Chapter 448: Chapter 446: The Unnoticed War
Cha Na shifted his body among the ruins, scurrying to the edge of a broken wall, peering over; the grey barrel of a tank was slowly extending from behind a collapsed apartment building.
He gripped his rifle tightly, watching every move of the tank.
The diesel engine rumbled loudly as the tank moved onto the main road, rolling over the wreckage of a civilian sedan, half-concealing itself behind the ruins of buildings, slowly turning its cannon towards the three-story mall in the distance.
Cha Na breathed heavily, glancing around, trying to figure out a way to stop the tank from firing.
In the ruins of the three-story mall a hundred meters away, there lay guerrilla fighters who had just retreated from the west, and his uncle who had taken care of him for over four years was also there.
The barrel of the tank rotated 180 degrees and then slowly rose, finally settling at a delicate angle.
Cha Na was frantic.
He wanted to leap out from the ruins, but he had no weapon in hand that could harm the tank.
"Draw its attention, we can manage that," said Eternity.
"We’ll be discovered," Cha Na replied.
"We have to choose one," Eternity stated.
Suddenly, Cha Na steadied himself, resting his gun barrel on the broken wall, his young finger on the trigger.
He clenched his teeth, ready to pull the trigger.
Just then, a hand suddenly pressed down on his gun barrel.
Cha Na startled.
Three people crouched beside him, wearing thick coats and red scarves over their faces, with blue felt hats on their heads.
The leader pulled down his scarf, revealing a rough beard.
"Nick brother!" Cha Na exclaimed with relief.
Big-bearded Nick looked older than he was; he was actually only 22 years old. The beard was just to make himself look more imposing.
"Keep it down; you’ll wake up the iron coffin," Nick said with a smile.
"They’re going to blow up the mall," Cha Na stated.
"I know," Nick replied.
He looked at the tank, then at the two companions beside him, and asked, "Any homemade mines left?"
The guy on the left shifted his one-shoulder bag to the front, flipped open the leather flap, and said, "One left."
"It has to be sure, I’ll go," Nick declared.
His comrade handed Nick the mine.
It was a homemade mine made by strapping three high-power mortar rounds side by side with a piece of non-slip rubber attached to the side and detonated using a manual pull ring. The method was crude: one had to carry the mine, sneak through the tank’s blind spots, run to the side of the tank, throw the mine onto it and quickly get away...
The non-slip rubber ensured that the mine wouldn’t easily slide off the slanted tank surface. Thus, although it couldn’t truly stick on, it was still called a "homemade mine."
"I’m small, I can go," Cha Na said.
"No, you can’t," Nick shook his head.
He leaned his rifle against the wall and wrapped his scarf around his face.
"You’re too young; you can’t die before me."
With that, Nick leaped out of the ruins, clutching the homemade mine, and charged towards the tank.
The two guerrillas quickly raised their rifles to provide cover fire; Cha Na also watched his surroundings nervously.
Because the enemy’s old-fashioned tank didn’t have all-around surveillance, Nick easily made it to the back of the tank.
He pulled the pin and threw the sticky bomb toward the slant of the tank.
The moment his arm stretched out, his hand suddenly broke off.
"Nick, brother!" cried Cha Na, his body trembling.
"Get down! Sniper!" his comrade whispered urgently.
Nick’s severed hand and sticky bomb landed on the ground, while the tank, at the same time, revved up power and moved back more than 20 meters.
Nick tried to pick up the sticky bomb with his left hand, but another bullet pierced his spine, causing him to collapse to the ground.
Cha Na saw him lying on his side, eyes locked onto him, and couldn’t help but feel tears welling up.
In the next second, the sticky bomb exploded, creating a crater on the spot, with a puff of black dust flying into the air, mixed with a barely noticeable shade of blood red.
Nick’s body tumbled three times in the air half a meter off the ground, then fell with a thud, his head and upper body completely blown away, leaving only his lower abdomen dragging a long string of intestines and a pair of legs.
"Nick... Nick!!" Cha Na cried out.
But the guerrilla beside him pinned him behind a wall and said, "Avenge us."
"What?!" Cha Na was stunned.
At that moment, the tank’s main cannon fired nearby, and in the next second, Cha Na felt everything around him soar into the air, with sharp stones and debris lacerating his cheeks, the shockwave pierced through all covers, easily shattering all the barriers in front, and the two guerrillas tightly holding him, he heard someone yell out loudly, then there was no more movement.
The collapsing walls covered him completely as he closed his eyes, a severe headache preventing him from thinking, and the world fell into silence. Through a gap no larger than a thumb’s width, Cha Na could see outside as the tanks drove by, utterly silent,
He stared through this tiny window, gazing outside, until the tanks had left, until the sun had set, until it began to rain.
"Cha Na."
"Cha Na?"
Eternity called to him.
"Cha Na... it’s time to get up," said Eternity.
Cha Na curled up, unable to feel his hands and feet, his body numb with fear and quivering continually.
"Cha Na, get up, my brother, get up," Eternity persisted.
Cha Na tried to turn over, and a dirty black hand rested on his face.
He struggled to shake off the dust covering him and crawled out through the gap. The rain drenched the soil, the temperature dropped, and the once sheltering ruins had been leveled to the ground.
He knelt, looking back only to see two dismembered guerrilla corpses lying there, who had shielded him underneath them from most of the damage. The shell crater was 4 meters ahead of them, but the blast wave and rubble from the ruins still inflicted fatal wounds, one of the guerrillas’ half-face was blown away, and an iron rod from the mixed dirt impaled through his shoulder, protruding from his lower back.
He turned to look for Nick; the half-body was still in the distance, getting soaked in the rain, a small pool of black muddy water collecting in the large crater caused by the sticky bomb.
Cha Na’s eyes were dry from tears as he dug out his AK47 from the rubble and looked toward the direction of the shopping center.
He saw that the three-story shopping center had three more shell craters, half of the building had collapsed.
He ran to Nick’s body and searched around, finding a torn shoulder bag, from which he pulled out a small leather wallet.
He opened the wallet, and inside the compartment were a folded piece of paper and a silver ring.
"Cha Na, give it to Sister Radna," Eternity said.
"Sister Radna... in the shopping center... she might also be..." Cha Na trailed off.
"It doesn’t matter, Cha Na, this sentiment must be conveyed," said Eternity.
Cha Na nodded, put away the wallet, and reloaded his rifle.
Thunder rumbled across the sky; he looked up to see the dark clouds, with blue lightning occasionally streaking across the deep black sky.
He wiped away the rain streaking his face, hugged his rifle, and ran towards the distant shopping center.
