Chapter 84 - 83 The New Liberation Front
Chapter 84: Chapter 83 The New Liberation Front
Wei Tianyang cut out of objective reality and "teleported" from Qiayang City to the Lijiang Region.
This place was very unfamiliar to him. The state of infrastructure in Chicken Snake Country was poor. Beyond the towns, the sides of the highways were lined with nothing but undulating barren hills and unmanaged deep forests. It was only with the help of a mobile phone map that he was able to find a small town 6 kilometers from Linjiang City: Jiqiu.
This town was a key logistics support area for the New Liberation Front and was merely a town shaped like a single line. There was just one street with buildings lined up on both sides, the important places being a hospital, residential houses, a leather goods factory, a department store, and an elementary school. Apart from that, there wasn’t much else of interest.
Just upon entering the outskirts of Jiqiu, Wei saw many soldiers busily loading ammunition boxes onto trucks. Similarly, many wounded were being transported back from the direction of Linjiang. Most of them would die within a week due to the shortage of medical supplies.
Wei Tianyang’s intelligence on the New Liberation Front’s strongholds all came from Du Yan. Her reconnaissance troops were spread across Chicken Snake Country, and Li Fei, who was her student, devised strategic plans in much the same way as her.
When the soldiers saw Wei Tianyang, they exchanged glances and surreptitiously monitored his every move.
He noticed all this behavior, and although the soldiers were not in uniform, only wearing casual clothes, the Guerrilla Dead could still easily differentiate who was a regular civilian and who was a warrior through decades of experience.
He strode into the only main street in Jiqiu, and under the watchful eyes of many, walked directly into the elementary school.
After the outbreak of the civil war, most schools in Chicken Snake Country had suspended classes. This school was currently serving as the rear command post for the New Liberation Front’s attack on Linjiang.
On the small playground, there were freshly buried mortar shell craters, and the west side exterior wall of the sole teaching building had several breaches. After the New Liberation Front took over Jiqiu, they had not had the time to repair it, only managing to temporarily seal it off with a few yellow caution tapes around the holes.
Wei Tianyang had just thought to go upstairs when he was surrounded by four soldiers. Seeing that he was just a kid, they were even less relaxed, fearing he might be a little spy from the conservative side.
Besides, being situated in a location that was not near any village in the front and no shops at the back, and exactly as a supply station for the Linjiang front line, a 16-year-old boy coming on foot was far too suspicious.
Wei, seeing the aggressive look on the approaching faces said, "I’m looking for Li Fei."
At the mention of "Li Fei," the four soldiers showed a fierce expression and reached out to grab him.
But the Guerrilla Dead by Wei Tianyang’s side would not just stand by and watch, they acted in an instant, subduing the soldiers.
"Wei, I hope you can understand," Du Yan said. "They don’t know you, and the losses they’ve suffered lately have been heavy, stuck at Six-faced God Mountain for so long..."
Wei Tianyang nodded; he could certainly understand. Since Li Fei established the New Liberation Front, she probably never mentioned him in the team, nor did she need to...
"Where is Li Fei?" he asked again.
The four people held in check now realized he was a superpower user and immediately got flustered, unsure whether to speak or not.
"Rest assured, Li Fei was trapped on He Mountain, and I rescued her," he said.
The four soldiers didn’t understand what he was talking about and remained vigilant, yet didn’t shout out loud.
However, the playground was too open, and the events in this corner were still seen by others. A large group of armed soldiers rushed over and surrounded Wei Tianyang thoroughly.
He scanned them and noted that the weapons in these soldiers’ hands were not the Type 90 rifles, but a new model equipped with drum magazines and a futuristic design.
"This equipment is no ordinary stuff. Li Fei’s backer is far more powerful than we thought. I just hope she doesn’t end up being a puppet on a string," Li Bin said, stroking his chin as he stepped up to the group of soldiers, closely examining their weapons.
"The situation has changed, Li Bin. We’ve got to win this battle first, and that’s more important than anything else!" Du Yan said, feeling helpless.
"Who are you?! Speak up!" A man wearing a military cap stepped out from among the soldiers surrounding Wei Tianyang. He appeared to be in his forties, with dark skin and a lanky frame.
"I’m here to help," Wei Tianyang said.
"How the hell am I supposed to believe you?!" the man demanded.
Wei Tianyang didn’t respond. He stood still, and the earth beneath him began to disintegrate and flow as if a giant cookie was being crumbled and crushed into powder. A mound of earth rose beneath his feet while the others instantly sank into the ground, with only their heads sticking out.
"If I hadn’t come to help, you’d be dead by now. You’d be buried 20 meters under the earth, silent and unmoving, with no one knowing where you’d gone," Wei Tianyang said, looking down at them with his blood-red eyes.
...
A moment later, in the principal’s office.
The man in the military cap was named Min Li, one of Li Fei’s six trusted aides. He had been a member of the Guerrilla Dead in his youth but only as a foot soldier, which was why Du Yan and Li Bin didn’t recognize him.
"It’s like this... the general went into the mountains with a small team, and then something happened... We want to rescue her, but..." Min Li said.
"We haven’t found her in the mountains, but this guy isn’t lying. Li Fei must be trapped somewhere else," Li Bin said.
Wei Tianyang looked at the map of Six-faced God Mountain on the table and said, "You go look in the mountains again. And if possible, send a group to Linjiang City to search. If Li Fei was captured alive, they might have taken her to Linjiang City where the conservatives would interrogate her."
"Huh?" Min Li was startled.
Wei Tianyang looked up and said, "I wasn’t talking to you."
Min Li glanced around the office corner; aside from two guards, there was no one else.
"Six-faced God Mountain is the gateway to Linjiang City. Normally, we could take a boat up the Linjiang to the city, but now even the river is blocked," Min Li explained.
"Can you only go over the mountains? How do you normally get there?" Wei Tianyang asked.
"Under normal circumstances, we’d go through a pass on the east side of the Loumian Mountain. There’s a bird’s path winding up the mountain. You could drive up, making it passable," Min Li said.
"Is that road now impassable? If there’s a road, it has to be better than forcing your way over the mountains, right?" Wei Tianyang said.
Min Li shook his head and said, "Tun Yun destroyed the road, and they’ve placed cannons on the mountain. Unless we take down Loumian Mountain, we’re under constant fire. The general planned to take a team to blow up the cannon, but she never returned..."
Wei Tianyang understood; the entire mountain had been transformed by the conservatives into a fort, relentless in its bombardment of any approach by water or detour.
Li Fei might have been pushed to the brink, resorting to a suicide squad’s tactics.
This was going to be tricky.
Wei Tianyang had the power to control the earth and his range was substantial, but in essence, he was still just a mortal. Facing the regular army of Chicken Snake Country, it wasn’t that he was afraid to confront them head-on; rather, he had to figure out the odds of success first.
