Chapter 432: Chapter 430 Changing Mind
The old man glanced at the business card and chuckled, "Young man, don’t try to pull one over on me. I’ve overplayed that hand in my time."
Chen Ke was taken aback and said, "You don’t seem like the others on the street, and you can speak Mandarin too. How did you end up here?"
The old man let out a self-deprecating yet boastful chuckle and replied, "I don’t mind telling you, back in Yin Country, I was a swindler. When times were good, I could make this much in a year." As he spoke, he held up three fingers.
"Three hundred thousand?" Chen Ke guessed.
The old man glared at him and shouted, "Three billion!"
Chen Ke burst out laughing. Either this old man was full of bullshit, or the world’s inflation had gotten so out of hand that money had lost all its value.
"Believe it or not, I won’t explain. In any case, if you want to know something, you’ve got to make it worth my while," the old man said.
"Name your price," Chen Ke replied with a smile.
"Three thousand Civilian Coins, and I’ll tell you," the old man replied with a grin.
Chen Ke pulled out his Glock pistol and said with a smile, "A bullet costs thirty coins; I’ll shoot you a hundred times, and throw in an extra twenty. How’s that?"
The old man was startled, not expecting the young man before him to suddenly produce a gun, and found himself unable to speak.
At that moment, the sound of children’s commotion came from behind.
Chen Ke turned around and saw seven or eight kids surrounding a boy, descending from a muddy slope. The boy carried a black canvas bag on his back, held a bottle of mineral water in his left hand, and a small bag of rice, about 2 kilograms, in his right hand.
"Uncle Li." The group of children passed by them, and the boy greeted the old man.
Chen Ke crossed his arms in front of himself and put the pistol away.
The old man stood there silently, not daring to utter a word. Chen Ke observed the boy and glared at the old man before following after them.
The boy looked to be in his teens, perhaps a middle school student, wearing a black short-sleeved shirt and dirty sweatpants, with black sneakers on his feet, limping as he walked.
Chen Ke watched, trying to confirm if he was Wei Tianyang.
The group of children followed the boy in front of a shanty, where curtains hung at the doorway. The boy called into the house, "Mom!"
A middle-aged woman lifted the curtain and stepped out. She was somewhat frail, her countenance worn, her long hair tied at the back of her head, a large patch of darkened needle marks visible on her forearms protruding from her sleeves.
"Yang, you’re home early today," the woman said with a smile.
"I sprained my ankle at noon, so I didn’t go to Sushi Delivery to work. Came back instead," the boy said.
"Take a vehicle if you’ve sprained your ankle," the woman suggested.
"It’s fine. I wouldn’t have been able to buy the rice if I took a vehicle," the boy replied.
At that moment, the surrounding children looked on eagerly at the bag of rice in his hand.
The boy, with hands on his hips, chuckled and said, "Go get your bowls!"
The children scattered laughing, and the boy squatted down, taking a bowl from his mother, carefully scooped half a bowl from the bag, then handed it back to her.
"We can have some porridge tonight. It’s too hot to eat much anyway," the boy said.
"Mm," the mother replied, taking the bowl and going back into the house.
Chen Ke stepped forward, standing in front of the boy.
The boy looked up at him, expressionless.
After a silent stare-down, the boy suddenly asked, "Who are you looking for?"
Chen Ke replied, "I’m looking for Wei Tianyang."
A surprised smile flickered across the boy’s face, which he quickly suppressed, and said, "That’s me!"
Chen Ke didn’t know why Wei Tianyang was grinning foolishly. He was ready; with just one shot right now... it would all be over.
"Why are you so happy?" Chen Ke couldn’t help but ask.
"You’re from Nuankang Property, right?! Are you here to tell me the result of my apartment garbage disposal job interview?!" Wei Tianyang said with a smile.
Chen Ke didn’t speak.
At this moment, the large group of children gathered again.
He turned around and saw the children each holding various types of bowls—there were porcelain ones, plastic lunch boxes, and some even held dirty plastic bags.
Chen Ke instinctively moved aside, only to see the children lining up orderly, then waiting for Wei Tianyang to distribute rice to them.
His small bag of rice was not much to begin with, he had only taken half a bowl for himself, and the rest he had given to these children.
Chen Ke looked around at the shanties and bungalow houses, noticing many elderly and disabled people peeking out from behind their doors, sitting at their doorsteps, watching Wei Tianyang.
Once the children got their rice, they ran back to their homes.
By then, Wei Tianyang’s rice bag was empty, he clapped his hands and cast an expectant gaze at Chen Ke.
"Ah... I... I..." Chen Ke struggled somewhat.
A single bullet could solve the problem.
But something was preventing him from doing so.
Wei Tianyang was right in front of him.
But instead of seeing a Divine King who would destroy the world, Chen Ke only saw a kindhearted person struggling to live.
He could solve the problem, but there were many ways to solve a problem.
At that moment, the mother pulled back the door curtain and peered outside. Though she didn’t speak, her gaze towards Wei Tianyang was also filled with expectation, her expression seemed to be asking about the outcome.
Chen Ke felt a bit at a loss and said, "I need to go back and verify some things..."
As soon as he spoke, the expressions on Wei Tianyang and his mother’s faces became somewhat despondent.
However, he still smiled and said, "Okay, I’ll wait for your news."
Chen Ke turned and walked out of the slum.
As night fell, he wandered the streets, pondering for a long time.
Eliminating Divine Power Tianyang didn’t necessarily mean killing Wei Tianyang...
He took out the document and examined it under the streetlight’s glow.
In 2105, Wei Tianyang became one of Tiantai Pharmaceutical’s Medicine People, injected with a trial version of Black Medicine derived from 091, then after sleeping for a year, he suddenly went berserk.
This was the starting point of everything.
And he became a Medicine Person simply because his living environment was too harsh, he and his mother both looked rather unhealthy.
Due to lack of money, they ate little, which led to their constant state of hunger and subhealth, the body weakened, to the point where Wei Tianyang couldn’t even get a job as a community cleaner and had to do temporary work all over.
This was a vicious cycle; he needed money, which was why he went to Tiantai Pharmaceutical to become a Medicine Person. The Black Medicine trials were inhumane and didn’t care whether the testers were healthy; the pharmaceutical company only needed data...
Perhaps, a job and a sum of money could eliminate Divine Power Tianyang, saving 999 worlds.
Giving Wei Tianyang a permanent job and providing him with some savings to help him leave the slum could prevent the tragedy from starting in the first place. At least, Chen Ke didn’t believe that the young man before him could ever turn into that form.
Of course, to be on the safe side, he would still do something violent...
Find the fallen 091 project within Chicken Snake Country’s territory, destroy it, then kill all the people of Tiantai Pharmaceutical...
He was an Assassin, not an executioner or a murderer; killing was a means, not the end, this problem didn’t have just one solution.
Chen Ke crumpled the document into a ball, the Anhelei’s ash in the palm of his hand ignited, burning the document to a black ash, then he disappeared into the night.
