Chapter 279: Adam’s reply
Chapter: Adam’s reply
---
The Chapter opens with Adam frozen in place, still processing Ani’s heartfelt confession.
Although he had suspected what she might say, hearing her speak so openly and courageously had taken him by surprise.
He never imagined she would be the one to make the first move.
Before Adam can muster a response, a telepathic nudge from Sona on his shoulder pulls him out of his thoughts.
"Lord Adam," she says playfully, "I think you should stop staring at Ani and pay more attention to your surroundings."
Startled, Adam glances away from Ani and surveys the train compartment.
His stomach drops as he realizes that nearly every passenger is watching them intently.
Their faces are alight with curiosity, some even leaning forward to hear better. Ani, too lost in her own thoughts, hasn’t noticed the audience yet.
Beside him, Ani fiddles nervously with her fingers, anxiety written all over her face.
Her heart pounds as she awaits Adam’s response. What is he going to say? she wonders, her mind spiraling. She’s too preoccupied to realize the growing attention they’ve attracted.
Adam, keenly aware of the staring passengers, shifts uncomfortably. He glances back at Ani, who is still lost in thought.
Finally, she follows his gaze, turning her head to see what has caught his attention. Her eyes widen in shock as she notices the sea of faces directed at them.
A wave of embarrassment washes over her. I didn’t even think about where we were... she thinks, her cheeks flushing a deep pink. She quickly averts her gaze, her hands gripping her lap tightly.
Her blush only deepens as the realization hits her—she’d confessed her feelings to Adam in front of an entire train car.
Adam notices Ani’s mortification and feels a pang of guilt. She’s so brave to have shared her feelings, even if she wasn’t thinking about the setting. I can’t let her feel this way, he thinks.
Taking a deep breath, Adam decides to act. Still holding Ani’s hand, he rises from his seat, his movement drawing even more attention from the onlookers. Ani looks up at him, startled.
As Adam stands, Sona’s voice echoes in his mind again. "Lord Adam, don’t you think you owe Ani a response? She’s been so brave, and she deserves the same courage from you."
Before Adam can reply, Tayo chimes in. "Sona’s right, Lord Adam. You can’t just walk away. Show Ani how you truly feel."
Adam lets out a small sigh, his heart heavy with the weight of their words. Initially, he had planned to lead Ani to another compartment, away from prying eyes.
But now, he realizes that avoiding the situation would only undermine Ani’s courage. She had confessed her feelings in public, and he should do the same.
He turns to look at Ani, who is on the verge of standing. Her nervous eyes search his face for clues, her thoughts a whirlwind of doubt and insecurity. Did I rush things? she wonders. Does Adam even feel the same way? What if this is a mistake?
Adam meets Ani’s gaze, his expression soft but determined. "Ani," he begins, his voice steady. "You’ve done something very unfair."
Ani blinks in confusion, her heart sinking. Unfair? she thinks, her chest tightening. Is he going to reject me?
Around them, the other passengers lean in closer, their curiosity palpable. The tension in the air is thick as Ani tries to decipher Adam’s words.
Before she can spiral further, Adam continues, his tone carrying a hint of playfulness. "You’ve stolen my moment. Confessions are supposed to be the guy’s job, you know. I had it all planned out—how I was going to tell you. But you beat me to it, and here, of all places."
Ani’s breath catches in her throat as his words sink in. What is he saying? she wonders, her confusion slowly giving way to realization.
Adam smiles at her, his grip on her hand tightening slightly. "But you know what?" he says, lowering himself onto one knee in the middle of the train car. "If you can make your confession here, in front of all these people, then so can I."
The train compartment falls silent as Adam kneels before Ani, still holding her hand.
Ani’s eyes widen in shock, her mind struggling to process what’s happening.
The other passengers are equally stunned, their whispers fading as they watch the scene unfold.
Adam looks up at Ani, his gaze unwavering. "Ani," he says, his voice filled with sincerity, "I’ve liked you since the first day of school. No—if I’m being honest, I’ve loved you since the moment I first saw you. There’s something about you that’s always drawn me in—your kindness, your strength, your laughter. Being with you makes everything else feel... right."
Ani’s heart pounds so loudly she can barely hear anything else. Tears well up in her eyes as Adam’s words wash over her.
She never imagined he felt this deeply for her, and hearing it now, in front of everyone, leaves her speechless.
Adam smiles softly, his thumb brushing against her hand. "So, Ani," he continues, his tone warm, "if you’ll let me, I’d like to stand by your side. In happiness, in sadness, in everything. I want to be with you."
The compartment erupts into quiet applause and murmurs as Adam rises to his feet, still holding Ani’s hand.
Everyone is watching them both and they are also silently listening to this entire conversation.
Ani, overwhelmed with emotion, can only nod, her smile radiant through her tears.
Sona and Tayo exchange triumphant glances from Adam’s shoulders. "I’d say that was a success," Sona remarks, her tone smug. Tayo nods in agreement. "Ani is lucky to have someone like Lord Adam."
The train continues its journey, but for Adam and Ani, time feels suspended. They sit back down, their hands still clasped, their hearts lighter than ever.
The Chapter ends with Ani resting her head on Adam’s shoulder, their bond stronger than ever as they look forward to the next Chapter of their lives together.
