Chapter 169: The Weight of the Night

Chapter: The Weight of the Night

The room was quiet, save for the faint hum of electronic devices and the subtle rustle of wings as Sona and Tayo hovered gently near Adam.

The sun had fully set, and its last golden rays had long disappeared, leaving the sky blanketed in inky darkness.

Outside the window, the evening stretched on in silence, the world beyond lost in shadow.

Inside the room, the lights flickered on automatically, casting a dim, artificial glow across the walls.

The light pooled softly around Adam, who sat motionless in his chair. His face was turned toward the bed, his expression partially obscured by the shadow of his lowered head.

Both hands were folded tightly atop his knees as he sank deeper into thought, the weight of the day pressing heavily on his shoulders.

Behind him, the faint outline of his desk and computer sat in the background, an almost forgotten presence in his moment of isolation.

Sona and Tayo, his silent companions, hovered a short distance away. Their wings beat softly, the faint sound filling the air like whispers, but neither of them spoke.

They knew better. They could sense the turmoil within Adam, the heavy thoughts swirling through his mind like a storm. They waited patiently, giving him space to process the situation.

Adam sat still, the quiet a sharp contrast to the turmoil inside him. What should I do?

The question kept echoing, unanswered, gnawing at him. He couldn’t ignore what had happened—the President’s speech, the government’s declaration, the growing threat to people like him. How long can I keep this secret? How long until they find me?

The silence was broken suddenly by the sharp sound of Adam’s phone ringing. The jarring noise cut through the quiet like a blade, pulling Adam back into the present.

His shoulders tensed as the sound echoed around the room. For a moment, he hesitated, reluctant to answer. All he wanted was to be alone—to think, to breathe—but the persistent ringing wouldn’t allow it.

Sighing heavily, Adam reached for the phone. The screen lit up, displaying a familiar face—Pratham’s avatar. The digital figure looked almost lifelike, its blue skin glowing faintly against the black background.

Adam’s brows furrowed as he stared at it for a moment. Then, exhaling again, he swiped to answer the call.

"What is it, Pratham?" Adam asked, his tone heavier than usual.

Pratham’s avatar appeared more clearly now, standing tall and composed on the screen.

His head bowed slightly, a gesture of respect tinged with apology. "Forgive me, Lord Adam," Pratham said, his voice steady yet cautious. "I didn’t mean to disturb you."

Adam lifted one hand, waving off the apology. "It’s fine," he said, though his tone remained muted. "I know you’re only worried about me."

Pratham nodded, his expression softening with relief. "Yes, Lord Adam. Your safety is my priority."

Pratham hesitated for a brief moment before continuing. "Lord Adam," he said, his voice growing more earnest, "I would not trouble you at this hour if it wasn’t necessary. But I have a request... something that requires your approval."

Adam’s brows lifted slightly, curiosity flickering across his face. "A request?" he repeated, his voice soft but edged with intrigue. "What kind of request?"

Pratham straightened his posture, his expression sharpening with focus. "I would like permission to monitor the government facilities," he explained. "To investigate the technology they’re using to detect Power Holders."

Adam’s gaze narrowed as he processed Pratham’s words. The request caught him off guard, but the more he thought about it, the more sense it made. "You want to find out how their detection devices work?" Adam asked, his tone thoughtful.

"Yes, Lord Adam," Pratham confirmed, nodding firmly. "Without understanding their technology, we cannot fully prepare for what’s to come."

Adam leaned back slightly in his chair, his hands falling back onto his knees. His gaze drifted toward the dimly lit ceiling as his thoughts churned.

Pratham’s suggestion was logical—necessary, even. If they wanted to stay ahead of the government’s efforts, they needed information. Knowledge of the enemy’s tools was their best chance at survival.

Sona and Tayo, still hovering nearby, exchanged a glance but remained silent, respecting Adam’s space. They could see the gears turning in his mind, the weight of the decision settling on his shoulders.

After a long pause, Adam finally spoke, his voice calm but decisive. "It’s a good idea, Pratham."

Pratham’s avatar straightened with pride, his expression brightening slightly. "Thank you, Lord Adam," he said, his tone carrying a note of determination.

Adam’s hands slowly returned to their position on his knees, his posture still but resolute. Though his mind remained clouded with unanswered questions, a small spark of clarity began to emerge.

Pratham’s plan could work. It was a step forward—one they desperately needed.

Pratham, sensing that Adam was deep in thought, waited patiently for further instructions. His avatar stood motionless on the screen, his expression one of unwavering loyalty.

The room fell silent again, save for the faint hum of the phone and the quiet beat of Sona and Tayo’s wings.

Adam didn’t speak immediately, his mind continuing to turn over Pratham’s words. The government thinks they can hunt us down. But we’re not powerless. We’ll find a way.

Sona and Tayo remained where they were, their glowing forms casting faint shadows on the walls.

They listened intently to Adam and Pratham’s conversation, their loyalty and trust in Adam unwavering. They knew the weight he carried, the responsibility he bore, but they also knew he would find a way through it.

As the silence stretched on, the faint flicker of the phone screen lit up Adam’s face, his expression unreadable but determined. Pratham’s avatar remained present, waiting patiently for Adam’s next command.

And so the Chapter came to a close, with Adam sitting in the quiet of his room, his thoughts filled with plans and uncertainties.

The night stretched on outside, its darkness mirroring the challenges that lay ahead. But amidst the silence and shadow, there was a glimmer of hope—a plan beginning to take shape.

For Adam, the fight had only just begun.
