I Am Extraordinary Alone
Chapter 236 - 234 Bi Quan Sanatorium

Chapter 236: Chapter 234 Bi Quan Sanatorium

The car had been driving through the woods for a while, and it was nearing 4 a.m.

Contrary to what Wei Tianyang had imagined, there was a well-maintained driveway in these woods; only the stretch of dirt road when entering the forest was a bit rough.

This shaded path wound its way deeper and deeper, and at the end of the road stood a three-story manor.

They parked the car outside the iron gate. The headlights illuminated the empty guard room at the gate.

Above the iron gate hung a sign with the words "Bi Quan Sanatorium" in English.

"Is she here?" Wei Tianyang asked.

Mondrian nodded and said, "The first batch of human experiment survivors were held in places like this by the government, back before the city was sealed off. Since then, disappearances started happening more frequently in the city. But because the victims were mostly loners and vagrants, nobody cared."

As Mondrian spoke, he pushed open the iron gate.

The gate creaked loudly, and looking at the darkened windows of the sanatorium, Wei Tianyang couldn’t shake the feeling that someone inside was secretly watching them. He knew there were people in the sanatorium; he could smell three distinct scents: the unique bitter moldy scent of the neutralizer, the rotting stench of corpses, and a woman’s body odor.

Wei Tianyang walked over by himself. Mondrian didn’t find this strange and followed silently behind, the two of them, one after the other, pushing open the double wooden doors of the sanatorium’s ground-floor lobby.

The putrid smell grew stronger, but this was only perceptible to Wei Tianyang. Mondrian could only detect a faint, barely noticeable stale scent in the air.

Candles were lit in the lobby. Mondrian informed him that after the city suffered a widespread outbreak of disappearances and the contagious language symptoms could no longer be concealed, the sanatorium was abandoned. The government had initially planned to burn it down, but for some reason, this plan had never been carried out.

Wei Tianyang and Mondrian crossed the empty lobby and went straight up to the second floor.

The corridor reminded him of the small hospitals in the Chicken Snake Country of Kongse, where the moonlight streamed through the windows onto the brown-green wall paint, and the concrete floor beneath their feet was somewhat uneven, with each room’s door reinforced with iron doors.

Wei Tianyang peered through the narrow rectangular windows in the doors and inside each room, he saw two beds and a chamber pot. There were people on a few beds, but most were empty.

"Are they all dead?" Wei Tianyang asked.

"Yeah, most of the first batch of experimentees died; a small number mutated and were locked here, left unattended and without supplies. Starved to death. There were soldiers guarding the door at that time; anyone who went in was trapped and starved, and anyone who tried to come out was shot," Mondrian explained.

Wei Tianyang felt a sinking in his heart.

The military is an instrument of state violence, and the state’s power also stems from this violence. Soldiers never care about right or wrong; they just execute the orders of the ruling class. This is why the Mud Man had repeatedly told him that soldiers must be loyal to their country and their mission.

Violence... it’s meant to be used against the enemy, isn’t it? What’s the point of right or wrong?

"You sound very familiar with all this," Wei Tianyang remarked.

"I... I stood guard here," Mondrian said with a chuckle.

"No... I mean... Zoe. You borrowed this body to bring me here to see all this. What for?" Wei Tianyang looked at the Mondrian before him, his eyes faintly glowing red.

Mondrian was startled for a moment, then smiled in resignation and replied, "When did you realize? Did you see through me the moment you came in?"

"No, my mind isn’t that quick... Even when you asked me to take off my headphones in the hospital, I didn’t realize," Wei Tianyang said.

"Oh... so it was in the car?" Mondrian asked.

"Yes... you talked a lot about me. As a retired soldier from Libitelli, Mondrian knew too much. You read a lot of people’s short-term memories, pieced together these messages, and then used his mouth to tell me, right?" Wei Tianyang said.

"You’re right, but I haven’t lied to you," Zoe spoke through Mondrian.

"Your abilities don’t quite match what’s in the file," Wei Tianyang said.

"My abilities, while here, have expanded and underwent some minor changes. Before, I could only listen, now, I can speak," Zoe explained.

"So the language virus—was it your doing?" Wei Tianyang asked.

"The virus spreading through language is an utter falsehood. That much is true. The Libitelli political dynasty and Hasegawa Pharmaceutical are researching a new project. If it succeeds, the Superpower Special Forces will become obsolete," Zoe said.

Wei Tianyang looked at Mondrian, his brow furrowed.

"The project is codenamed ’Witch.’ To obtain more data as fast as possible, Hasegawa Pharmaceutical proposed using a city for experiments," Zoe continued.

"Is this a branch of the Heavenly Falling Objects research?" Wei Tianyang inquired.

"No, it’s not. This project isn’t related to the Heavenly Falling Objects," Zoe shook her head.

"It’s impossible; human superpowers come from the Heavenly Falling Objects..." Wei Tianyang said, struggling to convince even himself.

"That’s why I tell you, once the Witch project succeeds, the Superpower Special Forces will be history," Zoe said.

"What about the soldiers sent here?" Wei Tianyang asked.

"They are used for testing and elimination of uncontrollable subjects. The fallen soldiers have been disposed of in secret, and the survivors went to a hidden base, currently providing protection for the researchers at Hasegawa Pharmaceutical," Zoe said.

"Why did they send you here?" Wei Tianyang inquired.

"To pry open a woman’s mouth," Zoe replied.

"Who?!" Wei Tianyang pressed.

"Hasegawa Chiharu. The eldest daughter of the President of Hasegawa Pharmaceutical... and also the company’s chief scientist," Zoe said.

"That doesn’t make sense... Why?" Wei Tianyang was puzzled.

"She couldn’t accept the experimental methods of the Witch project, nor could she face... that girl... so she decided to stop the project, which was unacceptable... But they couldn’t kill her; without her, the Witch project doesn’t exist. Thus, the Fogen Government sent me in, just to extract the technical details from her mind," Zoe explained.

Wei Tianyang sighed and paced the corridor, reaching the window and gazing at the half-open iron gate; he finally understood the true intent of the mission...

The Fogen Government and Richu Country, to gain a military advantage, were researching the Witch project, aiming to replace the traditional Superpower Special Forces...

Several experiments by Hasegawa Pharmaceutical meant the surviving Medicine People were confined to die in a sanatorium hidden in these woods.

To swiftly gather a significant amount of data, the Fogen Government and Hasegawa Pharmaceutical experimented on the entire city’s population, contaminating the water supply and locking down the city.

Citizens infected in the city showed mutations; the army moved in, tested their strength, and executed them...

Chief Scientist Hasegawa Chiharu could not bear such methods and decided to halt the project. Consequently, Fogen sent Zoe in to read minds...

Zoe... after entering this place and learning the truth... experienced a change in abilities for reasons unknown and turned the government’s lies into reality...

"Zoe, you’re not lying to me, are you?" Wei Tianyang asked again.

Zoe smiled and replied, "I’ve seen your memories, you’re different from the other soldiers. I choose to trust you, so I won’t lie to you."

"When you leave his body, what will happen to him?" Wei Tianyang asked further.

"He’ll get a good sleep, and when he wakes up, he will have lost all memory of this period. That’s all," Zoe said.

"Alright... I’ll trust you for now. Take me to Hasegawa Chiharu," Wei Tianyang said.
