Chapter 450: Chapter 448: A Small Black Spot on the Sun

Cha Na hurried up to the third floor, barely rounding the staircase corner when a violent explosion erupted behind him, debris and shrapnel scattering like shots from a shotgun.

Half of the ceiling on the third level had collapsed, and torrential rain poured over him, the dense curtain of water pressing down like a quilt, bending the boy so he couldn’t straighten his back.

A beam of flashlight shone up from below, and on the square, a soldier still left on lookout caught Cha Na in the light before a volley of 7.62mm caliber bullets flew towards him.

Cha Na promptly threw himself to the ground, then, rolling to the side, he crawled deeper into the floor.

Bullets shattered other parts of the ruins, cascading down with the rainwater onto his back as the water streamed through the holes in the collapsed floor to the second level, forming a small waterfall.

The enemy also used AK47s, all procured from illegal arms dealers; they had no modern weapons, but there were plenty of old ones from the early 20th century.

After some thought, hearing footsteps behind him, he slid through the water like a little loach, slipped into the hole in the floor, and thudded onto a wooden plank, before rolling onto the floor below.

The fall stung, and he was too slow; the soldiers raced to the hole and threw down two grenades.

Cha Na quickly sprang over fallen tables and chairs and dashed through the doorway, only to slam into a black shadow head-on.

Struck in the face with the butt of a gun, his cheek throbbing in pain, Cha Na’s body tipped backwards, almost flipping a full circle in midair, before his back and the back of his head slammed hard against the floor.

Kicking away his AK, the man stomped viciously on Cha Na’s stomach. His tongue protruded from his mouth, his stomach churned turbulently, the sharp pain echoing inside his abdomen, his body curling up.

"Got him! It’s just a little fucking brat," the soldier yelled.

The grenades didn’t explode; Cha Na lay on the ground, realizing that it was just a trap, they must’ve only thrown stones.

The man stood on Cha Na’s head, with his rifle tucked under his arm, he bent down to grab the boy’s arm.

Cha Na pulled a small dagger from his chest, burst upward with a whoosh, and drove the knife into the man’s neck.

The soldier let out a cry, reflexively pulling the trigger, bullets striking the floor. In the pitch-black corridor, amidst the intermittent muzzle flashes, the two moved like a stop-motion animation, Cha Na holding onto the man’s neck while the sharp blade of the small dagger quickly slit his throat open; a large body was pressed underneath a small one, blade following blade, until motionless.

He crawled to the side and picked up his AK, only to be fiercely kicked in the back.

Cha Na lay on the ground, the gun knocked 2 meters away. He crawled half a meter forward as shots rang out behind him, bullets piercing his thigh, toppling him to the ground.

Numbness first, then a bee-sting-like pain followed, before the agony became clearer, spreading from his thigh to the rest of his body.

Unable to hold back, Cha Na cried out, rainwater sliding into his mouth; his whole left leg and hip felt like they were being torn off his body, half of him unable to move.

Three soldiers, still alive, jumped down through the hole and attacked him; he felt his arm being grabbed from behind, followed by a shadow flashing in front of him.

The flashlight beam hit his face, his eyes reflecting afterimages.

The man backhanded Cha Na across the face, his tooth coming loose, blood flowing from his lips.

"Malia Clan’s little fucker—damn it, he killed three of our brothers!" the soldier exclaimed.

"You all deserve to die!" Cha Na shouted back.

"Take him, give him a good ’education.’ This kid might know something," another soldier said.

The butt of a gun met with his cheek, and after three strikes, he fell into darkness.

Cha Na was taken back to their makeshift military camp, where he endured two days of brutal torture.

The Corey Clan’s soldiers didn’t go easy on him just because he was a child.

His arms, dislocated, were tied backward over a rusted iron frame, one side of his face swollen, half his teeth pulled out, and one eyeball gouged out.

His chest and abdomen were covered in bruises and knife wounds, urine and feces stuck to the insides of his thighs, his back flayed open by a willow whip, his waist pierced by several through-and-through holes from red-hot iron wires.

His legs were broken, the tendons in his hands and feet picked out, leaving him no different from a disabled person.

Cha Na had waited for death’s arrival, but he hadn’t expected them to kill him so quickly.

Eternity endured the cruel torture in place of Cha Na, asking him to close his eyes and not pay attention to the outside world.

"Is it over?" Cha Na asked.

"Not yet... If it were over, I would tell you..." Eternity was somewhat weak.

"Will someone come to save us?" Cha Na asked.

"This place has already been occupied... to save us, more of our people would die..." Eternity said.

"Alright... let’s... go find mom and dad together..." Cha Na said.

"Cha Na..." Eternity called.

"What?" Cha Na said.

"You’ll have to... go alone..." Eternity said.

"Brother..." Tears streamed down Cha Na’s face.

"I can only make it this far... I’m sorry, little brother... from now on, you’ll have to endure on your own..." Eternity said.

"I won’t give in... just like you... Wei Tianyang doesn’t like cowards... right?" Cha Na said.

"..." Eternity didn’t reply.

"Brother..." Cha Na called again.

Eternity didn’t respond.

Cha Na felt the pain in his body and heart assault him simultaneously, his body seemingly lightened somewhat, as if it had lost the weight of a soul.

The pain throughout his body made him groan involuntarily; just then, a soldier with a full beard walked in and slapped him across the face.

They unbound him, then tied him to another iron cross.

With his arms bent behind his back, a horizontal iron bar passed under his armpits, his feet were tied together, secured to the vertical iron rod. They took him outside, where the scorching sun was unbearable, planting him into the ground to bake under the blistering sun.

After doing this, they left, leaving Cha Na to be roasted by the sweltering sun, the blood on his body turning into rows and patches of dry crust.

Another two days passed.

Cha Na silently awaited death, reminiscing about past times during these two days. Sometimes, he would fall asleep and wander second-hand markets with his parents in his dreams, or watch comics with classmates at school. Then he would wake up and return to this sorrowful reality once more.

On the morning of the third day, he felt he was about to die, this feeling was so clear because he saw his dad and mom watching him from the ground.

They looked at him with heartache but could do nothing; Cha Na opened his cracked lips, unable to utter a sound.

The searing sunlight scorched his mutilated body, and he opened his eyes for the last time, looking toward the dazzling sun.

Within that golden light, on that small golden fireball, he saw a tiny black dot.

The black dot grew larger and finally, a human figure emerged.

Thinking he was probably dying, he closed his eyes, silently waiting for death.

At that moment, he heard the soldiers below shouting.

"There’s a person flying in the sky!"
