s gaze shifted to the distance; among the hazy colors of the air, he could faintly make out the outline of Longyang City. He knew they were not far from Longyang City now, presumably in some outskirts, close to the city but far from the United District.
Thinking of the United District, Tang Ye thought of the Peace Party, the superpower he had built from scratch. Initially, it was a minor survivor enclave in Lin City, which under his leadership had gradually grown, eventually controlling nearly five million people and ten thousand square kilometers of the entire United District.
Like his own child, it grew stronger little by little right before his eyes, becoming independent. In the future, it would grow even more powerful, possessing more people and land. Sadly, it was dead now, filled with so much of his hard work. Remembering it, Tang Ye felt an overwhelming sadness.
He sighed deeply, his eyes melancholic, as if pondering something.
