Chapter 1172: Chapter 117: Bandit Su Sigui
Over Cloud Gorge Base, the alarm had grown more and more deafening. After a short while, people saw a huge, irregular ring rise around the base. It ascended a hundred meters into the sky before stopping. The buildings on the ground were instantly enveloped by the enormous shadow cast by the ring. As the first ring rose, the second followed suit, rising slowly, and then the third and fourth, up to a total of seven rings, each reaching higher than the last, swiftly taking over half of the airspace above Cloud Gorge Base. It appeared almost like a miracle, with countless turbines spewing blue flames beneath each ring.
The survivors who had just arrived at Cloud Gorge Base did not know what those were and looked on with confusion. In contrast, the long-term residents had understood upon seeing the massive rings ascend that an onslaught of a two million-strong zombie horde was an exceedingly grave matter.
The seven rings were not part of Cloud Gorge Base’s defense system; in fact, they were living spaces for people. Generally, they were inhabited by the powerful and influential, those with absolute economic strength, and families that include such powerful individuals.
In Cloud Gorge Base, these gigantic rings were referred to as the Sky Continent, a place everyone in Cloud Gorge Base aspired to live. It was where food was least scarce across the entire base, and during a zombie horde attack, the "Sky Continent" had its own independent energy shield and even more resilient anti-zombie walls, hovering in the sky!
Normally, if there was no zombie horde attack, this "Sky Continent" would remain twenty meters above the ground. But under circumstances like today’s, it would rise two hundred meters into the sky. With magnetic levitation technology, it could not leave Cloud Gorge Base, but it could remain suspended in the air for up to four years within the base. Furthermore, once the base’s outer defenses and energy shield were breached, the first to suffer would be the people on the ground, whereas, the "Sky Continent" could sustain most people with its artificial ecosystem and ensure the cycle of a simple human society structure.
Should the city on the ground of Cloud Gorge Base fall, the military forces atop the "Sky Continent" could also use these four years to clear the zombies below and then restore the base. However, this scenario was highly unlikely to happen. Cloud Gorge Base’s greatest advantage was its massive population. Even if the base reached such a dire state and recovered, it would still compare to those superpowers.
On the streets, a great number of soldiers dressed in black military uniforms were converging toward the East Zombie Wall. On the wall, countless soldiers had already deployed their external exoskeleton combat suits from their packs, covering their entire bodies with layers of steel. In just a short span of time, many forces, large and small within Cloud Gorge Base, had gathered here.
Elsewhere, a soldier quickly climbed up the stairs from the ground level to a ranking officer and whispered into his ear, "Officer Li, the mayor of the City of Bright Moon has arrived as well."
"Hmm?"
The officer referred to as Officer Li was startled for a moment, then looked in the direction the soldier was pointing. There, in a location stretching several kilometers, was a group of soldiers wearing exoskeleton combat suits interwoven with silver and dark purple stripes—these were troops from the City of Bright Moon. Leading the troops was a woman in a black leather coat with her hands in her pockets, looking into the distance.
She had a doll-like face with a loli style, looking quite young, probably about sixteen or seventeen. However, in this post-apocalyptic world, one could not take a New Human’s apparent age at face value - their real age had to be considered. But even with such a youthful face, she bore an expression more mature than that of a forty-year-old man, giving her a very distinctive aura.
Although he was quite far away, Officer Li, being a Level 6 New Human himself, recognized the woman in one glance—it was Su Sigui!
"This thief is here too; I thought nothing would have to do with her," the man known as Officer Li said, with a hint of sarcastic disdain. His voice wasn’t loud; normally, someone fifty meters away wouldn’t be able to hear him. However, Su Sigui, who was several kilometers away, appeared to hear it and glanced in his direction. Officer Li could not see the expression on her face from such a distance, but he quickly averted his gaze, trying not to meet Su Sigui’s eyes.
From his tone, one could discern his displeasure towards Su Sigui. In Cloud Gorge Base, many referred to Su Sigui as mayor, but she had another nickname, "thief," as Officer Li just called her.
The origin of this moniker came from those who despised Su Sigui for toppling their benefit chains. There was no particular reason for it, other than the fact that shortly after arriving at Cloud Gorge Base, Su Sigui aggressively took control of the South, West, and Scenic districts. It was an outright robbery!
Even decision-making areas and Dragon’s Lair Council’s territories were seized by Su Sigui. Both factions wanted to challenge the City of Bright Moon. First, because the City of Bright Moon was the only superpower in Cloud Gorge Base led by a Level 7 New Human, and second, because the City of Bright Moon’s technological power was not inferior to that of the Decision Council or the Dragon’s Lair Council—in some aspects, it was even superior.
Thus, the territories stolen could not be taken back, and anyone attempting to play political tough with the City of Bright Moon found that its people could out-tough them. Hence, Su Sigui was often called a thief.
Despite his irritation with Su Sigui, Officer Li felt relieved. Facing a two-million-zombie horde, and although he had withstood many before, he had never dealt with over six hundred thousand at once. Having a Level 7 New Human in charge certainly alleviated some pressure.
Yet, just as Officer Li had this thought, he turned his head and saw that Su Sigui had turned around and... simply walked away?
Officer Li’s expression froze as he watched the direction in which only a large group of the City of Bright Moon’s soldiers stood rigidly.
On Su Sigui’s side, she took out her phone, opened a communication app, and looked at some pictures someone had sent her. The photos were taken from high above, showing buildings covered in huge swathes of vegetation, and the streets between buildings swarming with zombies!
Among them were several giant zombies, nearly ten meters tall, and just by looking at the photos one could feel the oppressive force coming right at them!
"Mayor, it’s about time. The Decision Council’s calculation is the same as ours, approximately two million six hundred thousand," read the message she opened.
Looking at this message, a strange look flickered in Su Sigui’s eyes.
