Chapter 314: Chapter 312 Coffee and Goats
After leaving Leona, Wei Tianyang walked Baphomet around the streets, passing time in a roadside cafe.
He had to attend a banquet in the evening after all, and necessary political activities could not be skipped. Having received preferential treatment, he couldn’t just act childishly on a whim.
The cafe wasn’t large and looked quite worn down, with just a few plastic stools and small tables set up on the street corner. Inside the cafe, there were only an old person and a young person rapidly preparing lattes and dark roasts.
Wei Tianyang’s pet was too eye-catching; many people approached to ask if they could take photos and pet it.
"Don’t let them touch me." Baphomet, lying next to him taking a rest, sent a thought.
"Of course, you can, the tuft of fur on its butt is the softest. Those horns are pretty fun too," Wei Tianyang replied with a smile to a Prussian beauty who had come over to chat.
Baphomet, lacking a temper, just grumbled a bit as several Prussian beauties sat on his back, taking photos and stroking his fur.
Wei Tianyang drank his coffee and conversed with Baphomet telepathically.
"Tell me more about the Great Narrative. Since none of you have seen the end, why do you think there will be an end, and be so certain that the end will not have room for all the characters?" Wei Tianyang asked.
"The feeling is indescribable, much like how you residents have such short lifespans and are all too aware that death is inevitable."
"We do not have the concept of lifespan as you do, but in the framework of the Great Narrative, every Chapter and character within it has its own significance."
"When a character realizes they are meaningless in the future Chapters, they instinctively try to bestow themselves with meaning, so they can continue to exist in the Chapters to come," Baphomet answered.
"If that’s the case, why not do something meaningful? Why must there be fighting against each other?" Wei Tianyang didn’t understand.
"Because no resident knows what the Great Narrative entails, nor do they understand what is meaningful or meaningless. The most pragmatic approach is to reduce the number of characters; after all, the Great Narrative always needs characters to advance its Chapters," Baphomet answered.
Wei Tianyang put down his coffee cup and was at a loss for words.
Even the Heavenly Falling Objects, by nature, were predisposed to take action first.
"Why don’t you work together to find the true meaning of the Great Narrative? Explore its content, strive to secure your place at the end through cooperation rather than death matches? You believe the content of the Chapters changes because of the characters, yet you choose a path close to self-destruction," Wei Tianyang shared his thoughts.
"Your idea exudes the fragrance of an idiot, making me nauseous. But you’re the one who could shatter me, and yet you occupy the position of so many residents," Baphomet looked down upon him.
Wei Tianyang grew angry, his mind whirling with thoughts as he then sent across, "There are many people in this world just like you, who only destroy without creating, who claim possession and waste! Why must you make the world increasingly harder to live in?"
"The Great Narrative genuinely exists, and our reality depends on the Great Narrative. If this is what we are, then that is the main theme of the Great Narrative. We are but the smallest units composing it; we conform to it, become part of it. It must be the same for the place you live in, where people conform to the expected image of that place, and those you speak of as living a hard life are like the characters that disappear from the Great Narrative, unwanted. I don’t care about ’how it should be’; I’m concerned with ’how it is supposed to be’," Baphomet countered with sound logic.
"Both the Great Narrative and this world can be changed, there are people who want to make it better, I know. If there are enough such people, the world will change. It should never be just about ’how it is supposed to be.’ If we can’t even decide our own way of living, our own way of thinking, do we still have complete personalities? Why should others tell us ’how it is supposed to be’ instead of us deciding ’how we want it to be’?" Wei Tianyang said.
"Have you realized that when you think about ’how you want it to be,’ you’re actually praying for a voice to tell you ’how it is supposed to be’?" Baphomet added.
"No, that’s completely different," Wei Tianyang shook his head.
"It’s fundamentally the same," Baphomet too shook his head.
"It’s different!" Wei Tianyang got somewhat irritated, his crossed leg shaking rapidly in frustration.
"It’s the same. If I could break free from the control of the Great Narrative, I would not consider any matters of the Great Narrative, I would choose to leave, to go to some other place. Your logic is to be controlled within the Great Narrative, yet you think of changing it, hoping for a voice to promise you that change has happened and everything will go according to your wishes. That’s unrealistic," Baphomet shook his head.
"..." Wei Tianyang was suddenly speechless.
"In this place where you live, where residents control residents, it really is interesting—obviously the same species, no duels, no comparisons, yet willingly obeying each other’s words."
"I think this is the outcome of the thinking behavior you call ’how you want it to be.’ Always, what you want is for another entity to tell you what to do, how to do it. And moreover, you want them to promise that this is what you hope for, what you desire."
"Isn’t that stupid? You live in lies and take pride in it, thinking you possess free will, believing you can change something."
Baphomet blew a disdainful breath, sounding rather unpleasant, which made the beauties laugh heartily.
"Just like now, being ridden on my back by the residents here, they must think I’m willing, but where would they know, I’m cooperating only because of your coercion, afraid of being erased by you."
"So, the situation is not ’what I want,’ but you telling me, ’you will,’ understand?"
Baphomet added one last statement.
Wei Tianyang had nothing to say, feeling vaguely that Baphomet wasn’t right, but he hadn’t attended school for long and couldn’t argue against it.
He felt very annoyed, it was indeed a profound humiliation to lose an argument to a beast.
If Zhao Ling were here, she would definitely know how to convince the Black Mountain Goat.
Wei Tianyang sighed and shook his head repeatedly.
After the beauties had taken photographs with the goat, they also asked for a photo with him and his contact information, but he declined.
He grabbed the goat’s horns and wandered with Baphomet through the city streets and alleys.
He loved the feeling of walking, the feeling of moving amongst the crowd; it was the sense of life he sought.
He liked it this way.
Fuck ’what I want’ and ’what I’m supposed to do,’ blah blah blah... Fuck it all!
