Chapter 247: Final Task

Chapter: Final Task

The abandoned building lay in silence, the faint sound of a distant wind brushing through its cracks.

Inside, Adam sat calmly on a worn-out chair, his piercing gaze locked onto Krish, who stood a few steps away.

Krish had just finished relaying the President’s compliance with Adam’s orders, and the weight of the moment was evident on his face.

Adam slowly rose from his chair, the sound of its legs scraping against the concrete floor echoing in the room.

He took deliberate steps toward Krish and Emily, his imposing presence causing both of them to instinctively step back.

Fear lingered in their eyes, though Krish tried to maintain a semblance of composure. Emily, however, found it harder to mask her unease, her body stiff as she shuffled further away.

Standing before them, Adam’s voice carried both authority and assurance.

"I want both of you to live for The Union and the common people," he began, his tone steady. "What you do in your personal lives is of no concern to me. I grant you full liberty and freedom in that regard. But know this—I will ensure that neither of you uses your powers in any way that causes harm."

The words struck a chord. Both Krish and Emily nodded in understanding, though the gravity of his declaration was clear.

Adam turned his attention to Emily, his sharp eyes studying her closely. "By the way," he asked, "what do you do? You don’t seem very old."

Emily hesitated, her throat catching momentarily as she exhaled deeply. Gathering her composure, she replied, "I’m a college student."

Adam’s eyebrows raised slightly, the surprise clear on his face. "A college student," he repeated thoughtfully, before adding, "And Samuel? Did he study with you as well?"

Emily paused, her gaze dropping momentarily before she answered. "No," she said, her voice soft. "He found me—or perhaps it’s more accurate to say that he sought me out. He told me he would bring me powerful opponents so that I could hone my skills. That’s why I chose to follow him."

Adam absorbed her words, his expression unreadable. After a moment, he gave a curt nod and said, "I can’t guarantee much, but I can promise you this—if you ever find yourself in trouble, we will come to your aid."

Emily’s eyes widened slightly, reflecting a mixture of surprise and relief. Adam continued, "In return, all I ask is that you work for The Union. We won’t ask you to do anything unethical or force you into tasks you don’t wish to perform."

Emily locked eyes with Adam, searching for any sign of deception. What she saw instead was sincerity, a genuineness that seemed to cut through her lingering fear.

For the first time, she felt as though Adam’s intentions were honest, unclouded by ulterior motives.

Adam, however, did not soften his stance. "But let me be clear," he added, his tone sharpening. "I cannot overlook the mistakes of your past. That’s why you’re wearing this collar."

Emily’s attention shifted to the white, rubber-like band secured around her neck. In its center, a blue crystal glowed faintly, pulsing rhythmically. For the first time, she became fully aware of its presence.

Noticing her focus, Adam glanced at the collar briefly before turning his gaze toward Sona, who hovered nearby. Without a word, Sona understood his unspoken command. Through telepathy, she reached out to Pratham.

"Make the collars invisible," she instructed.

Within moments, Pratham executed the task, and the collars adorning Emily and Krish’s necks vanished from sight. The sudden disappearance left both of them startled, their hands instinctively moving to where the bands had been moments ago.

"Where... did they go?" Emily asked, her voice laced with confusion.

Krish looked equally perplexed, running his fingers across his neck in disbelief.

Adam remained silent, observing their reactions. His silence carried an air of finality, the unspoken understanding that while the collars were now hidden, their presence and purpose remained.

Adam stood still, his sharp gaze fixed on Emily and Krish as they both reached instinctively for their necks where the collars had vanished. Their surprised reactions brought a faint smile to his lips, one that carried a mix of authority and reassurance.

"Don’t worry," Adam said, his voice calm yet firm. "The collars haven’t gone anywhere. They’re still on your necks but are now invisible. This is so you can walk freely among the common people without drawing unwanted attention. It’s for your own safety."

Hearing this, Emily and Krish exchanged uneasy glances before their eyes returned to Adam. The weight of his words was undeniable.

Adam’s gaze shifted to Krish, who immediately stiffened under the scrutiny.

Sensing Adam’s focus, Krish instinctively took a step back, his nervousness visible in his body language.

Adam walked toward him, closing the distance, and his commanding presence made Krish visibly uncomfortable.

"What did you do before you gained these powers?" Adam asked, his voice calm but probing. "And before you met Samuel?"

Krish blinked in surprise, caught off guard by the question. He hesitated briefly, trying to steady himself. "I... I was a schoolteacher," he finally said.

Adam’s eyebrows rose slightly, and a look of disbelief flashed across his face. "A schoolteacher?" he repeated, his tone laced with skepticism.

Krish noticed the doubt in Adam’s expression and immediately felt the need to defend himself. He straightened his posture and said, "Yes, I know I don’t look like it, but I was a teacher. A good one, too."

Adam remained silent, his expression betraying his thoughts. How could someone as erratic as Krish possibly have been responsible for teaching children? The idea seemed absurd.

Krish noticed Adam’s reaction and felt a pang of offense. Raising his hand slightly in protest, he said, "I know what you’re thinking, but let me tell you—I was a great teacher. I never showed favoritism among my students."

Adam’s sharp gaze remained fixed on Krish as he replied, "Your actions so far don’t support that claim."

The blunt statement silenced Krish momentarily. He looked away, his shoulders slumping slightly. After a pause, he muttered, "I’m human too. And when someone gains more than they ever expected... sometimes they act in ways even they can’t understand."

Adam didn’t respond immediately. He stood there, his piercing eyes studying Krish. The room felt heavier in the silence that followed, as though the weight of Krish’s words hung in the air.

Breaking the silence, Krish continued, his tone laced with remorse. "I was happy. Even after I gained these powers, I was content living my normal life. But then one day, I met Samuel. He gave me an ultimatum: join him or die."

Krish’s voice faltered for a moment, but he pushed through, his gaze dropping to the floor. "I didn’t want to die. Before that day, I had barely used my powers. But when Samuel made that offer, I chose to follow him. That’s when I lost my way."

Adam listened intently, his face devoid of emotion. While his expression didn’t betray any belief in Krish’s story, his eyes conveyed an intensity that made Krish feel exposed.

"You don’t believe me," Krish said, forcing a weak smile. "I wouldn’t believe me either. Sometimes, I still wonder how I ended up like this."

Adam’s sharp eyes narrowed slightly as he raised his hand, signaling the conversation was over. "I don’t think I need to know more about you," he said coldly.

Krish’s smile faded, but he offered no argument. He nodded slightly, acknowledging the finality of Adam’s words.

Adam took a step back, his gaze resting on Krish and Emily. His voice carried an air of finality as he said, "I’m arranging for you to return home."

Both Emily and Krish exchanged surprised glances, clearly not expecting such an announcement. Krish hesitated before speaking, his voice laced with uncertainty. "But Master, didn’t you say we needed to work for the Union?"

Adam turned his calm yet firm gaze toward Krish. "Don’t worry. For now, you can go home. We will inform you when there is work for the Union. Until then, live your daily lives. We won’t disturb you unless it’s necessary."

Emily glanced at Krish, her expression reflecting her apprehension. She hesitated but finally asked, "How will we even get home?"

Her timid question brought a faint smile to Adam’s face. He turned toward Sona, who was hovering nearby, and gestured toward her. "Sona will assist you. She’s your senior within the Union, and you must show her the respect she deserves."

Both Krish and Emily shifted their attention to Sona, who was now glaring at them with a look of cold disapproval. It was clear to them that Sona wasn’t thrilled about this arrangement. The tension was palpable as they realized their actions so far hadn’t won her over.

Hovering closer to Emily, Sona’s voice dripped with disdain. "Let me make one thing clear: I don’t like either of you. Don’t expect anything from me. I’m only doing this for Lord Adam."

Before Emily could respond, Sona grabbed her shoulder, and the two vanished in a flash of light.

Krish, left behind, watched the scene unfold with wide eyes, surprise evident in his expression. Turning to Adam, he stammered, "You... you even know where we live? How?"

Nervousness crept into his voice, as Samuel had been the only one privy to such details.

Adam’s smile grew slightly, but there was an edge of authority in his tone as he replied, "I’ve already told you, Krish. I know everything."

Krish opened his mouth to respond, but before he could say a word, he noticed Ninja approaching. His movements were swift and deliberate.

One moment, Ninja was across the room; the next, he vanished and reappeared at Krish’s side.

However, just as Ninja was about to teleport Krish, Adam raised a hand. "Wait, Ninja," he commanded, his voice calm but firm.

Ninja halted immediately, his hand resting on Krish’s shoulder.

Krish glanced at his severed arm, the empty sleeve a stark reminder of what he had lost. Despite Adam healing the wound, the sight still unsettled him. Adam’s gaze shifted to Phantom, who hovered silently nearby.

"Phantom," Adam said, turning toward her, "can you fix his arm?"

Phantom floated closer, her ethereal presence exuding calm assurance. "I can, Lord Adam," she replied, her voice serene. "But I’ll need the original arm to do so."

Adam nodded thoughtfully. "It should still be where it fell. Not much time has passed for it to have deteriorated."

Phantom inclined her head in acknowledgment before disappearing in a shimmer of light.

The room grew still as everyone waited. Moments later, Phantom reappeared, holding Krish’s severed arm suspended in mid-air.

The arm, now pale and lifeless, seemed almost unnatural. Krish stared at it, his expression a mix of hope and disbelief. Adam, too, examined the severed limb before turning back to Phantom.

"Will it work? The arm looks like it’s in bad shape," Adam said, his tone carrying a hint of concern.

Phantom reassured him with a confident nod. "Don’t worry, Lord Adam. It will reattach perfectly."

As Phantom prepared to proceed, the Chapter ends, leaving the room filled with anticipation and Krish clinging to a fragile hope for restoration.
